March 2019 update: Was back in Indio and had to give the Tropics Motor Hotel another chance. They have repainted the exterior in multiple colors to emphasize the Tiki elements, and it works. Much more importantly, the customer service has improved considerably. Our interactions this time were friendly and professional. The room we stayed in has some modest updates. The bare-bones essence of the place is still evident but for us that's not necessarily a bad thing. Fond memories have returned and we'll be back. read more

*****BEWARE****** unless you can park in the hotel lot don't bother staying in this dump. My car and others broken into!!!!!! Manager/owner tells you there is space for one car only and to park on the gravel space next door and he's not responsible for property damage. Should've realized then something was up. My car was vandalized to the point I can't get home to LA, and by the broken glass strewn around other cars were broken into as well. This place is just not worth it. Stay elsewhere. read more

I came here for a concert in the desert and this was one of the locations that was open and not crazy expensive. The place was clean, even though it was old. The staff was very very friendly which is awesome. They gave a fridge for the room, which was a great spot to keep the beers and alcohol cold (who needs food). They regulate people in the parking lot after hours who get loud at the pool or where ever. I would go back here again, for the price its really good. Only complaint is the bath room needs updating, and the bath window only opens a little, but there are bars on it, to keep out the bad people. read more

A very underrated hotel. Front staff is pleasant and friendly. Rooms are clean and the beds are sooooo! Comfortable. What makes this hotel stand out from the others on this strip of Indio boulevard is that there are no shady people coming on to the property. As a former Law Enforcement it alleviates nervousness because I work all day and I leave my Son by himself. During this transitional time in our life's I am an extended stay guest and I love the safety, cleanliness and security of this location. Please...please...skip motel 6 don't do that to your family. By the way..I don't know what's up with that gnarly foot pic. That's motel 6 crap. The housekeeping staff here is so diligent and always checking every day to make sure you are stocked of fresh towels or toiletries. read more

I stayed at this specific location last night and I honestly say I didnt have any issues at all. Not only were there no issues but I was very pleasantly surprised by several things. First off my visit was not pleasure or vacation, my partner is in the hospital here and there is a lot of stress and a lot of things going on so it would not take to much negative to make this review negative! Here are a couple things I was happily suprised with... First, I alone messed up my reservation before coming to the hotel. In no way did they have to work with me, lock my price, much less give me a better room! Real customer service such as working with and greeting your customers now days seems a lost art even if you work at a hallmark store. They fixed my reservation quickly, asked if there was anything I needed and wished me a good evening. Second, the room! As soon as I walked in the room I had the thought they had givin me the wrong key. For the surprisingly affordable and below average price I paid the room it was huge as you can clearly see in all the posted pictures. I get anxiety in little box shaped spaces and this one did not in any way bother me. I loved having such a large vanity by the sink. I hate when the counter space is so small you almost have to choose what gets a place for the night, tooth brush or comb. This was more then enough for everything including my vanity case with room to spare! It was a very clean, tastefully decorated, and pleasantly smelling room. I can see why they are proud of them. Third, my evening was stressful givin the situation of dealing with family and the hospital but that aside the time at the hotel I am very lucky was not. It was a Saturday night and we all know some establishments get a reputation of being that janky place where the kids go to party right? This is not one of them. I was not bothered or disturbed one time and the location is central enough you can order delivery from about anywhere. Finally, if you are going to be traveling into the Indio area at all I would highly recommend a stay at this hotel! Save yourself some money while still staying in a nice quality, customer service environment which ultimately saves you something else.... stress! If you have an experience like mine I highly encourage you to share as we need to be supportive of the smaller businesses that still maintain that "customers always right" mentality. I am in fact going to go back and see what they have available again tonight as I just found out I am needed another day. Thanks for reading. read more

Quite possibly the worst hotel experience in my entire life. My friends and I booked our room for the weekend of Stagecoach back in January through Expedia, using the reserve now pay at check in function. After reserving, I received a call that we just pay for our room now or it would be released. Okay? Frustrating but oh well. We paid for our room. Upon check in we were rudely greeted in the motel office, told of the RULES of the property. Including only ONE car allowed per room, which is just ridiculous. We were charged an additional 95$ for our third guest who wasn't on the reservation. Again, frustrating but whatever. The worst part of this, beyond all else, was how we were treated during our stay. There was a 'security guard' constantly walking around making sure everyone was staying in their rooms with their doors CLOSED. Yes, we were not allowed to hang out outside of our rooms, we were not allowed to leave our doors open, go from room to room, or have visitors. Is this a motel or a high security lockdown? Everyone staying there paid a LOT of money and I think we deserved to be treated a bit better. The manager harassed is the entire weekend, to the point where we left as early as we could every morning to avoid being yelled at. I wouldn't recommend this motel to my worst enemy. It is seriously horrific and the most unenjoyable experience I've ever had in the hospitality industry. Stay far away. read more

Everyones at the beach, so we came to the desert; what a find; If you're on a budget; this is your place!; it's a great value. Our room is very clean, smells delightful & did I mention a great price! (Two days for less that $130 bucks!) All furniture is in good shape & def not shabby. Welcoming check in as well; very nice people here. We almost booked the $400 room at one of the resorts; glad we didn't; more shoppingSeriously, you won't go wrong with this choice! Prices do go up about 150% to 200% in the fall months. read more

This is NOT a Hotel. Its a Motel. When you first walk in to the "Lobby" it smells like curry and dirty feet. The security is really great here. Except its not to keep people safe its to watch the guests and overcharge for visitors. The guy who cleans the rooms looks like he just got out of Prison that week. The shower head is very low. Water was pointing at my chest. You have to bend over to wet your head. The Air Conditioner is very old. read more

I'm giving five stars, because for what this place is it does better than I expected! It's an old school motor inn motel. It gives a very clean room at a very good price. We were just looking for a place to sleep for the night when going up to see a show. All we wanted was a clean room at a low price. Also, we just kind of wanted to stay in an old school motel! We could afford a fancy resort, but this was part of the fun of our show and trip! This was even better than we expected! To top it off, Frank who was working the front desk when we checked in was very friendly, helpful and fun to talk to. These types of classic motor inns are diapering from the American landscape. This one had all the charm of the 50's, 60's era, and was very well maintained. No, it's not the Four Seasons, but you should know that going in. Would we stay here again when going to a show in Palm Desert....Hell Ya!! read more

Terrific service. I stayed here for Coachella 2015 and Sue and Mukesh (the couple that manages the place) were very helpful. All the way from late-checkins, safe-keeping of possessions, 24x7 on call service....you name it. The room was pretty comfy and clean. Our friend left his phone behind at the hotel. Mukesh and Sue were very helpful in getting it sent back to us. I highly recommend this place, just for the customer service. read more

We like our stay. Inexpensive and perfect for the route to Sedona from Orange County. will stay again for the same reason.

Avoid avoid avoid!!!! Our negative experience compounded by a number of different issues. The promise wifi yet the wifi clearly only reaches a few rooms from the router clearly located in the office. Room was not prepared properly as the bathroom floor was at. I slid on the floor and hit my arm on the side of the toilet. Air con for this room anyway, doesn't work. It is extremely loud and turns off after 5 minutes. As this list goes on it seems Ridiculous that we could encounter so many seperate problems almost unrealistic. But this is our experience and that is what has encouraged me to write something on this page. The TV sounds like it is going to explode every time you change the channel and every time it says no signal so you have to wait for the channel to come. Also got water ran out this morning halfway through my husbands shower. But the worst part of this and it is utterly disgusting and almost incomprehensible is when we went to make the complaint we clearly got through to the owner or one of, who listened intently to our complaint then flippantly quipped anything else? Before launching into a crescendo slating is for having the apparent audacity to even consider calling up to complain about "my baby and his special remodelled rooms" he said "I am not taking your complaint" before hanging up. The level of ignorance and arrogance was absolutely disgusting. Like I said avoid avoid avoid!!!! read more

Safe, comfortable, well priced and well managed older hotel. Old hotel and old furnishings but well maintained, clean and comfortable. Appears to be family owned and managed and they clearly take care of the place despite its age. Reasonably priced. Best hotel that I've stayed at in the area for the price. I'd stay there again. WiFi available for free, friendly staff. read more

Safest, cleanest locally owned motel in the area. Skip Motel 6 and stay here instead.

I had to cancel my reservation and mangers worked with me. My reservation was non refundable but they understood. Thank you, Sherrie Sullivan read more

This is more of like a motel than a hotel. The maids did a good job at displaying the rooms, EXCEPT for the carpet and shower room. The carpets are really really really dirty, that after walking on the carpet and then onto the tiles, your feet turns black and also your feet imprints the dirt onto the tiles. The carpets are so dirty that even the previous guests left their foot dirty foot prints onto the floor of the showers. The sliding doors for the showers are broken and you have to shove the sliding windows hard to close them. I talked to one of the employees (I forgot to ask if he was the owner) about the dirty carpet and he was rude. I asked if he could accommodate for the dirty carpet and he said to "not go there" as in no, he will not refund or accommodate anything for the dirty carpet and started arguing that there's nothing dirty about the place when I politely mentioned that the carpets are dirty and staining our feet. read more

Worst hotel ever! You pay for a room yet they regulate people coming in, always being questioned. No one is helpful. The guy in the front is super rude. He acts like we are staying here for free. For about $300 a night I would expect better service. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

The worst experience I've ever had at a Hotel. They'll only give you new sheets if your stay is longer than 5 days. Wouldn't give us an extra towel. They told me that if I don't clean the room before leaving, there will be an extra charge. We had friends staying in a room three doors down, but were told that visitors weren't' allowed, and that if we wanted to "hang out" with them, than we had to go to the pool area. This place is absolutely ridiculous and I'm curious on how anyone could rate this more than one star. read more

The worst motor hotel experience of my life. For each visitor that was visiting me they charged 20$ each, even if they were just there for 20 min. And they wouldn't give us more than one roll of toilet paper at a time. Which you wouldn't think it was a big deal until someone in our room gets sick and your run through it quickly. The front desk people were rude and I will never be returning and hopefully I can prevent anyone else from having this horrible experience like i did. If I could give it no stars I would.. read more

It was our 1st time not having a RV at Stagecoach this year due to all the new rules. We chose these hotel/motel without any expectation... Surprisingly ... a great experience. Like us, others were there for the same reason. The place is old and run down but the atmosphere was pleasant. To compensate the fun of walking around the RV's and meeting new people, this year we had their quiet little pool. It was kind of nice considering a 117 degree weather. We might just go back to it next year. read more

I wish I could give this 3.5 stars simply because I thought it slightly better than "A-OK" but just below "Yay! I'm a fan" Overall, here is what you want to know when staying at a hotel: - Was it clean? Yes. The room was clean-- it had been vacuumed, the bed was made, the towels were hanging nicely, no dust on top of the furniture, the bathroom floor was clean, toilet was clean, shower was clean. Everything about the room was clean. Nothing made me feel like I shouldn't rest my head on the bed, or shower in their shower.... nothing more than the usual personal uneasiness I feel when staying anywhere that is not home. That being said, it's a very affordable place and you get what you pay for. It's not luxurious. You get some soap, a foil packet of shampoo and conditioner, and .. well that's it. Ultimately, if you are looking for a nice, clean (and affordable) place to spend the night. I would recommend it. - How was the staff? Very friendly. Absolutely no complaints. - How was the environment/surrounding area? The hotel is located near a railroad track and so every once in a while you'll hear the roar of a train passing by. I can say that the night I stayed there I heard it once the evening before going to bed, and then once again mid-morning. It was nothing unbearable. The area surrounding the hotel was nice. Nothing spectacular and near to the Fantasy Spring Casino. I'm not to familiar with Indio, CA as this was my first visit. So I can't tell whether the surrounding area (kind of boring, kind of depressing) is commonplace. At the end of the day, I ask myself whether I would stay there again and the answer is yes. Oh, and the hotel has a very small pool. I only saw it when I was parking... I wouldn't get into the pool, but that's more with the location of the pool (basically in the parking lot), as opposed to any other reason. read more

This is a very nice Hotel for the price. I regularly stay in older hotel/motels when I travel. by myself. Basically, all I am looking for is a comfortable bed with clean sheets, no bugs, relatively clean and a shower. I don't care if the place is modern or has amenities like a pool or a continental breakfast. Coffee in the room is nice and so is a refrigerator but neither is Required.. I was very pleasantly surprised at the Tropic Motor Hotel. It was clearly built in the 50s, on the old highway before the Interstate. I found the staff very friendly and the room rate low. I didn't have high expectations for the room. My expectations were far exceeded. The room was "Squeeky Clean", the bed was very comfortable and the shower was great! There was a coffee maker and refrigerator in the room. There was an older TV but it worked fine. There was even a nice pool though I didn't use it. The room rate was about $50. I'll stay there again even if my wife is traveling with me. Roger read more

I got a recommendation from my friend Paul Bass to stay at this hotel during Stagecoach 2019. When we arrived we met the owner Mukesh Patel, what an awesome guy. This place is a hidden gem off of Indio Blvd, rooms are clean and up to date and very quiet what a great place to stay. read more

For the price ($70 for a queen bed room), Tropics doesn't quite measure up. The walls, doors, and windows frequently make noise, the bed isn't fixed to the floor, the free WiFi is atrociously spotty, and you can hear every passing train from your room. On the other hand, the showers are solid and there's AC. read more

I visited family and stayed at this Hotel. The place was clean, even though it was old. The staff was very very friendly which is awesome and were able to supply us with an iron and blow dryer. Although the blow dryer sounded like a power drill, eh. not a big deal. They gave a fridge and microwave for the room which was great because other places charge extra for the appliances. They gave us free WIFI, we all love that of course. The only HORRIBLE thing I would say was the train is right in front of the Hotel and would wake my boyfriend all night. Not too happy about that since we stayed for two nights. It sounded like a freaken earthquake and it would pass by pretty frequently. read more

I stayed here last weekend in room 201 the room was really clean and simple has a mini fridge with a microwave which is aswesome motel six doesn't offer that you had to pay 25 cent for ice but what can you expect when towel heads own it. He went running to get the problem fixed. The people at the front desk now there a different story they didn't offer any type of refund for this or nothing. I am currently staying here as I type this and it is terrible. I am a housekeeper at a spa and resort and the cleanliness if this room gets a rate of negative 3. First thing I noticed was roaches...next thing is i wrote my name in the dust on the furniture. Third thing is dead flies in the bathroom floor. Fourth thing it looks like somebody hurled on the curtain. I will never stay here again. Please visit my place. For the same rates you get way better quality.
