You can't really go wrong with banana bread and peanut butter and fancy looking lattes…read more This cute cafe reminded me of LA hipster cafes that are there purely for Instagram, but that's okay! They're known for their vegan banana bread and had the option of topping it with peanut butter or a greek yogurt topping. I loved that the bread was toasted, and it was so comforting and sweet to eat with a spoon. The peanut butter isn't the disgusting Skippy consistency, but more like natural, dripping peanut butter that has a stronger flavor. It was a nice bite. I got the blue majik latte and thought it just tasted like a sweet latte that looked pretty. Kind of pricey too.

So updated review after eating brunch here today (4 Feb) with a friend:…read more Yes the pink background and palm frond wallpaper (and palm from baskets hanging from the ceiling) is still cute as ever and the desserts were again lovely. The waitress was also very cheerful this Sunday AM. The food menu is slightly changed from when I swung by six months ago. I got the Palm Buddha Bowel, which has an incredibly tasty blend of tabbouleh, roasted veggies, beetroot hummus, baba ganoush, massaged kale with seeds, pickled candy radishes (absolutely delicious) and thick sweet potato falafels bursting with flavour (the waitress kindly had the cucumber removed from the dish as I requested). It's a hefty bowl and I finished it feeling satisfied; I ended up being full the whole afternoon! I also got the Green Goddess juice (sans cucumber) and I liked how large and frothy it was. Sadly my friend didn't seem to like her Persian porridge and admittingly it looked pretty gluey and unpleasant. I got one of the vegan cookies and a coconut, chocolate and passion fruit macaroon for takeaway. The cookie was both sweet and salty but a bit too sugary for my taste. It was thin and lightly crispy with a decent amount of chocolate chunks. The macaron was very light and crumbly with a smattering of that coco/chocolate/passion fruit ingredient inside.

I would caveat my review by saying that mine was an atypical introduction to this little place, but I think everyone's is. Lumiere is intriguing enough from the street -- a roped in area around the door stuffed with plants and lights, and inside even more so. A tiny ground floor has a small bar where "jolly hour" lasts from 6-9pm and includes a £5 special cocktail and 3-for-£10 on beers. Downstairs lies a dirt-floored basement with off-shoots of rooms and another (even smaller) bar. A slightly raised up box is a stage I'm told, though no one was playing this particular night. An outdoor, small, tiled room with no roof allows smokers to get their fix without going out the front. Blinking party lights decorate throughout and a general tiki theme is sort of pulled off. It kind of feels like you're at that one amazing house party those one guys throw every year -- and this is the last year it's cool, before it gets too crowded and those obnoxious sorority girls start showing up and killing the chilled vibe. The cocktails are very well made with lovely, fresh juice and fruit. Speaking of, I'm not sure why this is referred to as a juice bar everywhere online - perhaps it's a cover... the intrigue deepens... I took some photos but have decided not to post them. It doesn't really do them justice, and some things just have to be experienced to understand.

They don't do much food (cakes mainly I think) but their soft drinks are great - I had a Rhubarb and Custard smoothie. They also do film showings downstairs in their labyrinthine basement.

I was probably a bit harsh and the restaurant can't really help who comes in. The staff are pretty nice in here, but the food is nothing to write home about. The real problem is the clientele. Imagine every stereotype you hold in your head about North London mummies: this is where the worst of what you're imagining bring their tiny terrors for lunch. I say this as a North London mummy with two tiny terrors of my own.

Its a great place to go for brunch on the weekend, if you can get a table that is. The conservatory in the back is a very soothing area to eat in, with crawling vines on the glass. This is to be avoided in very sunny weather though, as the sun turns the back into something of a steamhouse. In the evening, it becomes a more intimate and jazzy dimly lit restaurant with candles flickering on the tables. The food is very good, with a range of dishes that offer something for everyone. I had a salmon salad, which was delightful in its simplicity with lettuce, parmesan shavings, avocado and olives. The service was friendly and quick as well. I'll be back soon enough.
