Mountain casual fine dining does not get better than this! Park City has nothing with which to compare, nor Aspen, Vail, Telluride, Steamboat Springs, or Jackson Hole, for that matter. The key is proximity to San Francisco and food purveyors in the Pacific Northwest who supply Chef John W. and crew with bounty from farm, field, forest, ranch, and sea from which exquisite dishes are created in tune to the seasons. An in-house pastry team prepare deserts, breads, and truly spectacular cheese plates that showcase rare, artisan cheese with pickled vegetables, savory sauces, and salty bites perfectly presented on large white rectangular serving dishes. If you arrive here at 5pm, you can order half priced wine by the glass to accompany a cheese plate, then start your dinner proper by asking them to decant a wine ($30 corkage on 750ml bottles) and choosing either a la carte options or just going with the fixed tasting menu. Small extras along the way add up to a very rich and elaborate range of tastes, textures, and culinary styles, similar to a meal at Manresa or Gary Danko. The staff here are extremely outgoing and friendly, fully in line with the laid back but elegant Truckee vibe, which is a welcome contrast to more pretentious big city eateries where you can at times feel looked down upon. Not so here! A family atmosphere prevails, and the food, while top quality, also seems comforting and familiar, like the wild mushrooms you picked as a child with your uncle, the rich seafood or chicken broth soups your mother made when you were feeling sick or blue, or the chewy, gooey oatmeal cookies you made with your little brother over the winter holidays. I especially loved the use of local ingredients and soft, sensual textures to many dishes that were fragrant and mouth-filling without heaviness or excess. There were no culinary tricks employed to enhance the ingredients or intense spices used to mask the natural flavors. The cooking techniques brought out the inherent qualities of the foods assembled on the plate, without flashiness or showboating. The chef's touch was light and precise; he let the food shine. Fresh single origin coffee from Temple Roasters in Sacramento is also an added bonus at the end of your meal, which easily might last more than two hours. And the desert courses are superb! My friend was turning 60 and has had Trokay on her radar for this milestone birthday ever since we experienced them at Yelpstronomy last fall. In addition to their regular menu, Trokay offers a Prix Fixe menu (4 couses $105) as well as a Chef's Tasting Menu (10 courses $210). I was interested in the 4 course simply because my budget doesn't allow me to spend $210++ for one meal, however, when ordering either the Prix Fixe or Chef's Tasting, everyone at the table has to do the same thing. She had her heart set on the Chef's Tasting Menu and I was grateful that another friend was willing to pick up the difference which allowed me to particiapte in this AMAZING meal. If you like to try different things and if chemistry is your thing, this is a "must-have" meal. We arrived for our 5:30 reservation about 10 minutes early and were seated immediately. We were the only party there that early so we had our choice of where to sit. The birthday girl wanted a booth so she could snuggle with her honey and my friend and I were able to sit in regular chairs which suited us nicely. Our waiter, Jerrod, greeted us and explained what to expect for the evening. The guest of honor has some food allergies which she notified them of in advance. Jerrod explained that they had prepared special items where necessary to accommodate her needs. He was well informed which I was impressed by. At no time did he seem bothered by the special requests. He was a fantastic server! All of the courses were small but delicious. At first I thought we were going to have to go have dinner someplace else afterwards but we left feeling comfortably full. We started out with biscuits, bread sticks, and a pastry. Accompanied by two different jams. This was followed by a sphere of deliciousness (Amuse Bouche). Next came the Snow and Ice (frozen then microplaned foie gras, sea urchin cream, caviar, and microplaned green apple). The foie gras looked like panko bread crumbs but as soon as it hit your mouth, it had the amazing smooth and creamy texture you would expect from foie gras. The second course was called Fire and Smoke. It was covered when delivered to the table and we could smell the juniper smoking as soon as it left the kitchen to make it's way to us. It was pureed white asparagus topped with microplaned smoked trout farmed at nearby Mt. Lassen and smoked trout roe with carmelized black garlic and crisp agrete. Jerrod brought us a trio of bread with butter. The favorite at the table appeared to be the potato focaccia. It was toasty and perfect. The third course was the Walk in the Woods. The forest floor was a brioche soil atop a wax bean succotash, topped with fresh wild herbs and an earthy black truffle vinaigrette and calendula flowers. Course #4 was a Taste of the Sea. Something was broken in the kitchen so instead of the rock crab we were given a tempura soft shell crab over a red coconut curry sauce, a slice of compressed coconut and home made ramen noodles garnished with sea beans. The fifth course was a tortellini filled with Berkshire pork soup and topped with a beautiful little garlic flower. It was served on a large spoon and the temperature of the soup was perfect. Course #6 was a perfectly cooked squab (pigeon breast) and a slow cooked squab leg confit with a horseradish and potato croquet served over a citrus sauce. It was accomapnied by nasturtium and brassica (a broccoli variation). The seventh course was Tournedo Rossino. A Certified Angus Beef Tenderloin Filet topped with seared foie gras. Sauce was a pairing of black truffles, ramp chimichurri and a ramp bearnaise sauce as well as grilled and pickled ramp and some yarro. The seared foie gras was definitely the standout for me. I loved the creamy texture and smooth flavor. I took the tiniest bites possible just so I could savor it as long as possible. The 8th course came out smoking. It was topped with smoldering fig leaves which, when removed, revealed Mission Fig slices and the most amazing Sophia goat cheese wrapped in a brined fig leaf with a tiny bit of honey balsamic on the side. Jerrod called this a crossover dish because it featured both sweet and savory elements. The Ninth course consisted of 3 small bites of sponge cake, red currants three ways (fresh, pressed with sugar, and fermented) White Fir sorbet, black currant gelee and some frozen then microplaned wine. The white fir sorbet had a slightly sweet but earthy flavor. The tenth and final course was a nod to Lake Tahoe. Valrhona Grand Cru Chocolate. A beautiful blue lake of white chocolate consomme with small mountains of chocolate on the side. The chocolate is to be dipped in to the lake. What we didn't find out until later was that when citrus is added to the lake, it turns pink. Luckily, somebody didn't finish their lake so Jerrod was kind enough to bring us some lemon and lime wedges so we could try it. I don't think the birthday girl ever stopped smiling! read more

We're so fortunate to have Trokay so close to us in Reno. This is a remarkable restaurant that could be found in any great American city, yet chef/owners John and Nyna Weatherson chose to open it in Truckee. This talented couple, along with their absolutely amazing GM Roxy D and incredible staff, have all facets of this experience covered. From the moment you walk through the door you'll know you're in for something special, and as the meal progresses, you'll see that no detail was left out. Chef John helms the kitchen, out of which comes food that you will surely make you think. You'll think about the presentations. You'll think about the flavors. You'll think about the textures. You'll think about how it was made, but never quite figure it out. And from all of that thinking will come dialogue, discussion, and meaningful conversation with whoever you choose to share the experience with. From a loft high atop the dining room, Chef Nyna handles all of the pastry for the restaurant. Her dishes will appear recognizable, but after one bite, you'll realize these are far from what you expected. The pumpernickel bread stands out as one of the most remarkable bites of the evening. A lighter colored brown bread boasting deep, rich, roasted grain flavor, with hints of sweetness from chocolate and raisins, all melded together with a light glaze of beautiful butter. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the service team here because, in my opinion, they have the toughest role in the entire operation. The team here understands each dish from all angles. Questions about ingredients, preparation, and plating are all expertly answered. Dishes are delivered to the table with ladies served first, and always from the right, and the table reset after each course. They are simply incredible, and a team that could teach others a lot just through observation, but better yet consultation. The Chef's tasting menu is the way to go here. It changes quite often and highlights ingredients at the peak of the season. If you choose the 10-12 course menu, make an early reservation because you won't want to rush. We opted for the 6-7 course menu and that took 2+ hours to enjoy. As a tip, you can add an entree from the menu to a tasting, just ask your server. From our tasting menu, I truly enjoyed the salsify jerky and papadam. It was just so unexpected, and something I wished I'd had more to enjoy! The sweetbreads with black garlic were outstanding. Perfectly crispy, in a slightly sweet and creamy aioli with deep, rich pools of black garlic glaze studding the presentation. The Kauai White Shrimp entree that we added was exceptional as well. These shrimp taste like lobster, sweet and succulent, but are delicate and light. When thinking about dining at Trokay, it's important to realize that this is an experience, and not just a meal. We built our own tasting menu (and the chef gladly split the main entree for us - awesome) since there was a lot we wanted to try, but we also weren't hungry enough for their large, pre-set tasting menu. A few of our favorites (although everything was great) were: roasted corn bisque, "green eggs and ham" ricotta tortellini, and the duo of squab. The squab was our absolute favorite of the night. We made a reservation for dinner on a Saturday of a holiday weekend. We opted for the prix fixe with wine pairing. Quality of the food was great. The service was also very attentive albeit I wish the pace wasn't so fast given the cost of the whole experience but I think the restaurant closed early around 9pm or so. I do agree with previous reviews that their portion size was very off. Now I'm a small woman and I don't eat very much. Usually, after a full prix fixe meal I can't bring myself to finish the dishes, but these portions were so small that I was able to eat every single thing on the plate and was not really "full". Specifically our meal consisted of a few pieces of kale in a salad, a single scallop, a single 4-inch long slice of steak and a small 1.5-inch piece of cake. I understand that presentation at fine dining restaurants are different and I've been to my fair share of Michelin star restaurants, but fine dining doesn't necessarily mean not enough food. So quality of food was great, but $145 for a meal (which is higher than many Michelin star restaurants) where you don't leave full was not really overall satisfying for the price. read more

I've been eyeing this place since my snowboarding days. I remember passing by one night on a whim to see if we might get in. It didn't happen but as I looked through the window I could see the twinkling lights of the bar and everyone having a good time. I was so jealous but knew one day we would be lucky enough to get a reservation. Fast forward how many years and we've now moved closer to you! We've been staying home and only ordering out since March. You were the first place we decided to go to! I thought there would be no way to get a same day reservation but Trokay proved me wrong! Just like that we decided to eat there on a Sunday evening! Oh the glorious food! I wish I had taken more pictures but the shadow from the phone did not make for pretty pictures. I'm not the greatest of photographers anyways. We were treated with such warmth starting with the chef's wife commenting on our shared last names! Our waitress was helpful, patient, and not the least bit snooty when I had questions on the menu and finding a wine similar to Riesling. We picked and chose different items from the pre-fixe menu. It's our strategy so we can taste more of the menu as confirmed by our waitress when I asked if we had to pick the same items. We had summer squash bisque with red curry, which had tangy sweet, sour notes in every bite. I loved the shape of the bowl. It was like one of those fancy curved bathtubs but had a little indent where you can hold it with one hand. These are the things I notice, attention to details! My husband's Tempura of Maryland soft shell crab with hearts of palm, avocado, passion fruit and lemongrass was perfectly crispy and crunchy. I believe it may have been avocado cream, passion fruit sauce and lemongrass foam accompanying the crab. I had a little bite of the crab and carefully made sure every single sauce made it into my perfect bite! What a bite it was, sweet and tart altogether! Passionfruit took me back to the Hawaiian islands, I closed my eyes and I was on the beach with that bite! My warm salad of edamame looked like a forest floor it was impeccably plated where if you squint fairies will be fluttering by or walking amongst the shitake mushrooms. It tasted as amazing as it looks! My husband stole my bokchoy waaah! The angus beef tenderloin was perfectly rare and tender. It was perfectly paired with the buttery sweet heat of the corn. We teased one another who had the better dessert. No pictures because as soon as the plates were placed on the table we started digging in. The Valrhona Gran Cru chocolate with brownies and coconut marbles was decadent. The peaches "en Regalia" was light refreshing especially the sorbet! My grandpa is sick and there's been a lot of heartache, I've barely had an appetite and really just wanted a calm environment and yummy food that wasn't heavy. I ordered the winter vegetable salad and miso soup and feel like both dishes were exactly what my body needed. The salad was beautifully displayed and tasted incredible, without being too rich. Went here on a celebration dinner with my husband very nice people but not planning on returning. Atmosphere- Atmosphere of this place is very cool there is on the upper level and open kitchen concept and it is quaint but rich looking in the decor. Menu- There are 3 options that you can choose from: the prefixe menu, the chef's tasting menu and their general ala carte menu. I would say in general they have a decent amount of selections and I think everyone will be decently happy with those options. We tried the prefixe menu so I can't really comment on the portion size. I believe them I knew we chose had 5 or 6 courses which were decent but we decent but we did not leave stuffed. Parking- We decided to go on a Saturday night which was probly our 1st mistake though we had reservations and were able to be sat right away we drove around for about 10 minutes before we were able to get a parking spot across the street in the lot. Price - The menu that we had was $105 ok. As I mentioned before it was not enough for we left completely full. Service - The service was great and the waitress was very kind. Food- This is where the 2 stars were left though of the menu seemed very unique and interesting unfortunately how everything was put together it she said not paired well with everything that was on the plate. Presentation was absolute lovely but I never stopped and said, "wow, this is absolutely amazing with any of the dishes." My husband did enjoy the meat dish he had for his entree though. Overall- There were lovely people and perhaps I will try to come back again for lunch, but for a highlighted prefixe menu I was very disappointed in the execution of the dishes. read more

Didn't get around to review this place right after dining here. It was an interesting experience. I think this place deserves to be more popular. The menu writes like a page of a book, the ingredients are creative, modern and incorporates the best of the culinary world and local ingredients. There was a bit of lack of flexibility in terms of switching seats and modifying reservation (spring), it was strange given it wasn't too busy. But otherwise great service, friendly staff and great decor and very thoughtful details. They were a bit strict about choices of tasting menu on the table, which I thought could be more friendly and less isolating on the table. But no complaints about the quality of the food, the fish was really good for both the expensive and less expensive menus. Nice cookies. Interesting creative unusual desserts. And lots of creative use of new ingredients. I am intentionally a bit vague here because I ate here in spring so the menu has changed. read more

Bam! This is the creativity I love. Yes we spent more money but it was so worth it. The food never stopped coming. We went a la carte (actually ordered to much food). They kept bringing out "surprises" which were little chef creations - take note other restraunt's. The little gastronomic ball of juice was just really fun. Everything we had was done to perfection and had so many flavors in them - Corn Bisque, Foie Gras, Trout, Steak, Frog Legs. My favorite "surprise" was the little biscuits and jam" the salt and sweet was such a great combo. The menu was a little challenging as both of us had to order the same group, i.e. if one person order the tasting menu then the other person had to order it as well. The entire staff was welcoming and wished my partner a 'happy birthday' and even put a candle on his dessert--so thoughtful! My boyfriend and I dined at Trokay as a belated birthday present to me, and I'm glad we did. There were a few misses, but mostly it was all a hit. There is also a nice selection for vegetarian diners, such as myself. Hoorah! The Chef's ten course tasting menu is about $200 per person, and the whole table must participate, so expect the bill to be steep if you go that route. Other options include the Pre-Fixe, four course option, which is about $100 per person, and lastly you could order a la carte. I would only recommend the a la carte method for experienced Trokay diners, who are looking for something they have not yet tried. For us, the four course meal was the way to go. We left feeling peacefully full and happy. The hits: -The ramp jelly for the biscuits. So, so flavorful! I would like a jar for my own kitchen. -The vegetarian chickpea dish. Wow! Like most of the food, I am at a loss for words on how to describe it. The textures were varied, and the flavors were delightful. -The corn soup. Delicious! And the presentation was fabulous. -The "palate cleansing sphere". I don't know what that was, or how it is done, but it was refreshing and fun. -The service. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming. They were also able to spend some time chatting with us, which was nice. The misses: - The chip thing. The presentation was very unique, but it was a miss for me. (Confession... I also tried to eat the branch that it was presented on... it's not edible.) - The after-dessert-cookies. They were too sweet for my taste, and a bit dry. - The final bill. I really won't harp on this because I knew the price tag going into the meal (and the boyfriend was paying for it!), and Trokay is truly a "once-in-a-lifetime" (although, hopefully not) dining experience, but it is pricey, and probably the most expensive meal in Tahoe. We happened upon this quaint restaurant in Truckee while visiting from Reno. Upon entering, the beautiful wood slab bar is complimented by soft lighting and glass and steel accents. We were seated upstairs where it was a little quieter even though we were next to a large party. The menu was inventive, creative and so many dishes looked appealing. We all decided on the price fixed menu and were delighted with the options given within that menu. The food was presented with a flourish from several servers. Best meal I've ever had. We did the full tasting menu with wine pairing and it was worth every penny. The culinary artistry on display was unmatched. The service was excellent, as you'd expect, and the wine pairing was notable in three regards-- the wine was delicious, paired well, and perhaps most notable was that they were very generous. I'm just not sure where to start with the review and contemplated not writing it. But if it helps one person, I will have done good. I am a foodie and spend ridiculous amounts of money on food experiences. I never have an issue with it when I feel like it was worth it. I had checked out reviews on yelp and heard it was better than French laundry. I was excited for our grown up night out. But for some reason I had it in my head after reading yelp reviews that there were only two options, the four or ten course tasting. So if those are our only options, we always choose the ten. Be aware that there is no valet and parking in Truckee is brutal. We drove around for fifteen minutes before he dropped me off. This didn't set a great tone. I first have to say that the place is lovely, the service staff were great and the manager/hostess rocked. I appreciated that you could eat a fine dining meal without having to be all fancied up. It kind of sucked to see a young kid there. That in itself isn't an issue if they are quiet, but all you could hear in the restaurant was this little girl's high pitched voice. I was slightly confused when a couple next to us came and went quickly because I thought in the least, they had the four course tasting. Read on. We ordered a wine pairing to share. They brought us one glass. Most other high end establishments will bring you two glasses and pour between the two. That may not be a big deal, but when you're dropping this amount of ched, these details matter. There were a few items that were incredible. While the rest of the tasting was good, I was absolutely floored when we got the bill. Yes, I'm the dumb ass for not looking at the prices first. I expect to pay seven hundred dollars for a tasting at Michelin star restaurants like Le Bernadin but this was out of hand. I expected a high price tag but just not this high for ten courses. I have long pronounced that I was done with tasting menus and what did we do? I then realized that they have several a la Carte items and a tasting was not required at all. I'd go back to try a few a la Carte items but personally would never spend that much on a ten course tasting in Truckee, CA, especially without valet and listening to someone's kid. read more

We were looking for a nice place to have dinner while in North tahoe and stumbled upon this place. We read some background info on the restaurant and we're intrigued to try it out. Everything was excellent service and we decided to try the tasting menu on special that was $55 chef choice for the evening . They had two other tasting menus as well, one for $85 & one for $125 ppl also need Ala Carte menu. The presentation definitely was great, taste and ambiance 5 stars. Had one of the best meals in the last few years at Trokay. Everything was divine. The highlights were the spaghettini with black truffles, the soft shell crab and the scallops. Incredible service that is not at all pretentious which is perfect for Truckee. Great wine list with surprisingly low markups. I can't wait to return. read more

One of the many delicious ironies of eating a decadent multi course meal here is that it is hard to forget the fact that Trokay is located on a street named for a family of immigrants who almost all starved to death to escape this high elevation place to the relative safety of the valley floor below. One imagines that the Donners of today would prefer to order off the menu rather than dining on the half-frozen flesh of the recently deceased. Morbid though such thoughts may be, they do touch nonetheless on a greater truth, which is that a meal at Trokay is truly a hedonistic act made all the more memorable because of the unlikely, once out of the way, place where a restaurant of such undeniably top caliber is currently located. Of course, summertime in Truckee is quite a different experience than in the depths of winter, so enjoying the abundance of the season is certainly quite appropriate. If you happen to dine here at the bar, with room for six to eight patrons, you can soak in the street scene while savoring the flavors of your meal, especially if you begin the night early with a 5pm happy hour special of discounted cheese plates artfully arranged by the restaurant's creative pastry chef and paired with half priced wines from the by the glass menu. Starting at 5:30, you can send the kitchen your order by assembling it a la carte or opting all in for the prix fixe or multi course tasting menu. It's a stunning lineup, and the food will command your attention for its carefully selected, sometimes esoteric, ingredients and eye-catching arrangements. Still, my mind wandered to the parade of people on the street who paused to inspect the posted menu, gazed curiously inside, and then moved on. Trokay perhaps was a step too far for most, for whom a $200 price tag per person was not what they were expecting. As I ate, I remembered restaurants in Berlin where you can dine high end while crowds on the sidewalk munch happily on cheap but tasty food from sausage stands and Turkish doner kebab richly lavished with creamy garlic sauce. Maybe that's what Trokay needs, I mused while sipping a perfectly made stone crab consommé accompanied by a glass of Alsatian sparkling Pinot Gris. They should feature a menu item called a "Donner kebab": housemade flatbread layered with thinly sliced lamb al pastor served with roasted cipollini onions, braised Napa cabbage, oil cured cherry tomatoes, ancho chili dust, and a tart, savory tomatillo garlic aioli. Street food for foodies who prefer forks to fingers. Gastronomic humor and culinary whimsy have their place in Michelin quality dining, especially if you happen to be in a mountain casual spot like downtown Truckee. How about embracing the place a bit more with locally inspired menu items? A "Golden Nugget" risotto made with bits of golden beet, Yukon gold potato, and aged Gouda buried in a mound of farro, barley, sprouted wheat berry, and short grain California rice? An "Old Man Truckee River" crawfish gumbo served with brightly colored "rafts" of sweet pepper floating lazily on the surface? Maybe a "Southern Pacific" seafood "train" of scallops, shrimp, and oysters riding along on a railway track of nori, dried kelp, and diced daikon? A "Keep on Truckin'" entree made to look like all those 18 wheelers on I-80 that you passed at 75mph on the downgrade near Donner Lake just to get here: containers of red flint polenta cake and a cab of cubed Gravenstein apples and pastured farm egg (with headlights made of edible flowers) resting on axles of bison, wild boar, duck, venison, and quail miniature sausages? A "Jackpot" dessert made entirely from fruits you find on the slot machines in Reno, with chocolate coins wrapped in edible gold foil? Perhaps the only thing Trokay needs to become a true food lovers pilgrimage site is to take itself just a little less seriously, while honoring both its NYC culinary roots and the farm to table sensibilities of new California cooking. A lighter touch might smooth out the elitist edge and draw in a few of those tentative pedestrians on the sidewalk who are scared off by $50 pork tenderloin and $300 French wines. They may not order vintage Guigal on that first visit but perhaps an IPA and "Donner kebab" or "Golden Nugget" risotto with a glass of white Burgundy would be the gateway to future food lover's bliss. There still are things in this world left to be learned, but sometimes they need gentle laughter and genuine smiles to impart their elusive lessons. Fine dining can also be fun dining without losing its culinary soul in the process. Trokay inspires the imagination in ways that cannot be grasped from the street outside. To take that step inside requires a leap of faith as much as it does a healthy appetite (and decent credit line). Humor may well be the key that opens that door to discovery. Ginormous plates with tiny portions on a small and cramped table for two. Perhaps they should consider making the tables a bit larger or their plates a bit smaller. Overall friendly atmosphere but our waitor did not impressed us. We've been treated better at other fine dining restaurants. We paid $230 for two people which wasn't too expensive but the portions were small and we didn't feel full. Recommend the duck entree and the peanut butter dessert. Don't recommend the foie gras appetizer because it was blah to me but my partner enjoyed it. I thought that the soup for the won ton was a bit on the too salty side. Their red onion jam for the amuse bouche was great and we appreciated the many complimentary chef bites. Overall, we would come back again but recommend slight tweaks in the customer experience such as having the server let us sample the wine before we decide to go for the full pour. For instance, I did not enjoyed my cab -- it tasted like it's been open for a while and almost vinegar. If I had sampled it, I would have asked for a different choice. There was only 4 choices per red by the glass. I was disappointed in this few selections. read more

Trokay was phenomenal! Excellent food, beautiful presentation, top notch service, and a gorgeous setting. Our group of four ordered the 4 course prixe fixe menu with the wine pairing. Each item was delicious, including the amuse bouches. My favorite dishes were the corn soup, halibut, and the pistachio cherry dessert! The wine pairing was great - our sommelier was very knowledgeable about the wines, and very down-to-earth and friendly as well. The wait staff was great, and we felt well taken care of throughout the meal. The restaurant itself is beautiful - high ceilings and "modern mountain decor" make for a lovely space.
