They changed the parking to the next street and you aren't to enter at the flags like the ticket directions told you. I took a guided tour and learned about the Foy family that had a peanut and sweet potato farm. But the more important part of the story was about the Gullah Geechee people. I had first learned about them when I was in Beaufort SC. But there is a corridor that goes from Wilmington to St. Augustine, FL to protect the Gullah Geechee culture. Poplar Grove was built by the Gullah slaves who were very skilled. 59 lived on the property. They took care of the construction; lumber milling; brick making; tending to the livestock and crops as well as domestic chores. They need to be the focus of the tour.

The tour covered a broad time period from the eighteenth century until present but stayed within a reasonable walking area for the 1.5 hour tour. This is a great way to start your visit, to orient to the area and to learn something new about Wilmington and all of our history. I reached out a week before the 4th of July, and they were completely booked but Tyler found a way to accommodate us by moving some Captains and making it work! There was a huge storm that came ashore and I thought for sure we wouldn't be able to get out but communication with Tyler was exceptional, and the storm cleared and we ended up having a beautiful day! We self catered which was very easy even though Tyler had provided us with other local options.
