The Latimer House is located in Downtown Wilmington. Guided tours run on the hour and if you arrive…read moreearlier you can sit in the courtyard. This was my favorite of the three houses. It shows how the upper class lived with opulence. The house is not handicap accessible as the it was built in the 1852. The house was built by Zebulon Latimer and has three stories with a basement although not all areas are on the tour. The house is symmetrical as there are the same number of windows on each side. Three generations of the Latimers lived in the house before it became a museum and where the Cape Fear Historical Society is based. The iron water fountain in the garden used to be in a park in the middle of the road. The house has 14 rooms around 600 original items such as furniture, dishes, sculptures in fantastic shape as they had never been taken out of the shipping containers. The family tree was unique on the wall. You can even see where the original carpet was worn away. The house has a Victorian style decor with the marble fireplace, velvet curtains, and the intricate chandeliers. The walls in the foyer are painted to look like wallpaper. I enjoyed seeing all the photos. My docent was knowledgeable and friendly. She provided the stories of who lived in the house with empathy as some of the stories are sad. I highly recommend taking a tour of the Latimer House.

The real joy was the country store that Heather Burke has put together. Everything is so tastefully assembled, homemade, and delicious. They have home brewed beer (and lots of craft selections) fresh baked cakes and pastries (including gluten free), sandwiches, salads, ice cream and a super quaint gift store. We sat in the luncheon area inside, but there were picnic tables outside as well. We missed the bluegrass festival but if we can we'd love to make the Octoberfest. I highly recommend this place for those looking for a farm to table meal, good beer, or tasteful country store excursion.

The only reason I'm not giving this tour 5 stars (I wish 4.5 was an option) is that there were some communication issues between the cafe and the tour company. Clients of the tour thought we would get 30% off of food and the cafe staff seemed to have no idea what we were talking about. One thing I didn't like was you weren't able to buy individual tickets online, you had to purchase 2 or more -- thus making it difficult for me to tell party goers to buy their own ticket. I understand why, but it was also a little inconvenient. We had a group of 6 and then 2 other people accompanied us. Unfortunately, it is currently June and hot as balls here. We also booked right when the governor made it a requirement to wear masks due to COVID, so policy for the tour was you must wear a mask... even if you're outside walking. If you don't have a mask, you have to buy one from your guide and they're $5. Lame, but whatever, keep everyone safe, right? Well, the tour started at the Fayetteville train station and went from there. I honestly feel like it would have been really interesting had our tour guide been more enthusiastic. He was very hard to hear, even with a megaphone, but also didn't really have a good practiced script and kind of stumbled through the entire tour, leaving me questioning how well he actually knew the information... then basically asked for tips at the end and left us feeling obligated to give him something.
