I took her breastfeeding class and immediately knew she was excellent as what she does. Then, I hired her to be my doula for the birth of my first daughter. My husband and Lindsey were my team. She was there for me every step of the way, holding my hand, talking me through, pressing on my back, encouraging and remaining completely present. And our relationship continued after my baby's birth through breastfeeding struggles. I wouldn't have known it was physically possible for me to breastfeed, if it wasn't for Lindsey's expertise and support. Her visits to my home would last 2 hours. Then when she left, she was constantly available via email and text. She provided plan after plan for me and my baby to follow (because I love straightforward plans.) In a time that is completely overwhelming when everything is going right, I would have been completely lost without Lindsey. Now I write Lindsey with toddler nutrition questions and have attended her classes on such. Lindsey has so much to offer the community. Every time I hear that someone is in pain breastfeeding....I say (although I want to shout), "Contact Lindsey. It shouldn't hurt!" I know I'm just a random stranger online, but you really won't regret getting help.

It…read morewas nice that she was reachable through text, although, there was one time she did not get back to me for several days. What I didn't like was how it was made to seem that it was not normal for the baby to feed every hour to an hour and a half, breastfeed for short times, and breastfeed only on one breast right after birth, as well as making it seem that tongue tie was the problem for these issues. I was so worried because she informed me that tongue-tie could lead to speech problems later in life. She recommended to see one of the specialized dentists that would perform a surgery to improve the tongue tie. Our pediatrician reassured us that tongue tie was not an issue and that this was probably a way for the dentist and the Lactation consultant to earn money. Thankfully, we did not do any procedure for the tongue tie, and as she grew, her breastfeeding durations and length of time in between breast-feeding sessions improved. The last straw that I cannot forgive, is the recommendation for a smaller flange size. We had a virtual appointment where we reviewed how to use the spectra pump and she recommended a smaller flange size. I also had a Willow pump, but she didn't know how to use it. I looked it up myself and taught myself how to use the Willow pump. So I bought the recommended size 21 flange for the spectra pump. I tried it out and let the pump run for a couple of minutes or so. It felt a bit uncomfortable, but being new to pumping, I wasn't sure how it was supposed to feel. Another good tip I didn't receive, but would tell all new moms is that it may be a good idea to try the first time pumping with nipple balm or coconut oil to make it more comfortable. So after I tried that small flange size, it felt uncomfortable and painful breastfeeding. At first I would get twitches of pain randomly throughout the day. The pain gradually worsened, where the pain would shoot straight to my toes and I cringed in excruciating pain every time the baby latched and fed. Eventually a sore started showing up on my nipple and getting bigger and bigger, looking like the skin of my nipple was burned off. It was painful to have my clothes and just anything rub against the nipple. I never knew how easily my nipple would rub against things until now. I tried to rub my nipple in breastmilk after feeding, soak my nipple in salt water and in breastmilk multiple times a day and even took a break from breast-feeding and just pump instead, but nothing worked. So after a week and a half with no improvement, I made an appointment to see my OB/GYN doctor and she prescribed an all purpose nipple ointment. My insurance didn't cover it so I had to pay $55 out of pocket. Even using the ointment, my nipple was still having severe pain so I continued to pump instead of breast-feed. And all moms that pump know that pumping takes a lot of time and effort. When I went back to work, I had to wear a nipple cover to prevent my nipple wound from rubbing against my bra. After a month I was able to have her breastfeed again on that wounded nipple without cringing in pain. It took just about two months for my nipple wound to fully resolve. And now I have a scar on my nipple to remind me of the painful injury. I would recommend finding another lactation consultant that has more experience and knowledge.

She put us at ease and helped make a stressful situation much more pleasant. I hate that I can't remember her name!! Tall, blonde, that was incredible. She explained what she was doing when placing monitors, prepping me with IVs and what we were listening to. Just wonderful making sure she took care when checking me and not exposing my private bits to my father and his wife. Shift change happened and the next nurse seemed frazzled from the start. I know it was a busy night but she was exasperated each time she came into check my fetal heartbeat monitor. This baby is a mover and she yelled at me to sit still - ummmmm no. Then she's just flipping my blanket up, I'm the one trying to block my fathers view of my vagina. She could have asked him to stand outside. She showed 0% consideration to my situation with waiting for an open operating room or my personal feelings or physical comfort. Talk about night and day. This stands out even more since everyone else was kind, courteous, professional, reassuring, and all while doing their job. The Delivery Team was incredible! Explained every crazy step as they were prepping my body. They were incredible and I didn't just feel like a number. They had a crazy busy night delivering for moms after car wrecks and other terrible events (my hubby kept hearing about the ambulances coming in when he would wonder the halls) The delivery doc on call was super nice and went out of his way to make a personal connection with me - we'd both had hand surgery by the same surgeon. The staff were even funny when taking photos of my hubby cutting the cord. Outstanding combo of personal and professional. The nurses caring for us during our stay were the sweetest and most caring, even when doing super uncomfortable things to me. The lactation specialists, Heather & Sara changes my life and we're able to find a way to get my premie breastfeeding. Even better for me was the fact that the entire women's Bldg was on lockdown for children under 6 or 12 not being allowed due to the flu epidemic as well as no ill people allowed entry or access to visit. This alone gave us so much less to worry about. Thanks Betty Cameron Women's Pavilion staff on every level! Thank you so much for helping us bring this tiny girl into our world.

My experience with Novant Health in Wilmington left me feeling dismissed, unheard, and deeply…read moreconcerned about the quality of patient-centered care I received. I came in with worsening symptoms that I knew were not normal. Despite clearly communicating how my condition was progressing, I felt as though I was being medically gaslit. Because my lab values, MRIs, and echocardiograms appeared "normal," my very real and escalating symptoms were repeatedly minimized and ultimately labeled as psychosomatic. What made this even more troubling was the apparent bias I experienced due to my mental health history. I was open about having bipolar disorder, yet instead of being treated with thoughtful, comprehensive care, it felt like my concerns were filtered through that diagnosis--used as a reason to discredit rather than to better support me. When I expressed serious concerns about continuing my pregnancy--considering both my physical health and mental well-being, as well as the safety of my child--I was not met with compassion or proactive care. Instead, I was essentially told that I would need to "stick it out" for several more weeks, or wait until my condition, specifically preeclampsia, became severe enough to warrant intervention. Being told, in so many words, that I would only be taken seriously once my health took a dangerous turn is unacceptable. No patient should feel like they have to get sicker to be believed. Healthcare is supposed to be built on trust, listening, and early intervention--not dismissal and delay. I hope this review serves as a wake-up call to examine how patients--especially those with mental health histories--are treated when they advocate for themselves. I deserved to be heard. I deserved better care.
