Something is up with these guys, like they're going out of business or something. I approached them to make a custom door for our interior renovation project. Price was set at $2500, details hammered out, then... Nothing. It's been a month, and they refuse to return my calls, especially Mark, who I was working with. I and my finish carpenter have left half a dozen messages, spoken with other employees, even visited the place... Nada. Too bad, I found another millwork company to take my business. read more

Forget Home Depot, Lowes, and any other place that takes claim of the word "Lumber". We'd ventured to seven different "Lumber" stores over the past week, none of them carrying the oversized sheets of wood we needed, before finally finding this gem of a store right in our own back yard! The knowledge of the employees, along with their willingness to help & eagerness to please, plus an actual variety of wood, was heaven-sent. Unlike most stores, they'll actually cut whatever you need right down to your exact specifications. Another supposed lumber store told us that the person (yeah, as in one individual) who cuts their wood would be in later in the week. Another has school kids do their cutting during the days. Seriously? At the rare big-box stores that actually do cuts, you have to wait for their licensed person to become available -- if they're in at all. This is an old-school family owned business with a full lumberyard -- the kind your parents would go to when you were a kid. They even do millwork on site! Needless to say, we were immensely pleased with both the service & quality of work. After hundreds & hundreds of online transactions over the years, i've never written a product or company review, until now. I actually joined Yelp because businesses like this are becoming more and more rare. They are true professionals who enjoy what they do. When we allow places like this disappear, in favor of the big-box chains, our collective access to this level of knowledge & dedication suffers immensely. Eventually, all we're left with are a bunch of semi-interested, semi-skilled wannabe Mr. Fixits, who are more likely to give you a "what are you stupid?" look, then answer an innocent question from a newbie. The Last time I bought a piece of lumber at Trio's, it was a 2x6x20 piece. It was crap, knots, cracks. I ended up buying it at Menards. Better wood and better price. read more

There comes a time in every homeowners life when they either decide to tackle a home improvement project and not pay a contractor or handy man to do the job for them. While taking on a project on your own, you have choices as to where you're going to get your supplies and most likely ask people for advice and assistance regarding your project(s). When I decided to tear up my kitchen and needed to install new base molding and trim, I had my choices of going to the "big guys" (Lowes or Home Depot), but every visit I've had to either establishment had left me more frustrated by the time I walked out either establishment as I found the people who worked in their respective department to either be non-existent (no where to be found) or not nearly as knowledgable as they probably should've been. My father told me to visit Trio Lumber as it's a smaller family-owned business with a good selection of materials and people who are very knowledgable in the area in wich they work. Sure enough when I made my first visit to Trio, I was immediately greeted by a man in a flannel shirt who looked like a carpenter (sure enough he was). He took the time to answer all of my questions, help me select something that would work for the project I was working on and cut all of the wood up for me in the sizes I asked for. Every visit since then, I've received the same level of customer service from other members of Trio's staff. Very friendly, very helpful, and very down-to-earth. While this review sounds like a "too good to be true review", it most certainly is. Now while everything I've written screams "five star review", there is one thing that I and I'm sure many other would-be "do it yourselfers" will have a problem with - The hours that Trio Lumber operates. Trio has some very not consumer friendly hours...if you're a "9 to 5-er", good luck getting to Trio before or after work to pick up stuff you may need for your project. They are open on Saturday, which is great; however, they are not open on Sunday at all. I don't know about you other do-it-yourselfers out there, but I've never had a project go off without a hitch or needing to run back to the store to get more supplies, materials, etc. So, unless you perfect plan everything, your only real opportunity to run back to Trio is on Saturday between 8am and 4pm. If not, well, you're probably going to end up waiting until the next weekend to get what you need and resume your project...or go to Home Depot or Lowes and hope you can find what you need there. Overall, if you can look past their not-so-great hours, this place ranks way higher than any other home improvement store I've ever been too, particularly in the way of lumber and wood. Stop in and pay 'em a visit, you might be surprised with what you may find. read more

Trio Lumber has a good selection that beats the big hardware and home improvement stores. The people that work here are knowledgeable and more helpful than most places. They also have more specialty lumber that you can't get just anywhere. For example, we bought some bar stock for our basement project a while back and they not only helped us pick it out and sold it to us, but they also took the time to creating a spec/drawing for the bar that showed us how to design it and what else we needed. And on a side note they have an awesome store cat that will greet you and make you feel at home. read more
