It was a Saturday and I started randomly calling orthodontists. I reached Dr. Sacks' office and explained the situation and the pain my son was in. They were empathetic to our situation and told us to come right over. We got to the office, waited 10 minutes and then the Dr. saw us. It was like watching a NASCAR pit crew take the tires off a car. They popped the bands off the brackets, took out the old wire and inserted a new one with no questions asked. They were just helping a Dad out of town with a kid in need. A couple of things (a) I realize we got lucky it was the 1 Saturday a month the Dr. had office hours and (b) we were lucky he was able to slide us into his schedule...but the truth is his office could've told us were not patients, "sorry," or "our schedule is too full, sorry," and they didn't. To me that is not only a sign of a good doctor but a great person.

The woman who initially answered the phone rudely told me she couldn't see my child at that office and they couldn't open a new chart for her and tried to dismiss me; this was specifically after being told by the North Brunswick office that the treatment my daughter needed could only be done in the Greenbrook location. After calls going back and forth between North Brunswick and Greenbrook, Greenbrook finally called and said they would see my daughter, but I had to register her as a new patient, for whatever reason they would not transfer her file. It finally comes time to make her appointment and there are insurance issues. The office was completely unhelpful in trying to resolve them. The issue is finally resolved, and I made an appointment for my daughter two weeks or more ahead of schedule. I called to confirm the appointment, confirm the insurance, and let them know a different family member would be taking her. My family member showed up with my daughter only to be told they wouldn't see her- again because of insurance. When I called to find out what was going on, I asked to speak to the office manager or the person who handled the insurance, which I know to be a woman. Instead, after some whispering the young man who answered the phone came back on claiming to be said person. I was then told that someone tried to contact me and cancel the appointment but my mailbox was full. There were NO MISSED CALLS of any kind, my voicemail box WAS NOT FULL, and even if that were the case there is a secondary number and email to reach me. Smile Express knew full well their contract with HBCBS would be ending September 1, and my appointment was scheduled for September 2. Their attempt to contact me was on August 29th. Dr. Sugarman was the kindest, gentlest, and most compassionate man...a perfect pediatric dentist! He explained everything to my child and showed her all his tools before using them. My daughter was NOT happy to be there, but the hygienist and Dr. Sugarman were experienced and patient. The whole appointment only took 15 minutes, which was so convenient. Anyone with a baby knows how hard it is to keep them occupied for long periods of time. Dr. Sugarman addressed all my concerns and took away any worries I had.
