TennisDC does an excellent job of keeping the entry fees low and reasonably priced, while still providing great prizes from a sponsor (Tennis Warehouse gift certificates!). I like that TennisDC's website will keep track of your stats like your Win-Loss record (by year and in total), % of games won, and other fun tidbits of info. The people I've played have mostly been friendly and easy to work with on playing times/locations. Every now and then, there will a guy who throws a tantrum on the court. It's annoying, and I just try to avoid playing these people in the future. This seems to happen in every sport men play competitively, and I've seen it less in this league than other ones in DC, but such is life.

The park itself has two playgrounds, tennis courts, restrooms, picnic tables and a trail that hugs the creek. Because of its location, it's a popular park for all people- families, runners, nature lovers. If you're hungry while at Rose Park, walk to nearby Stachowski's Market for a pastrami sandwich on rye bread that's two meals.

I've been to these courts and the side I go on always tends to have one or several people smoking weed. It's tough to play a competitive match while you feel like you're getting high from the cloud of smoke. Any tennis court with night lights is a blessing--whether it's roller hockey, football, or even tennis, the fenced-in surface and the bright lights create a safe playing haven in the city. I love that my kids can just walk up to the neighborhood court by themselves and get a private lesson. (We just paid $10 more per lesson to add a child.) Classes would have been cheaper, but I couldn't find any near us at convenient times. Now we get to schedule our lesson when we are free (although we have been sticking with a pretty regular time of Sunday mornings). Private lessons are definitely more expensive than classes, but I've heard that instructors can run $50-100 per hour, so we feel that we are getting a pretty good deal. My kids really look forward to their lesson, and were sad at the thought of suspending lessons during winter. Their instructor, Jen, is very kind, patient, and thorough with working on all the different strokes and skills. This program has been a great solution for us because of the convenience and flexibility, as well as the low-key nature and special attention of private lessons.

At the Y, there are six pickleball courts, striped over three tennis courts. Court surface is great compared to other courts in the Arlington area. There are times/options for all level of play and many sessions are marked for specific levels of play so you know what you're signing up for. It does occasionally struggle with HVAC issues but they address it as much as they can, considering the age of the facility. But they are planning a renovation/new facility, so that's great. And consistent with many pickleball communities, the Y's efforts - drop-ins, tournaments, WhatsApp groups, etc. - have fostered a great community.
