Luckily, we ran into a British guy that knew exactly where a Cambodian restaurant was and out of desperation we agreed that would suffice. After he mockingly yelled, "You want Chinese food here in Paris? Are you F@%ing jokin mon?" and we all had a hearty laugh he pointed us to the right location. The area was quant similar to NYC the real estate is hard to come by in Paris so we had to make way for a family of five right in the middle of the kitchen traffic, this was not pleasant but the food made up for it. Lot's of varieties to choose from, tasteful and although not a direct Cambodian fanny I enjoyed the mix of noodle, vegetable and curry sauce known as kroeung. Yes, similar to Indian curry but straight out of the Khmer kitchen although, geographically it did not make sense....Indian curry in a Cambodian restaurant in the middle France they still came out with four stars after all why should I penalize them for my ignorance right?

After a delayed and missed flight (my fault) we were very tired and wanted to have our first meal…read morein Paris. Since I am very fond of the Cambodian cuisine and the French colonized Cambodia for almost 90 years, hoping to find some excellent grub. Service was very disorganized and the server kept trying to talk us out of ordering items saying "they are too big for the 3 of us to share". I said it is fine I still want to proceed with the order. The food and service were both a let down. The price was on the high end and we will not go back.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food at Sun Ly. I had been traveling in Paris for a…read morenumber of days and have been to a handful of Chinese restaurants and unfortunately, they have been sub-par at best. It was different here, you are like a kid in a candy store. You got your Chinese food, your Thai food, your Cambodian food, your Vietnamese food. You can pretty much get anything. Of the things we ordered the highlights were the Cambodian stew, the jicama rice wraps, and the thai curry. We also had the beef skewers, the chinese noodles, and the loc lac rice and although they were all good, they were not as good of the highlights. The Cambodian stew is something that I get to have once in a while and I have yet know what exactly is considered authentic but I felt that this one had the smokey flavor that I am accustomed to. In addition, it was packed with meat, veggies, and potatoes so you feel like you are really getting a deal for this dish. I suggest eating it with a bowl of rice to soak up the soup. It brought back memories of when my parents would ask me to try this dish and me not liking it before but growing to thoroughly enjoy the dish and hoping for more. Next were the jicama rice wraps. It is jicama, dried shrimp, cilantro, green onion, pork, and other ingredients all mixed together and wrapped inside a rice sheet. Similar to a churng fun at dim sum but this comes like a bun but wrapped with a rice sheet instead of bread. Similar to the Cambodian stew, this was packed with filling and you can dip it in fish sauce to add more flavor. I think they cooked it well because the filling felt like a quick stir fry so that there is some oil and wok hei flavor. Finally, the curry. I was already full at this point but I still couldn't resist and this once was unique. Not similar to other curries I have had in the States so I can't compare it to anything I've had. It had a similar texture of the Cambodian stew and didn't have the coconut milk that I have come accustomed to for Thai curries. The bowl was filled to the brim with meat and other ingredients. I think Sun Ly is the leader in Chinese food, at least for the Chinese restaurants in that particular plaza. I tried two other restaurants that are literally adjacent to Sun Ly and they could not compete. I think Sun Ly had the quality of food that is unmatched in terms of Asian restaurants in Paris. If I am craving Asian food during a future trip to Paris and I am in District 13, I will definitely try to make to back to Sun Ly over the others. The prices are comparable but the quality and variety of food is unmatched.

My starter was a crunchy spring roll type thing served with delicious mint and lettuce leaves. The mint really made the dish special. My main course was chicken in a red curry and coconut sauce. I ordered: -Amok poisson- white fish, yellow coconut milk curry, basil, bamboo shoots, and bell pepper (cooked in banana leaves) -Noodles sautéed with vegetables -White rice I also had one of my friend's spring rolls & tasted the sliced banana, tapioca, and warm coconut milk. I was disappointed. The white rice was undercooked; the sautéed noodles were cold, oily, and had only a few bean sprouts and carrots by the way of vegetables; the banana dessert needed more sugar; and the Amok poisson could have been lovely if it weren't for a slight fishy wateriness that kept cutting through the flavors of curry and basil. The spring roll was the best part of the meal - fresh, ingredients well-dosed. The servers were friendly enough, but I really didn't appreciate their **walking through the dining room at 10:30 pm, placing checks on the tables, saying "we're closing," and then dragging the trash bin and baskets through the dining room right in front of all lingering diners.** Chez Ama may not be in the center of Paris, but 10:30 is early--anywhere in France-- for kicking out customers. I might come back, but probably not. Not when there are restaurants like Tamarind, whose red curry Amok poisson with sticky rice was a pure pleasure.
