The grilled pork was salty, there were barely any veggies underneath, and the vermicelli was improperly cooked. My mom's Thit Bo Luc Lac (shaken beef) was so salty that it was inedible, even after we ordered an extra bowl of white rice to sop up some of the sodium. The extra rice was 2 euros, but not as appalling as 3 euros for tea! I keep warning my mom not to eat at these subpar restaurants in the "Chinatown" area, and I think this experience finally put her off of it.

They offer the same menu at the same prices, so don't worry about which you pick. We chose the left, an adorably decorated, intimate space, that smells incredible (strong, but pleasant) as soon as you walk in. There are some usual Thai goods like lychee cans or rice noodles for sale on the shelves, in case you were doubting how authentic they are. I will never get used to Paris prices for Asian food, but for the quality I've experienced so far in this city, at least this was up there.Entrees are 8 to 11 euros, and main dishes are 13 to 22 euros. My duck pad thai set me back 16.50, which I guess considering the cost of the meat is okay, but I can't believe my friend's standard veggie pad thai was 13.50! I was intrigued by the idea of duck with the usual pad thai flavor profile, but a bit disappointed with the meat. It was tough, and took points away from an otherwise great dish. It wasn't as spicy as I was hoping it would be either, even though I asked for it to be extra spicy. At least our server brought me some dry chili flakes to try to make up for it. The portion was enough to have some leftovers to bring home, which she packed up nicely - and even threw in chopsticks! Unfortunately, there was only one kind of wine (Bordeaux) that you could get by the glass. For anything else, you'll have to get a demi or full bottle. There was an interesting Thai liqueur that our server likened to vodka, and a longish list of teas if you were feeling adventurous.

The menu options you see on Yelp are still the same, but sometimes they will have special proteins, they had spicy Tofu and something else I forget this day. The formule set menu of a sandwich plus a drink and dessert is what I got and I thought it was a great value. Good choice of different bottled tea drinks and other drinks. Friendly hello, server was patient with my poor French and spoke English well. I loved it that they asked me if I wanted the sandwich spicy or not - yes please! Merci! Know that is an option and that you can ask for that. I ordered regular pork but should have ordered the BBQ as that is what I prefer, but the regular was fine. It is marinated and tender, and it's served cold. I'm so used to the hot protein, it threw me off a little, but it was delicious regardless. Fresh crunchy roll, fresh veggies and plenty of protein. There is limited seating - and a bit cramped for us folks who are not on the thin side, but I was comfortable on the bench along the wall, gave me a great view of the door and street outside. In nice weather, I could see it being great to sit outside. While I was there for 30 minutes or so, a constant stream of regulars stopped by to order to go - always a good sign. As I left there were seven folks inside and it was packed.

My partner and I split a Beef Bo Bun. It was spectacular!!! The spring rolls and wonton added a nice crunch to the otherwise already perfect dish. Neither one of the 2 personnel in this small restaurant spoke English. It's a small place with a prix fixe menu for 2 courses, with dessert optional. It seems they've done some "upgrading" of the decor since first opening and had moved away from the a la carte menu. My husband started with the pork dumplings -- simply some of the best I've had .... I ordered some more to take back to our apartment for breakfast the next morning. The wrappers are made in-house and are light and fresh and perfectly steamed, then flash fried (but are not greasy at all). The are stuffed with perfectly cooked ground pork and lots of scallions and other small dice vegetables). Dipping sauce is standard black vinegar. I started with a noodle stir-fry that was just okay -- it could have used more heat and flavor. The noodles were well prepared though. My husband ordered a chicken stir-fry with chestnuts. The chicken was juicy and moist and the sauce was delicious. My husband doesn't generally like Chinese food, but he was smitten with his choice. I ordered a spicy beef stir-fry -- unfortunately, the slices of beef were all overcooked. And, they don't speak much English so I didn't feel comfortable asking them in my broken French to make a new one for me with rarer beef (although now, after being here for nearly 3 weeks, all I need to say was "saignant" and the chef would have understood. The only reason why Au Vieux Cèdre's bewitching Shawarma does not appear in the pages of "A…read moreMoveable Feast" is because the small Lebanese joint opened its doors more than half a century after Ernest Hemingway lived (and ate) literally around the corner... A stone throw away from La Place de la Contrescarpe, and Hemingway's apt at 74 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine (the place where Verlaine died as well), I can assure you that the voracious writer would have devoured many a shawarma, kastas or falafels, as these are indeed "moveable feasts" that you can savor on the go while on your Paris explorations, without being rattan chair bound elbow-to-elbow with other Parisians, as you surely will be (and should be) eventually. This little hole in the wall has indeed the best shawarma I've ever had in three continents, and it's a must have for those on literary pilgrimages in the area. Also try the Soujouk; squashy spicy beef with tomato and hummus. This was my favorite fast food spot while in my 3 month + Paris residency, and the perfect antebellum when sauntering the quaintness of the Rue Mouffetard. Part nostalgia, part mouth-watering deliciousness... even though he didn't have an opportunity to revisit and satisfy his craving this trip, J & I took advantage of a free afternoon to wander here for a quick bite. AMBIANCE: Its a hole in the wall. Literally. What do you expect? There is enough room to perhaps duck out of the rain (if there is any) and wolf down your meal while standing... but it's better to just take everything to go and people watch in the round-about a few meters down the road. SERVICE: So friendly! The guy behind the counter was very sweet and made some small talk while he prepared our order. FOOD: J really enjoyed his meal. I thought it was ok... I guess VC hyped it up way too much for me (disappointed). The meat was a mix of tender & dry, while the flavor was also a little hit or miss for me. I ordered a Soujouk for myself based on Yelp reviews, and liked that much better. Prices are extremely reasonable (as all these shawarma/hole in the wall places are...), and we left satisfied. OVERALL: Since this place lacked the wistful longing for me that it had for VC, I'd say Au Vieux Cedre would be around 3 stars for me. However J really enjoyed the meal, so I'll bump it up to 4. For most tourists, this would be quite out of the way, but it is a nice way to see a different side of Paris (much younger and "hipper"), plus you get a chance to walk past the Pantheon and see a nice view of the Eiffel Tower on your way back out through the Latin quarter.
