My kiddo in the stegosaurus ravine...
    Peter M.

This is a short, but wonderful little hike, and while one set of gentle stairs provides a lone obstacle for strollers, is it still very accessible for most every level of trail enthusiasts. There is a number of gentle ups and downs, including a roughly 40 yard switchback to the bottom of a ravine where you can see fossils and imprints of where dinosaurs stomped through the mud of a great inland sea some 2.3 million years ago. The trail itself winds through Fossil Trace Golf Course, and if you enjoy the game, you will REALLY want to play. Simply spectacular surroundings. If you are entertaining out-of-towners, follow this short hike up with a drive to the top of Lookout Mountain by heading due west. A stop at Buffalo Bill's Grave at the top provides scenic views of the whole of the metro area - just watch out for the throngs of bicyclists climbing and descending the winding road.

First of all, it was SUPER hard to get to this trail. I'm from IL and we went to CO for Spring Break and found this trail mentioned on Lookout Mountain and thought "I have boys who love dinosaurs, let's go!", so we went. It took us almost an hour to figure out exactly how to get there. Well for all you first timers, if you're coming directly from Lookout Mountain, once you drive over the highway, take the first right into the School of Mines parking lot (I'll have a pic posted with marker showing where we parked). Parking is cheap during the week, we paid $1 for one hour. There is no actual path to get to this trail, like I said it took forever to find. I posted a picture of the "path" we took from the parking lot to get there. Once we were finally on the path we got to see some pretty cool fossils. Keep in mind that this trail has some areas kids can fall into, so keep an eye on them at all times. When it comes to the end, it's really just a golf course. You can't go into the golf course so you do have to turn back around and walk back the same way you came. It's an easy walk so it wasn't an issue. It was a pain to find but my boys enjoyed it! Hopefully this helps some of you to experience it :)

I'd say 25-30 spots? Keep in mind, this trailhead is POPPING. It's always busy, so know before you go. You can park at different places roadside, which will add to your hike total. The hiking trail is narrow, at times rocky, but mostly dirt. There are some nice views. If you're looking for a serene hike though, this definitely isn't it. I can't tell you the last time I encountered over 100 people on a hike. But again, it makes sense considering where it is. You get some nice views of the Great Divide and even the Coors brewery. There's not much shade, so sunscreen and a hat are a must. I'd probably do this hike again in the winter to avoid the crowds. It's one of the closest hikes to Denver and for the people who've never hiked a mountain I'm sure they'd love doing this one.

It felt like hiking 10 miles for hours, but was only 3 miles in one hour hahah. The only negative is there is no shade, so I got a really bad sunburn. I would give this a go again though! I will also say, we took a wrong turn at the loop and ended up going through a less traveled path. I'm not sure exactly where we went wrong but we ended up at the peak somehow. The trail was barely traveled on. It was strange. Either way a fun one!

Fantastic day trip from Denver for curious kids…read more My sister-in-law took the kids and me to Dinosaur Ridge for a picnic lunch, visit and ramble. It was a great way to spend a few hours outdoors and away from screens. There are ample picnic tables outside the visitor's center. Parking can be a little more limited, but you can park on the road outside and walk in. We did go into the visitor's center ($5/pp). There was a very nice volunteer there who talked to my son with enthusiasm and patience. The center is pretty small, but there were enough things for my son to examine and think about. He's 9 and well beyond his dinosaur obsessive days, but he was still curious about thing things he saw. The younger kids enjoyed digging for fossils in the sandbox outside. We also hiked along the walk way that spans between the visitor's center and the Red Rocks area. The walk is pretty level, and there are labeled areas that show dinosaur tracks and fossils. The views are also stunning of the whole Denver area basin. I'd happily return.

You can also do the bus tour (it looked popular!) there is a gift shop and exhibit area. There are also several picnic tables here if you want to do lunch before the ridge. Worth the stop, especially with kiddos! They would find this cool!

This time I went to Golden Cliffs trailhead on the south side. There were two trails (0.4 & 0.8 miles). The shorter looked more difficult indicating a steep climb to the rim. I chose the longer one. I was wrong. The 0.8 mile trail was less used and I had trouble finding the trail. I took several dead-ends that brought me to the base of the cliff for climbing routes using ropes & pitons. I eventually made the entire distance in 1.5 hrs. The trail map at the trailhead said most difficult and it was right. Once on top I took the North Table Loop trail 0.3 miles to Tilting Mesa trail. I hiked another 0.3 miles to Rim Rock trail (1.7 mile) which is a big loop going to the north rim. Weather was rolling in with heavier clouds and wind. On a clear day it would be hot. I took a video at the north rim at the 2nd highest spot on 6,551 ft. The highest is Lichen Peak at 6,552 ft. I finished the loop and headed back west. There are no restrooms/porta potties or water on the mesa top. So I descended to the west parking lot. The 0.4 mile segment is probably at 6-8% grade. I looked at the trail map. I could go back up to the top and negotiate the steeper route (0.4 miles) to the Golden Cliffs trailhead where I parked my car or take a circuitous trail (1.3 miles) along the west and south side. Very scenic and the trail was clearly visible. I startled a mule deer. So if your looking for a good hike, start on the west side and get to top for a level hike. Several trails go down the east side to access other trails including one that takes you to New Terrain Brewing.

There is nothing more magnificent than seeing natural beauty created by our awesome God. The amphitheater was a sight to see. It's amazing that it was man made. There are a total of three marked hiking trails. We hiked the difficult and medium trails. They weren't that bad at all. The different elevation did make it tough at times, but what an accomplishment it felt when we finished. Also, the view along the way was great. So don't forget to stop and just look around! They also have an easy trail, which is nice, especially if you're taking small children. The visitor center was neat as well with some fun facts and history. There is also a Trading Post where you can purchase souvenirs. The shirts are crazy expensive, but if you shop in the clearance section, it is more affordable. If you're hungry, there is one restaurant there with reasonable prices, but of course more on the pricier side. However, I think it would add to the experience if you brought your own food and picnicked along the way or eat at the end. You can definitely spend a whole day here! It's great for a family outing, date, friends hang out, or even just to enjoy solo. I highly recommend visiting this place, especially if you're from out of town.

Also, the visitor center has a few exhibits on the history of the Red Rocks Amphitheater (and celebrities and rock stars who have performed here). It's also worth picking up a local map so you can estimate which hike to take based on the amount of time you have available. The trails do not provide any shade, so a hat and sunscreen are essential. If you have a few hours to spare while visiting Denver, be sure to plan a day trip here if the weather is nice!
