If you're looking to get in shape while spending time learning new skills in a great atmosphere…read morewith an awesome small group of people, do not hesitate to join classes at the Durham School of Martial Arts! Sifu Keith is incredibly upbeat and energetic and takes time to get to know each student personally and recommend an exercise plan both inside and outside of his gym. I have been attending his cardio kickboxing class 3x a week for 6 months and have lost weight, gained muscle, and gained confidence. The class is welcoming to both beginners and more advanced individuals. Highly recommend!

I was injured in Glenn's class by a mistake of another student, Glenn had plenty of private and in class sessions with me, where I trained with him directly and with another instructor. During my experience with Glenn after injury, he searched my property and belongings while I was training, he insulted me, and he overcharged me for products. Not only did Glenn break the law, he also changed his narrative when I inquired about insurance for the injury I endured. Glenn initially encouraged my training and complimented me, he met my family and grandfather who saw us training together, as soon as I inquired about other insurance information/injury liability issues, Glenn decided to call me mental. My parents found out about this and encouraged me to sue him. Glenn also agreed to forward information to the founders of Systema that I had preorganized as a courtesy to them. He lied and kept it for himself. Glenn also searched through my phone while asking me to face the wall and do an exercise, I turned around and caught him browsing my phone. Our family invited Systema in our home, my doctors encouraged my training for recovery with my ACL tear, and in the end Glenn cowered with insults and discrimination. https://easternnc.app.bbb.org/complaint/view/11147125/c/h99t9c Glenn will not succeed in holding his faulty business, or in censoring individuals he has directly wronged. 0/5 stars, needs to be banned.

Harold (the owner and main coach) was my first boxing coach, a few years back when he was fighting and coaching out of a different gym. We worked together for maybe 12-18 months before his own path as a fighter took him down to Peru. During our time together, he brought me a great distance in my knowledge and appreciation of the sport. I came to him with probably a zero or even negative skill level, but serious enough to want to learn, and Harold met me exactly where I was. We worked a ton on the fundamentals; I remember Harold saying once that people used to call him "Mr. Fundamentals," and that's definitely true about his approach to training. It's one reason I'd recommend him as a coach, because a lot of people/gyms will teach skills/movements that aren't as practical or are too advanced for people without a really strong base in the fundamentals -- essentially teaching cool moves for their entertainment value vs. their usefulness in competition or an actual fight. But when someone makes you work on the fundamentals, as Harold does, it's really a way of taking you seriously; it's preparing you for what you actually need as an athlete. Harold's great at calibrating a workout for someone's conditioning level, as well; it's not like he'll have you doing wind sprints right out of the gate, and if anything I probably should have learned the value of roadwork on my own way sooner. And so I'd say the most important aspect of Harold as a coach, besides just being fun as hell to train with and knowledgable about all aspects of MMA, was his patience. For me, training with him was having the space and the freedom to screw up over and over until I got something right (which in my experience since then, at least, is what good training actually is). Proud to have followed his progress as a fighter and coach, proud to have been hit in the face by this guy, and proud to have hit him a few times, too. Go train up there with Harold and learn some things! You'll love it.

I decided to try barre because I am not a fan of high impact workouts. Don't be fooled by the minimal movements - these classes are no joke. But, the instructor was so friendly and encouraging the whole time and I didn't feel embarrassed or out of place. The studio is clean and everyone is very energetic and welcoming! It really is a fun and positive environment.

I've checked out other barre places around the Triangle, and this one was right by my house! The class is exactly what you'd expect from a Pure Barre class (scripted, a routine you would know). You enter the studio, sign in, and set up inside the room. Barre socks are a must, so bring some with you. There are bathrooms both outside and inside of the actual room, and only one wall has a mirror - so you aren't forced in front of one if you don't want it. Both classes I took started late, which is annoying, but it was the first week they were open. I definitely think it takes more than once class to feel the workout - you'll spend the whole first class just understanding what's going on, so if you have the opportunity, a class package is the way to go. I purchased the 4 classes for $40 newcomers special (14 days to use). Unfortunately some of the days the studio was closed due to snow, but the owners were more than accommodating about adding a few days back onto the pass to cover it. However, it was nearly impossible to get into a class! Even a full week ahead of time, I could not get into a class or on a wait-list - AT ALL (I'm talking the entire weekend was full). So despite the owner's accommodation with adding a few days on to the package, I was only able to use two classes anyway. My suggestion: If you have time to take class during the off-peak hours (mid-day? I have no idea) then it's worth it, but otherwise, any kind of package that can expire might not be worth your money. This might be due to the fact that they just opened a few weeks ago, so hopefully as they hammer out a better schedule, include more classes, etc. this won't be an issue.
