I have been with this school on and off for almost 20 years now. The training is fantastic and the atmosphere is superb.

DO NOT SIGN YOU CHILD UP FOR A 3 YR BLACK BELT CONTRACT. Your child will undoubtedly tire of the repetitive "forms" and get sick of the program, with rare exceptions. If you do this, I encourage you to set up month to month payments so you/your child can stop as you wish and don't throw away money. This is EXPENSIVE. The gear cost is exorbitant. There are a thousand different colored belts and graduations; not surprisingly, this is because the ATA gets a payment for each graduation. For higher belts, there are two graduations for each color. 1 X (color) belt "recommended" and 1 (same color) belt "decided". Why are there so many?!!! At higher levels, there are required mid terms and boot camps and each cost a hefty fee. There is also a substantial yearly ATA membership fee. These things add up quickly. Instructors are mostly good, especially for kids. For adults, instructors treat you with respect, but respectfully like a child. Imagine calling kids "sir" and having to hear their life advice; that's what it feels like. There's a patronizing attitude, so this may not be a good training environment for adults. I suggest you take up Kra or some other practical martial art where instructors don't have a superiority complex. In many cases they are the ones who could benefit from some advice in all honesty. I could not keep track of the number of students who keep going due to to parents signing them up for a contract of several years, but are miserable. Please avoid this contract completely.

At first I was super excited as I called and was told they do birthday parties and was quoted a great price. Confirmed with the guy on the phone the date I needed and then we scheduled time to meet for a tour and to go over paperwork. Met the next day and it was as if we had never spoken. The guy tells me they require a two weeks notice because they need to send out emails. Basically told me he couldnt help and turned my son and I away. I had already explained to him on the phone 7/18 that I needed 7/30. So disappointed that they were so ready to turn away business. They seemed very frigid and dishonest...the exact opposite of what I want to teach my son.

"Strike First! Strike Hard! No Mercy!"…read more If that is the kind of dojo you're looking for - go elsewhere. Courtesy. Integrity. Modesty. Perseverance. Indomitable Spirit. Honesty. Courage. Those are the virtues painted on the walls of Karate International West Raleigh. They are upheld in our dojo by Mr. Scott Weinberger and his staff. Not just by teaching, but by example. The word "Shihan" means "master teacher" in Japanese. That is the title Scott - a sixth degree black belt - has earned through years of both study and instruction. And it is a title that is well deserved. I, personally, have had the privilege of studying with a number of extremely talented martial artists - some of them even higher ranking than Scott. With no disrespect to any of those fine individuals, Shihan Weinberger is by far the best marital arts teacher I've ever had. Moreover, he and his staff have fostered a true sense of community at the dojo. Children, teens, seniors, moms and dads, and, yes, super fit, tough as nails warriors. We have them all. All skill levels, all walks of life, all are welcome. The air is charged with camaraderie, bonhomie, and good humor. Consider yourself warned. If you come to West Raleigh you will make friends. It's inescapable. So, what to expect? Your first one or two sessions will be awkward and you'll feel nervous or anxious. Everyone does. Give it three sessions. You can thank me later. You will get in shape. You will do plenty of push-ups. You will stretch. Your legs are going to be on fire some days. You'll be out of breath and want water. It'll never be overwhelming - again all skill and ability levels are present - but there is also no ceiling. How hard you can push yourself is up to you. You will do kata - a lot. You will spar - a lot. You will learn to fight and defend yourself. You'll do weapons practice. You will gain confidence. And you'll have fun doing it. Because the little secret the "No Mercy" crowd don't understand is that being a good person, surrounded by other good people, does not detract from becoming a good martial artist. It enhances it. Because you want to be here. Because you can trust your partners to keep you safe, while still pushing you excel. Because knowledge is shared, not hoarded. Because - with time and practice - you will come to not just know and respect those virtues painted on the wall - you will come to embody them.

Started this and really got involved and interested because of Scott. Without a doubt the greatest teacher/coach I've ever had. He made me feel comfortable with being new to the sport, and taught me real life scenarios where what I learned would be applicable. I'd recommend this specific dojo to anyone even remotely interested in martial arts.

The equipment and gym itself is okay, some machines are broken and being fixed all the time but can be worked around. The downfall comes to amenities. My first morning workout after joining I find out that they have no towels ( sweat/showers ) I thought that was a bit odd but okay, I started bringing my own towel. During the entire winter of 2024 they had no hot water . It took months and months for them to repair the hot water. Taking an ice cold shower when it's 30 degrees outside SUCKS . Then there's cancellation. I tried to cancel for so long and I got the run around so many times that I ended up just blocking them on my card. After all this they tried to send me a collections letter as well. That will not be paid. As I have joined another gym, with a full size pool, brand new and nice amenities for less than 50 dollars a month and you can cancel ANYTIME. Highly do not recommend this place, there are so many other competitive gym options to go to.
