The Wall2Wall Sports Complex in Mason has an arcade, a large concession stand with plenty of tables and chairs, softball (35 and 45 mph) and baseball (35, 45, 55, and 65 mph) batting cages, and it also hosts lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, dodge ball, and flag football events and opportunities, but soccer is really what it's all about. Wall2Wall has three indoor soccer fields, two which are regulation size and one that is a lot smaller. I had several friends in high school who played soccer, a few of which even play Division I NCAA soccer now, and they all played at Wall2Wall during the winter. They have the best facilities around, and they offer great high school-level, adult, and youth leagues (11v11, 8v8, 7v7, 6v6) during the winter and summer, as well as the All Star Soccer Academy youth camps and the Sunday Coed league (2 girls + 3 guys + goalie) during the summer. The fields are in great shape, and the place really is wall to wall soccer as they have Wallbangers (like Fat Head posters) of top footballers Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry, and Ronaldinho, among others throughout the complex. This weekend they will be holding the annual David Fulcher All Pro Youth Football Camp, while in August, Major League Lacrosse star Joe Walters will run a lacrosse camp. Wall2Wall is also a great place for a birthday party, and it is also the home of the Ignition premier sports-specific training program and the Tristate Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center. Unfortunately when the order came back, one jersey (while fitted and ordered properly) came back much tighter than the "try on" experience. Expecting the worst case scenarios of buying another and waiting weeks for it to be ready we drove to Soccer Plus (over 20 miles from home) and asked what we could do. If your grew up in the Blue Ash, Montgomery, or Symmes Township areas and played baseball and/or…read moresoccer, chances are you've been in contact with the Blue Ash Sports Center off of Grooms Road. Better known sometimes as simply "Grooms," the Sports Center has 11 baseball fields, two soccer fields, and replicas of Crosley Field and the Riverfront Stadium field, all on 37-acres right in Blue Ash. I played and watched my older siblings play at Grooms for many years of baseball and soccer, but I also have gone their for the annual Fourth of July bash: Red, White, and Blue Ash. Red, White, and Blue Ash is basically an all-day event, this year running from 2:00-10:35. There is always a lot of fun, which includes free concerts (this year headlined by the Charlie Daniels Band) and topped off by the best fireworks show in the area, put on by Rozzi's Famous Fireworks. "Grooms" gets swamped on July 4th each year, as it is the biggest event at the complex, but its neatest feature is the re-creattions of Crosley Field and the Riverfront Stadium field. Crosley Field closed in 1970, but according to the Blue Ash Sports Center website regarding the replica field, "Crosley Field was reconstructed by using the blueprints from the original stadium, including the same field dimensions, grass infield, the infamous outfield terrace, and the same dimensions, height, and angles of the outfield wall." Some of the original seating and a scoreboard replication of the last ever pitch make it very close to the original field, while the Riverfront re-creation so far includes simply the same outfield dimensions and walls as that of the most recent ex-Reds home. While I never played on the big fields, the fields I did play on were top of the line. In fact, when I drove up to the complex this week, there were a ton of men working on the fields to keep them in tip-top shape. "Grooms" really is a special place in the City of Blue Ash, and even if you don't play sports, surely you'll have to check out some time on the Fourth of July.

Large diamonds surround Crosley for softball and baseball. Towards the entrance, you'll find smaller diamonds for little league. There are a few perfectly level soccer fields that I'm sure are a joy to play on. The complex has plenty of "out of danger" parking as I like to call it where I don't have to worry about softballs, baseballs, or soccer balls hitting my car. I enjoy playing here because most of the softball fields are expertly maintained. I don't have to pick out large rocks from the infield dirt. The outfield grass could be cut a little lower, but at least the field is mostly level out there. A unique aspect of the Riverfront field is a normal pitcher's mound, meaning it's raised. It makes for some interesting bounces that you don't normally see in softball on balls hit up the middle.

This is my experience in Little Toes; I think the experience for older kids is pretty different. Our first session was on Sunday mornings alternating 9 am and 10 am. There were only about 7 kids playing at once, so it wasn't too bad when a few of them weren't listening, etc. We liked that our son was playing with new kids and learning team work, and enjoyed it enough to sign up a second time. This session, we did Saturday mornings at 9 am and they had way too many kids. I'd estimate there were at least 15 kids (maybe more) when everyone was there and it was just way too many. While everyone seems very nice, some of the coaches just aren't as loud and can't wrangle the kids as well. Coach Ben had a great rapport with the kids and seemed to get them into the activity better. One thing that is frustrating with this age group is the amount of parents who go on the field and don't let the Happy Feet coaches do their job. They follow their kids around or just stand on the wall, get in the way to take photos from the field, and so on. We get an email each week from Happy Feet asking the parents to stay off the field unless their kid really needs them, but it is ignored by some. I counted seven parents on the field today and it becomes a safety issue at that point with everyone going in different directions. Now that our son is older, I think we'll try some other programs, but we were glad to have had the experience and glad Happy Feet gets started with such young toddlers.
