I often wonder how shops like this survive, but I am glad they sometimes do, when you walk around a place like this with jammed with so much treasure and trash that you can barely move, it is like entering another world (they don't even have a shop sign), I really find it fascinating. I never know what I will find, never anything I need but always something I want which I had never thought about before. They sell old cutlery and crockery, old books, vinyl, cameras which are probably 100 years old, teapots, old clothes a great place for costumers. Some of the old toys are fascinating too. Last time I was in there I saw an amazing kids' table and chair set in the shape of a cartoon-style red-and-white mushroom. It took serious willpower to walk away from that... From cushions to quilts to kitchenwares and frames, you'll be tempted to buy way more than you can fit in your house. If you're renovating, you've got an even better excuse to spend up big. Oh the poor young man who brought his girlfriend into the shop to look at rings...she obviously knew her diamonds and the older cuts...she talked knowledgable about the gems while the young man went a pale white colour looking at the prices. Outside the shop she spoke tenderly to him...while he shook his head. My turn...I have a keen interest in antiques and I picked out a few items that would accompany something that I already have. Their general attitude towards my husband and I was extremely rude and unhelpful especially when we had questions about a few pieces. We went back twice as I loved a piece they had but after being treated badly a second time we decided not to purchase anything from these negative awful people. Sad as I adored the piece but refuse to give money to dreadful people. We found what we wanted in Woollahra at a far superior antique jeweller.

It's like a treasure hunt to find things that are unique and of value for the best possible price. It's true what they say, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Raffan Kelaher & Thomas does at least one auction per week at their warehouse and sometimes another one at a outside location. This isn't like shopping at Domayne or Harvey Norman (not that I have anything against them), but we're talking real Italian Murano glass, Victorian Gentleman's chairs or an Antique George III Mahogany and Inlaid display cabinet. Make sure you get there early to view the items and know what you are bidding on. You may just find that classic antique typewriter (which is what I'm in search of).

You know what's totally cliche? Having a sneezing attack the minute you walk into an antique shop…read more Guess what happened when I walked through the doors of Towers Antiques & Collectables? Yes, I sent myself into a allergenic fit. Despite this, I weathered the snot storm and stuck around for some browsing. This long, narrow shop is full to the point of bursting with anything and everything old. Whoever did the collecting here didn't seem to have an eye for categorizing. There are old rotary phones atop pealing bookcases, aside bowls of tobacco tins, beside fancy lace gloves, near a bucket of butter knifes. Yes, butter knifes. They also have an old plastic pay phone. And some fantastic vintage postcards. And some 1960s political campaign buttons that are damn near hilarious. If you're impatient, don't shop here. Plain and simple. But it does have a charm associated with the unknown. I made it to the way back of Towers and found a box of vintage fabric scraps. I also discovered some extra cool tin containers from the 50s and 60s. For my hobby of making new stuff out of old stuff, these were both good finds.
