We repeatedly heard that Schafer was expensive. At the Crystal Lake Home Show, we spoke with several contractors, including Dave at the Schafer booth. We immediately felt comfortable with his personality and approach, so we set up a meeting. Dave came to our home, listened to what we wanted, understood our budget, and helped us with the design while keeping our vision in mind. After a few visits, we were able to come to an agreement on the work they would do and a price we were comfortable with. Dave was honest about what could be done within our budget and never pressured us. He listened to our opinions, never minimized what we wanted, and was always available when we had questions. He told us that when they were finished, it would feel like we had a new house--and he was right. Dave introduced us to Eric, who would oversee and do most of the work on the remodel. We were extremely fortunate to have him manage our project. Eric is a master carpenter who is meticulous, does not cut corners, and takes the time to make sure things are done right. His attention to every little detail really showed in the finished project. I can't say enough about him and the quality of his work. Eric also had help from Matt, who did most of the painting and wall work. Again, excellent work. He and Eric worked very well together, kept us involved throughout the process, and made sure we were happy with what they were doing. They also cleaned up at the end of every day, which we really appreciated. Our final thoughts are that we are extremely happy with the results and would use Schafer again for any improvements or repairs we need in the future. They helped us with the design, listened to our ideas, worked collaboratively with us, and then executed our vision. We never felt like they were simply trying to get in and out and move on to the next job. You know the saying, "you get what you pay for." We feel we absolutely got what we paid for--a beautifully remodeled main floor with quality workmanship and attention to detail. There is definitely a "wow factor." We are about a week out from completion, and when we walk in, we still smile and talk about how happy we are with the results. We didn't have to worry about a thing; if an issue came up (as is normal with this scope of work), it was handled right away. Communication was top notch and we couldn't love the final result more! Because of that, we didn't think twice about contracting them when we wanted our garage painted, the floor epoxied, and a cabinet installed in our dining room. If this had been our first experience, it would have been our last. Frankly, we wouldn't even had made it past the quoting process. Communication was terrible and it took far too long (especially compared to the first project that was MUCH more involved). Erik was our carpenter for the kitchen remodel and is not only top notch at his craft, but is such a genuinely nice person that we requested him for this project. Thank goodness because he saved the day numerous times! He also communicated our issues to Jeff, who jumped right on to fixing whatever he could and trying to make everything right. I initially agreed to choose THI for my project due to the good reviews online and recommendation from my designer who thought it would be easier to have THI be my contractor since I was already ordering cabinets and tiles from them. My initial consultation with the owner, Aaron Glenn, was great. He seemed to understand the entire scope of the project but ultimately fell short at time of contract signing. There were significant discrepancies, and I felt like I was gaslit on multiple occasions. This company subcontracts almost all of its work which resulted in major inconsistent quality and communication issues. Major delays occurred due to incorrect supply orders and measurements, and the company (Aaron) showed absolutely no willingness to offer apologies, sympathies or compensation for these setbacks. The most concerning aspect was his unprofessional and unethical behavior regarding a final punch list of incomplete tasks and a remaining balance of $2000 of a total $138,000 project. He demanded payment onsite without providing an updated invoice and even threatened to dismantle my kitchen if immediate payment was not made via credit card. He was assured multiple times that payment would be sent after final work was assessed by my designer, just as I have been doing for the $135,000 of work previously completed but he refused to leave my home. I ultimately filed a police report and am still contemplating legal action as he has threatened to put liens on my property. Based on these experiences, I would NOT recommend Total Home Improvement, LLC. If you decide to still pursue this company, make sure you get everything from the owner in writing during your initial consultation. It is critical you have him sign a delay of work contract (clause dealing with delay in performance) and a waiver of lien so he cannot threaten you as he has done with me. If he refuses, that is a red flag, and you should reconsider this company. Good luck on your renovation project and God speed!

He has replaced cedar siding, made custom railings to replace a couple broken pieces of ours, installed a wet bar, and done a backsplash in our kitchen. The bar installation was particularly challenging because the cabinets has been purchased by the houses previous owner over a decade ago so the appliances that were originally spec'd in were no longer available. Jeff did some magic to piece together extra parts to fill in odd gaps and you would never notice. In the installation he also found that the walls were nowhere near square and he was able to work some magic to make it look perfect regardless. Jeff's prices are very reasonable, especially given the quality of his work.
