I just came back from Tremont St Garage and wanted to write a review immediately because I appreciate good customer service. These guys were recommended by a friend so I was a bit dismayed when I read some of these reviews here. However, I needed immediate work on my car. And my friend is a pretty good source for recommendations. I should mention that my car had just been on a lift at my local service station in VT and the mechanic literally took me under it and pointed out the issues I needed to attend to. He also gave me a quote which I expected would be significantly more in Boston. Fast forward to today... I brought my car to TSG for an estimate. They quoted me a "worst case scenario" quote and mentioned that it would likely be less. They also mentioned some additional work that I already knew had to be done. Having already gotten quotes for both pieces of this puzzle, I knew their "worst case" was actually on par (if not less than) the quotes I got here and in VT. I decided to have them do all of the work. Needless to say, they did a great job AND came in more than $150 under budget! The initial job was actually less than the VT quote! I would highly recommend these guys and plan to bring my car here for any work it needs. It's also worth noting that when i dropped my car off in the morning, they dropped me off at the train station so I could get to work. Nothing but good things to say about this business! read more

didn't have an appointment but my car was making a crazy racket, like the front end was going to fall off. I had taken it into the vw dealership the prior week due to the noise which hadn't been so bad at that time. I don't think they put the car up on the lift but they gave me a list of front end work to the tune of 1500. When it worsened I drove it into tremint street garage since I live down the street. Bruce the owner and Jack were both very nice especially given I didn't have an apptmt and had never been into the shop before. Bruce came out and drive the car and suggested it probably was not safe to be driving so i left the car there. They charge a diagnostic fee (as did the dealership and their diagnostic turned out to be totally wrong). The next morning Bruce called and explained what he found. The stabilizer had broken apart from the frame. Bruce explained how he would repair it, and even had bolts machined to make it secure longterm. This car has less than 50k and this seemed to be unusual. Next day my car was ready. No other repairs came up and the bill was very reasonable. I appreciate Bruce going out of his way to make this repair permanent. The car drives beautifully and almost feels like a brand new car. As a woman, and as someone who knows nothing about cars, it's anxiety provoking to deal with automotive repairs. I can wholeheartedly recommend Bruce and Tremont Street Garage and am confident you'll be treated you'll receive good service for a fair price. read more

Not being from the area, had no idea who the reliable mechanics were. Busted 2 tires over a pothole and ended up paying $700 for these guys to replace them. They charged $200 / tire when costco which sells the same exact tires for $70 each with lifetime rotation and repair. They refused to allow me to get the tires from elsewhere and falsely claimed even though they were the "same" tires, they had access to the pick of the tires and costco sold the bottom of the barrel stuff. Yeah right... What can yo do though when you don't have access to a car to even drive and shop around? You can't exactly leave your car on the side of the road. They also refused to have me stay at the shop while they did the estimates and the repair. How the hell do you trust these guys? When I drove the car home, I noticed some of the body panels looked funny. Drove it right back and they blamed the damage on the tow truck for which they had no responsibility for...they were the ones who called the tow truck. Getting work done on the automobile is always a hassle, but these guys make it easy for us. Gary and the crew have done an excellent job keeping our 2 beaters on the road. I've had brakes done, sensors fixed, oil changes, and tire rotations and balances. They have always been way under what the dealer would charge me. They'll also go and take your car to get inspected for you for no extra charge. Sounds good to me! read more

I just had my 2013 Honda Fit in for routine maintenance and it runs like a brand new car. Having read the reviews for this place, I was worries but when I realized the reviews were old and the recent reviews were good, I figured it was worth the try. (Disclosure my Fiance's Dad is VW mechanic, therefor if they messed up I would know exactly why and how). I was pleasantly surprised, this place was great! They have many many awards on their walls, the office was clean and they were wicked prompt. I honestly enjoyed the experience, the staff and the shop. AC repair beware... double plus is the name of Tremont's game! Consistent INCONSISTENCY with the pricing should have been my steer clear, but I went for the convenience of location. Called these guys for a estimate over the phone that Dave said would be about 135 to 160, for AC check and recharge. OK.. what I expected. Called the day before the appointment with them, and was told by Bruce, more like 160 to 180? Spoke with Bruce directly the morning of the appointment before the work began and was told a third price that would be about 180 to 230.. depending on the line test. (Line test was quoted from as little as 50, to as much as 130). Bottom line after work was completed, charged 298!!! Had charges for "parts" of over 100 dollars when I didn't get any new parts added to the car, and Bruce topped it off by telling me he did me a favor and only charged 50 for the line test. That's probably the price of the line test! Convenient location it was..yes... inconsistent and overpriced... double yes! read more

In short: The customer service I received from the owner, Bruce, was horrendous and his remarkable ineptitude (described below) was stunning. AAA towed my 87 Mercedes here (as per their recommendation) after the alternator failed. From the start Bruce had a cold and patronizing demeanor. He wanted to charge me $75 to attach a voltmeter to the battery and alternator. I said the man from AAA had just done that, and Bruce insulted the driver by saying something like, "What does a tow truck driver know? He has no education." If that condescension isn't enough to turn you away from this garage, the quote to replace my alternator was $725 and Bruce said they would NOT GUARANTEE THE WORK. My mechanic (unfortunately 50 miles away) had quoted me a total of $250 to replace the alternator and belt. That's $475 cheaper than the Tremont St. Garage. In the end, I bought a $106 alternator and $21 belt from the auto parts store, and replaced both with my brother (something we had never done before) in TWO hours. My car (which has been maintained meticulously) is now running perfectly. The rest of the story: Before I left the garage I confronted Bruce about his treatment of the AAA driver and his outrageous quote. He offered no apology and defended his insult toward the driver. Bruce also demonstrated his complete lack of mechanical knowledge by saying that my replacing the alternator would not fix the problem with the charging system. The alternator's job is literally to charge the battery of the car (smh). Unfortunately, he continued spewing his incompetence by saying that alternators on Mercedes 190Es last forever. I think that my thirty-year-old alternator that ran for 160,000 miles had a fine life and deserved to rest. SMH again. Lastly, a car was parked behind mine so I couldn't leave the premises until I paid a $35 overnight fee that was not mentioned when I brought it in for the quote. I disputed the charge with my credit card company, and received a refund. Please do not get screwed by these people! read more

It's always tough getting a repair shop that you can feel good about. I felt good about Tremont st garage for a while. They communicate well, are very friendly and very thorough. I took my two cars (eight and ten years old) to Tremont for regular maintenance and was often surprised with the long list of things they identified that was wrong with my cars. Often each thing was described as "dangerous" things that needed to be fixed right away. I felt pressured to fix more than I had to. Finally after having some issues with my suspension and being told it would cost more than $1000 to fix, I took the car to another shop (wel out of my way) that I trusted and they couldn't believe the quote I was given. They did the work for less than $400 and they didnt waste my time with a giant list of other things that were wrong. read more

Bruce had a garage full of repairs; he pulled my car in and found the problem, ordered the part, and fixed my car. If I lived in or near Melrose, this is where I would go. Absolute garbage mechanics. Brought my car in for a noise I heard in engine. Calls me back with $1000 worth of work. I said okay fix everything. Go to pick up car and STILL HAVE NOISE. i agree with dana's review. i took my old car here for several years, and they did well by me for a while. they also have a few loaner cars, which is helpful if you need to leave the car for any amount of time. however, while the work that i did have done was good, there was always the dreaded 'well, while we were in there, we also found....' call. almost invariably, the issues were pitched as critical to fix - until i asked them to explain what the issues were, and then it turned out to be an upsell. then i was in an accident, and my car was rear-ended. i decided to replace it, picked out a used car, and took the car to Tremont to get their opinion. i was told that it would take a huge amount of money to get the car to pass inspection, and that i should buy back my old (totalled) car because they could repair that for less. key point - they had not seen the damage to the old car. bought the car anyway, and the car passed inspection - without having any work done. six months, one timing belt, and one oil change later, my new, inspected car is just fine. (i opted to do the timing belt because of the miles on the car - and got it done for quite a bit less than this place quoted me.) read more

I had been very happy with Tremont Street Garage for two years and I do think that they do a quality job. However, my last experience with them left a not great feeling. I brought my car in for an oil change and to get a quote for repairing my side view mirror. The quote that they gave me seemed really high, but I was more annoyed with the fact that they tried to "up-sell" me on having my headlights cleaned, this new service they were pushing. Without asking me, they worked that price into the quote i was given and I got a lecture on why it was important...although it was unrelated to the current issue I was having. I tried out another area garage and was very pleasantly surprised by the price and the quality of work. The price of the part and the labor was half of what Tremont quoted me, they fixed it in 15 minutes and they didn't try to sell me anything. read more

My poor old jeep needed a shocks / bushings /steering / alignment overhaul on top of an about to break serpentine belt (which I didn't even know about). They saved me over $300 with parts and labor on top of giving the Jeep a full once over to make sure everything was set. On time and under budget...who ever hears things like that from their mechanic! Early / late drop off available. Was honest about the condition of the car and what needed to be done, didn't sugar coat it OR try to scare me. I feel much safe driving the jeep now and will be a return customer (well hopefully not too soon). read more

It had been years since I was last brought my car to this shop and now I know why. I was just fleeced out of $420 for essentially having them disconnect a hood latch alarm sensor. It most likely would have been closer to $700 if I had gone with the solution they suggested of replacing the hood latch with a used one. The issue started with the alarm going off randomly in our Acura MDX. AAA towed it here and Bruce apparently spent hours "diagnosing" the issue but not actually fixing it, for a charge of $240. We brought the car back when the alarm started going off again a few days later, and after more diagnosis Bruce finally figured out it was the hood latch and suggested spending another $400 to replace it with a used one to save money! I asked if he could just disconnect the sensor but Bruce could feel the easy $400 slipping from his fingers so he said more "diagnosis" would be needed. The charge for disconnecting the sensor and additional "diagnosis" was $180. Steer clear of this place and the blowhard owner who likes to spend more time reminding you of his qualifications than actually fixing cars! read more

I've taken my car here three times and I will for sure never be going back. The most recent time my muffler had rusted off of my car, my worst case scenario was the exhaust system would also be damaged (it was). I was quoted $1300 at most but they thought "it would definitely be lower than that," it wasn't. When I picked up my car I realized the AC wasn't working, it was just blowing hot air, and it DEFINITELY worked before I took it in for the muffler repair. Can't be sure if it was some super crazy coincidence that it stopped working the minute I picked it up or if it was something sketchy. So I took it back in to check what was wrong with the AC, my compressor wasn't working anymore. I was quoted $1575. I have a 2006 honda civic, an air compressor for my car costs $200. I picked my car up, after paying $135 for a diagnosis, and brought it somewhere else and had the AC and a belt that needed replacing, that Tremont St failed to tell me about, for $610. Point is this place wants to scam you out of money, and you should 100% steer clear. read more

Took my car in for an Automatic Braking System malfunction, covered by the extended warranty I had purchased. We were visiting relatives and 1500 miles from home. Friends of our relatives recommended Tremont St. Garage. In addition to the brake work, I was charged $160 (not covered by the warranty) for the 'diagnostics' required. Bruce also called me with an $850 laundry list of preventive maintenance, etc. that the car 'needed'. I declined. The warranty covered $250 and I had to pay another $280. When I got home I found the top/center brake light assembly hanging by the wires. The screws were missing. The trim cap on the rear window wiper was missing and that stuck out like a sore thumb. Bruce admitted that the brake light was their error and found the missing screws He claimed no responsibility for the trim cap. You can do better than this place. I won't be back. read more

I have brought my cars to Bruce and his team for over 10 years now, and must say this review is long overdue. The 3 things I want in a mechanic: honest assessment of the problem, fair price, prompt and courteous service. I get all that and more here. They always call with an estimate and get my approval before doing the work, and inevitably the final cost is at or below the estimate. They document everything very well, making it easy to look up repair history and know when the car is due for maintenance. My current car has 145k miles on it, and is running well. I had a flat tire the day before Thanksgiving, when they were swamped, and not only did they fit me in, but they had gone out and bought the new tire before I even arrived with the tow truck. This guy is a crook. Every time we'd go in, something else would mysteriously break in a week. They would make it seem like the car was unsafe to drive and needed a major overhaul if a map light was out. Then we found out that we were being charged more, WAY MORE, than even what the dealer was charging. How this place is AAA approved is beyond me. read more

I had an awful experience with this place. I brought my car in to get my ac fixed (my mechanic doesn't do ac). They called me back a few hours later with a huge list of problems with my car. Along with fixing the ac (they quoted $1300 to get it fixed) the total they quoted me was $2600. I obviously could not pay that but they insisted I had to fix these problems and they called me multiple times. I told them not to fix anything and I would come pick up my car. They charged me $160 just to look at the car. When I brought it to my mechanic the only he could find wrong with the car was that it needed an oil change and the filters replaced which cost me about $50. When I did get the ac fixed it cost me $500. I told a few people in the Melrose area about my experience and most people heard of similiar experiences and overcharging. Major rip off. My brake line broke and per AAAs recommendation, I had my car towed to this garage. Well, the owner calls me and gives me a quote for $550 for a brake line and a "brake pad cleaning" for the rear. Then he proceeds to list out 6 other items I should take are of all for a whopping $1,600. Things included minuscule task like refilling oil and adding that a pinion seal. My car is a 2001 jeep and I've done a ton of work to it already. Including replacing the brake line and pinion seal. I realize I'm going to get ripped off and there's nothing I can do because at this point I've already missed two days of work and need my car. Well long story short, I tell him just do the brake line. He charges me $475! I've had this don't for $200 before and all online quotes were $200. I told home all this at the shop and he goes "well was it the right one or the left one that you had repaired before". Mega rip off and a cold demeanor about doing it. I've never written a review here before, but these jerks drove me to it. Over the summer, my car wouldn't start. It really seemed to be the battery because it started after jumping it. However, it was summer and the car isn't old, so I thought it was unusual that the battery would randomly stop working. So I researched a local garage (having just moved here), and found out this place is AAA approved and called them. They wanted me to have it towed in, I said that I could just jump it and drive it there (I had driven home 30 miles the night before after getting a jump). They said no way, it has to be towed here. Fine, so I call AAA, the tow truck guy shows up and says they can't get in on the truck without starting it, so he jumps it, puts it on the truck and tows it there. I talked to the mechanic and said I really think I just need a new battery, he argues and says they need to do a whole diagnostic work-up to check, fine. 6 hours later, he says, ok, you need a new battery and it's going to be $300, and oh yeah, we found 10 other things wrong with your car and the total will be $1000. What??!! (I have a newish honda civic!) I told him I only want a battery and I could go to Sears and get a battery for $100. He argued that this battery is so superior, etc..., So I gave in and agreed to the battery which he was magically able to reduce to $200ish. When I arrived to pay, they were SO pushy and kept telling me they strongly recommend all the services (brake flush, transmission flush, on and on), I felt like I was at one of those commercial oil change places. I love these guys! I've been going to them for several years now and they are just fantastic! Bruce, the owner, may look like a gruff and tough guy but he is a sweetheart to the core. He genuinely loves what he does but more so, he cares about the work that is done and about his customers. He and the rest of the crew at Tremont have been very helpful and very kind to me over the years, helping when I've called with silly questions (and patiently explaining things to me), showing me how to accurately check my tire pressure, and generally taking good care of me and my car. After I was in an accident last year, I immediately called Bruce for a referral for where to go to get the body repair. I also brought my car right in to him to have him look it over (even tho a garage did it near the scene of the accident) and being just before Thanksgiving, he made sure that my car was safe for my 4 hour drive to my parents. Recently being out of work, Bruce has even worked with me on my final bill, trying to keep it within an amount I could afford and letting me know what items that needed work done could wait (safely) until I could afford more extensive work. If I were to move out of town, I would drive to Melrose to have Tremont St Garage work on it any time. I would not trust my car with anyone other than these guys. They are fantastic!! read more

Very experienced repair shop ,they fixed my tahoe the right way ,after dealing with other local repair shops and getting my truck fixed and having to go back numerous times for the same problem that was suppose to be fixed right the first time I gave this garage a try and they where professional and knew how to diagnose and fix my truck without having to go back a second time Bruce the owner was very helpfull explaining to me what was wrong with my truck and the repairs that where done . My car was towed in due to a transmission failure. I met with the owner Bruce and He assured me that I was in good hands because he was a master Mechanic and had access to many suppliers that could get the correct parts for my car at the right price. Bruce told me that he almost never exceeds his repair estimates. Bruce told me that he would call me with an estimate first thing in the morning. True to his word, Bruce called me early in the morning and told me that my transmission cooling lines had failed and that it would cost $1225.00 to replace them. When I asked him why it was $1225.00 I was told that the engine had to be lifted to access the cooling lines and that filling the transmission with fluid was a complicated process. I researched the service work through repair pal which uses National and regional data to ensure fair price estimates and found that the average cost to replace two cooling lines is between $327.00 and $453.00. I also validated repair pal's quote with a transmission shop that is close to my home town. Armed with this information, I called Bruce back and told him to stop working on my car and made arrangements to have it towed to a local facility close to my house. The story doesn't end here. When I arrived at the Tremont Street garage and informed them that I was taking my car to another shop, I was told in no uncertain terms that my car was apart, still on the lift, and wouldn't be ready for an hour because they still had to figure out the bill. I called the towing company and delayed the pickup for an hour to accommodate Tremont St Garage. Tremont St Garage charged me $160.00 to tell me that my transmission cooling lines had failed. That's what I call being serviced!! I confronted Bruce the owner and was told that the charge was accurate. I then asked what was done and was told that they put the car on the lift, removed an undercarriage pan and worked on a parts order. I then asked him how he came up with his original estimate of $1225.00 and asked what type of guide he used. He told me that he used a national guide. When I showed him the quote from Repair Pal he told me that Boston had the highest labor rates in the nation and that's why his price was so high. Now I know why he never exceeds his repair estimates!! They are almost 3 X the national average!! read more

Crooked...all the way! Dad's, who is 88, wanted an oil change and told them to make sure all else is ok. Dad wants to make sure everything is fine because he's concerned about driving Mom around who is handicapped. So Dad asked to let him know if there's something that needs to be done and...$1200 later there's a list of things done that Dad did not need ESPECIALLY National Ovations tires that cost $745 plus a $95 alignment. Being a senior person he neglected to tell the garage what kind of tires he wanted and was not asked either and was not told the price of tires up front. Their website states they use "top brands only". National Ovations is far from a top brand or a well known one. I think we have FALSE ADVERTISING in this case. Not to mention $180 for an AC Delco battery. I truly don't know what this guy is thinking. After being told my Dad would never return to him for work, Bruce offered me a $100 credit towards future oil changes only. I requested a refund (not any credit) on the tires or to at least give him what he paid for, or lower the price to reflect what brand he got and the answer was a flat NO. Please, you and the seniors in your life, think twice about going to this company for any work. They are rip off artists and very good ones at that. He even has AAA fooled. By the way, where's the AAA discount? None offered here. When I spoke to the AAA rep, he said they didn't have to offer AAA discounts. Well, isn't that why people use AAA because of their reputation and discounts? Their name is synonymous with discounts. According to online reviews, $1,000 seems to be the magic number for Tremont Street Garage. People bring their cars in for minor repairs and voila, all of a sudden their cars are falling apart, regardless of the age of your vehicle, in need of costly repairs. For the heck of it, we also did some checking around with friends and family and we were surprised to find many people have had dealings with them, the story is always the same. Went there once...won't go back. I was surprised at the amount of people that have had negative dealings with this garage. In addition, I also got quotes/interesting comments, on this bill from several local garages. Here are only a couple of quotes and comments as most would not fit in this review. Re: Battery: Called ACDelco and they could not find the 16286 Delco 6 year battery part number on receipt. Called Sears Auto ...their top of the line 60 month Die Hard Gold battery is $137.78 installed. When I told the salesman the Tremont St. price his comment was "Good Lord this is not ok". Re: Alignment: Sears charges $79.99 and are always offering specials. Re: Tires: Tires-easy.com. Tires and shipping = $96.40 plus shipping $46.74 = $431.60 (only company I could find selling these tires). Sears salesman seen National Ovation tires twice in 5 years. Hogan Tire said National Ovation tires are middle to low end tires. Middle to low end tires non-branded $86.90 each=$453.88 total installed with tax. Middle end tires which are Bridgestone are $165.00 each=$615.00 total including mounting balancing and tax. High end Michelins total $670.63 installed with mounting balancing and tax. Alignments $89.95 less $30.00 with tire purchase=$59.95. Contacted AAA dealer, never heard of National Ovation tires, AAA approved offers 5% discount. I sent Tremont St. Garage return receipt/certified letter immediately after Dad receiving this bill, acknowlegement never received. Contacted AAA rep, Ken, offered me no satisfaction at all. As a matter of fact, he didn't see anything wrong with these costs and he did speak with Bruce, Tremont Garage and that was the end of it. Some ignorant, wise comments "oh, I can buy those at Bennies". ?? Being a very upsetting situation for Dad, his rudeness was uncalled for. I hope they replace him with someone who is truly interested in resolving customer issues, Ken is not the man for this job. Not the response I wanted or expected, so I ended that conversation quickly,he was wasting my time. I escalated issue to his boss, John, Member Relations, very nice man. The end result was a substantial payment to my Dad to make up for several of the overcharges on his bill. I was promised the AAA reps attitude would be addressed along with the Tremont St. Garage bill. John will investigate and hopefully remove this garage as a AAA dealer as should have been done ages ago. They are an extremely poor representation of AAA.As far as I'm concerned this is not the end. Dad put his full faith and trust in Tremont Street and owner, Bruce Turnbull, and was clearly taken advantage of. He was charged full retail plus for the tires, alignment, and battery. Dad said he couldn't understand why when Bruce dropped off the car he was in a big hurry and did not take time to explain what was done. He hurriedly took off after Dad signed the receipt. I understand these individuals have been in business for years and allegedly have a "aaa" rating. This must change. All the bad reviews you read are more than accurate. All the fair ones just need to go in one more time with open ears and eyes. They "fixed" my mothers A/C for $1440 in August on 2011. She never drove the car again and passed away in January. I inherited her gem and this summer the A/C did not work. I took to my mechanic who diagnosed it as faulty compressor. Bruce demanded I bring it back for diagnosis and IF he agreed and IF the part was covered by warranty he would only charge for labor (4-5 hours at $100 an hour). I told him it was inconvenient for me to drive two round trips from Randolph to hope for the best. I asked for the part number and cost (yes they never record this on receipts but you will get a long detailed novel on every step they took from opening hood to closing hood) and who the vendor was so my mechanic could take care of it for less than one hour labor at $65 an hour. BRUCE REFUSED TO GIVE ANY OF THIS INFORMATION. I said I would rather have the whole job redone correctly and pay my guys than to spend any time with him or give him $10 bucks. The result: for less than half of what he was going to charge just for labor, I have cold air and defroster that works. The vendors all told my mechanic that they do not stock that particular compressor because it is dirt cheap--like going to Family Dollar for a refrigerator, and they were always get returns and complaints for defects. So BRUCE would have used the same shoddy part and run out any warranty. Obviously they buy the cheapest and charge you what a dealer would for top of the line. My car is 1998. They are nasty when cornered. We tried to tell my mother not to let these guys near her car because we all had bad experiences with them, but she liked that they picked it up and dropped it off for her. THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A FRAIL AND TRUSTING SENIOR CITIZEN. Over 25 years ago I went in because of a noise in another car. BRUCE quickly told me I needed a ($1600) transmission. When I got a second opinion all I needed was a tune up ($90). He may know how to hold a flashlight and maybe hires half decent mechanics BUT he is a CROOK. If you don't accept his upsell he will get you in another way. And you will never reveal where he buys the parts for YOUR car that YOU PAY FOR. GO ANYWHERE ELSE. read more
