Damien came today to trim our 40 ft. jacaranda, (we scheduled 2 weeks in advance, by text) and coincidentally Edison knocked on my door yesterday wanting to cut it back from some power lines in our back yard. Damien was so glad I didn't let them, since they would just hack off limbs to clear the wires and not trim what's best for the tree. He does such a wonderful job, our tree has now not only cleared the power lines and over our roof line, but is asthetically beautiful and balanced. It will be stunning come April when it blooms those beautiful purple buds! His team also cleans up after they are done, our yard looks great too. Damian and crew did a truly wonderful job in transforming several 50 foot Hollywood junipers on either side of our front yard. These junipers were planted decades ago, well before we bought our home, and they'd become overgrown, shedding like crazy on not just our yard, but also on both our neighbors' property. We love our neighbors and when one of them pointed out recently the mess that was dropping on their lawn from our trees, I called around for estimates. Damian came by and took the time to give me detailed recommendations on how to prune back without harming the junipers. Long story short-they went from looking like shaggy, hulking monstrosities to absolutely stunning Monterey Pine-like beauties. While not cheap (tree work never is, especially with licensed pros like Damian) his price was more than competitive. And now-I think the house and yard got a boost in curb appeal! I have three large trees I need to have trimmed. Called Tree Surfers based on the excellent reviews. The voicemail message said if the mailbox was full, to text (probably should have been a red flag - are they not checking voicemails?). I was lucky and the mailbox wasn't full, so I left a message. I didn't get a call back that day or the morning of the next day (probably another red flag). However, I went ahead and called again at about 2:00 in the afternoon, left another message, and also sent a text asking to set up a time for a quote. Finally got a response via text later in the day (I'm guessing from Damian based on the other reviews, but I never got his name) and we set up an appointment for the next day at 4:45 for him to come give me a quote. I have about a half hour commute, and I left work early to make it home in time to meet him. At 5:00 no one had shown up yet, so I sent a text asking if he is coming. No response. Finally at 5:25 I got a text saying that he was late on his last job and asking if we could we meet tomorrow instead. I get that things happen and jobs can run late. I'm generally pretty understanding about that kind of thing, but how about sending me a text at 4:00 telling me that? Surely you'd know by then that you aren't going to make the appointment. However, waiting until 40 minutes after the scheduled appointment to say anything just shows that he has no respect for other people's time. He might be a good tree trimmer, I don't know, but the customer service I experienced while trying to get a quote was terrible. read more

I had a complicate situation where a large dead pine was squeezed in between a house and the neighbor's fence. I did my due diligence and called a number of companies I found on Yelp: Nimble Tree Care claimed to be too busy, Mesa Tree wouldn't return my calls, and Branch Out Tree Care actually came out to do the job and backed out last minute. Luckily I ended up going with the Tree Surfers who were recommended by a friend. They were easy to get a hold of and worked very efficiently at a reasonable price. Damian was very nice and I expected to have a good experience. Unfortunately i did not have a great experience. I hired him to trim some trees, remove and stump grind a few hedges etc. He trimmed everything and left it in the yard. Didn't come back to chip and remove the trimmings for months. (and then wanted to charge more to chip them after I had to drag all them to the front as he didn't) stated his stump grinder was broke and after pestering him had a friend come do it that didn't know where all the stumps were as he didn't to the trim work. Took 2 months to complete the jib and still didn't get all the stumps and when I pointed them out he stated he couldn't reach them after he said he would do them in the beginning. read more

Unfortunately, my absentee neighbors hired this person, not me, to trim their tree the past 3 times with 1-2 year intervals. This guy, head-of-the crew or owner (?), is unprofessional, immature and downright abusive - repeatedly, each visit, which goes over several days. He has never extended the professional courtesy of prior warning to my other neighbor or me that he will be here and that his work will be affecting us. This is how i found out he was even here this last visit: I heard loud smashing sounds in my back yard, went out there to see its source and was verbally attacked by this owner (?) with him screaming abusively at me to get out of the way, when i already was out of the way. A normal person would have had a conversation -- WITHOUT the abuse. You know, be normal. The second day: early morning I noticed one of the crew in my yard in the process of removing branches. There was no other visible or audio evidence as to where the others were. It looked like they had just arrived, and that it was safe to go outside. Also, i had not been given any notice as to there being a safety problem with me being in my own yard. Despite this, i stood well under the awning to speak to the crew member, telling him that yesterday when i drove away from my property i noticed that the crew was standing in the thick cloud of debris forced into the air by the owner (?) using a leaf blower. I, politely and with a good heart, told this crew member that they should wear a mask, because that cloud debris had toxic particles in it from the on-going fires and was dangerous to breath into lungs, like they did. He listened, appreciated my words, saying he would wear a mask. Suddenly, out of nowhere i heard a voice, I had no idea who it was or from whence it came. It asked me to step from under the awning and stand out in the open. I did so and saw the owner (?) next door, up the tree, apparently already working. Seeing that it was this abusive guy, i should have walked away, because he launched into yet another abusive tirade, telling me that i was endangering his operation and myself, threatening that he would not clean up the huge mess [branches, 200 immature avocados, leaves] if i did not immediately 'get back' into my house. Now, this was not said with any professionalism, but with the viciousness of a damaged person. Totally unnecessary. This guy's emotional state reminds me of a narcissistic, entrenched drug addict who enjoys inflicting abuse. If he truly cared for my safety i would received prior notice that his work area that morning would encompass my yard AND if he was a decent guy he would not be abusive. To put it a different way, contact with this guy has been like this: Someone hidden in the shadows steps out to hit you in the head with a baseball bat. read more

Just terrible! About 2 yrs ago, they came out to trim my huge avocado (planted in the '40's). I didn't get the idea that most of them knew what they were doing. I had told them the avocados were too small and would not ripen on their own, yet when I came home from work they had about 300 up against my garage. He told me not to bother them because they had spent a lot of time "picking them" and he would come back with a trailer to pick them up the next day. I told him he wouldn't. I told him they were ruined and would not ripen. I gave them to my neighbors, but they were ruined. He had said he had found a squirrel's nest and a bird's nest in the tree. I called several times over the next few days to ask if the nests were ok. He never returned my calls until I got angry and demanded a call out of courtesy. The other thing that seemed a little sketchy, was that he wanted the check written out to him personally, which means to me that he didn't want to pay taxes on it. Damien did a magnificent job fine pruning as well as lowering the crown on 7 trees today-melaleucas, jacaranda, liquid amber, and naked coral. I called him based on Yelp recommendations. His price was quite reasonable/competitive and his suggestions on pruning each tree was exactly what I desired. I don't like trees that are "topped" or look butchered. Damien, with 16 years experience cutting trees, climbs into the tree and makes all the cuts, leaving an aesthetically pleasing, natural result. He is conscientious, professional, and affable. Our property looks fantastic. Damian and his crew showed so much care to avoid bird nests in the trees.
