When I got there, I clicked my check-in link that was sent earlier and filled out the form I needed. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and I was taken back right at my scheduled time. The process was quick and I was out of there in less than 15 minutes. The only thing I'd change would be to give the option to fill the forms at home in a pdf and print them to bring alone, because my handwriting is awful. This is the third or forth time I've gone to the DPS Driver's License office and it's always been easy. A big contrast to earlier in my life dealing with motor vehicle offices in MD, NJ, and NY.

I chose this location because it's close to my workplace and I wanted to squeeze in my driver's…read morelicense renewal during lunch. Honestly, I was expecting the worst after hearing countless horror stories from friends and coworkers. So, I came prepared--booked my appointment online well before my birthday to avoid any delays. It ended up taking me longer to drive there than to complete the renewal itself. I was in and out in five minutes! P.S. DPS no longer accepts walk‑ins, so be sure to book an appointment online or you'll be turned away.

Sometimes, you just have to wonder how long a new place will last. I'm first to appreciate what…read morethey've done here, but I'll be really surprised if they're around a month from now. At the Wednesday lunch when I was here, there were far more staff than customers. Perhaps it's just the newness of the place. Once inside, it's a huge space divided into three sections, like a giant "U." The host chose which side of the U to direct me to, and the other two sides seemed far away. The bad news is anyone next to you on your side will feel pretty darn close, but it's not that uncomfortable or prying. If you hate those hip & cool electronic menus, you're out of luck, because that's what they have here. You have the option of doing a quick one-click prix fixe entry, but c'mon - half the fun is perusing those odd entrées you've never heard of before. I will tell you if you're a longtime Austinite, much of the vast City Charcutèrie selections will seem pretty familiar. I don't know - I could argue the more things change, the more they're alike, and places like El Bistro de las Elecciones just come and go. But then again, what's the alternative? To not even give it a shot and then whine about it? Pffft, that's too easy. Sometimes, what we get is as good as it gets. ******************** (Editor's note: Errol M. did early voting today at Highland Mall, and then submitted this review. We're slightly concerned he may be off his meds.)

We visited El Bistro de Las Elecciones, located within Highland Mall, on a Friday evening. I…read morecalled ahead to try and get a reservation for the five of us, but yeah, it's one of those new-fangled trendy places that thinks it's a privilege for you to go to. So you just have to check in at the door and wait your turn. Parking is plentiful, on the southwest side of the mall, facing Airport Blvd. Look for the door with cars near it. I came in on the MetroRail train, and it was a short walk across Airport and the mall parking lot. When I arrived, I looked nearby to see if I could find a place that serves Lone Star, or perhaps organic bluebonnet-infused berry ice cream to kill time, but alas all I saw was an Avon Store. Wait... An Avon store? What the...? Check-in was relatively easy. The bulk of us just used our driver's licences. One used a utility bill and her honest face. And really, there wasn't a wait. Which is why to come here instead of waiting for General Election day on November 6th. Like a previous reviewer, I'm not a big fan of long/shared community tables, and the voting machines were all in a row along the wall. The glory days of the curtained booths are long gone. If it had been crowded, it would have been a little uncomfortable with how close things are. I even left a gap between me and my wife when I chose my machine. And where's my touch screen? C'mon! You've lost a star. Extended hours until they close. 7am-9pm now through November 2 for all your Travis County voting needs. Then you'll have to fight the lines on Tuesday, after you figure out where your real voting precinct is. Anyway, we did our civic duty, and it was mostly painless. And I got a free sticker! El Bistro, you are A-OK with me!

Still it sucks to see this going away. We came in, bought some books and browed a bit. They place had a fair amount of people, still quite a few books, music, and movies. I couldn't find much I was intersteied in but Shana did and even found me a book or two. The bathroom is weird, it is around a corner that looks like you are not allowed to go to and there is a key on a hanger that you take in with you, you don't need to unlock the door and I am not sure it even locks. If the key is missing that is how you know the bathroom has someone in it, there is a small hook on the inside to hang the key while you are in the restroom. So you have to hope people notice it is gone and you have to hope everyone puts the key back. But they are clean and they have a sign in the bathroom that the front desk can supply you with pads if needed. The one misstep here was the guy running the front desk, he was not super friendly, I heard his reaction to a lady gushing about how great the place was and how many books she found for such a good price, some were gifts and he could care less. He wasn't rude but he was doing that thing where you just nod and say uh huh. I also heard him later say he was from another branch of the library, I don't know which but I hope we don't run into him again. We got something like 7 or 8 books for 9 bucks which is fantastic. He checked us out fast, as he had better things to do and we headed out.

Let me start with - it's not a big place, and the selection isn't huge so it's not terribly likely you'll find something very specific, much less a popular title. However, it's a nice concept. They sell retired library books for VERY cheap, so if you're list looking for a new book in general, this is actually a pretty decent spot to get some and save money. They have a small lot out front but I had no trouble finding parking. The staff there were really friendly and helpful; they don't have a catalog because of all the turnover but they do have things arranged by genre so they could point me toward where I might find the book I was looking for.
