Our first stop was a different travel agency and they were unable to book what he wanted. Not to mention, they made it sound unsafe for him to travel alone. So we went to Edgerton Travel and spoke to Jessica. OMG! She was planning on traveling to Japan the week before my son was. She was quick to put my mind at ease. She booked a non-stop flight from Chicago to Japan and back home and used a tour company with whom my son could contact if the need arose. She made sure he was booked in hotels with good ratings and included train passes for his travel around Japan. My son made some changes to the proposed travel itinerary and she was happy to oblige. When she was all finished, she presented him with a beautiful itinerary which had hotel information, tourist attractions and how to get to each area. She was even kind enough to give me a copy as well. I have to mention the 1st full day my son was in Japan, staying in Tokyo, a level 3 typhoon hit. He was fine, but it worried me. During my son's last few days, he wanted to stay a little longer in one area than was planned. Jessica helped him make the changes to his hotel stays. Upon his flight back, Jessica even sent me a personal message to let me know that his flight was coming in on time. What travel agent does all this? JESSICA AT EDGERTON TRAVEL DOES!!!! First trip was a scary disaster as the driver was very inept at using the lift, refused to lock chair wheels, etc. Luckily had an aide who intervened and kept me from plunging off of the lift several times. Second trip, called day ahead to make sure appropriate bus and driver would be available. Chair lift did not work, second bus sent, lift did not work, and third bus the same! Everyone waiting and transferring busses in very cold weather. Again, luckily, had an aide with me who had to lift me into owners vehicle for round-trip. Not what I paid two tickets for. Do not book a bus trip if you are in a wheelchair!, no refund.

Also a switch was made on a hotel from a 4 star we were promised and paid for to a 2 star hostel type hotel. I was traveling alone and there was no room for me. The tour bus driver gave up his room so I could have a place to stay. On the last night a different hotel did not have a room for me. Inge's answer for that was for me to take the keys with someone else's name on it. really? Seriously? A woman alone advised to use the room keys assigned to another person!? She never lifted a finger to do anything about the room mixup, it was addressed by the cie tour guide while she had drinks and dinner.

Making a trip by plane for the first time in over 20 years wasn't as bad as I thought thanks to South Bend Airport. Headed to Punta Gorda, a 2ish hour plane ride, we used this location to get there. Things were quick and no issues. We had some extra time before heading off so we got the chance to look around, grab a snack and even sit for a bit before take off. Not a lot of food options, which isn't too surprising for such a small airport, and that was truly the big downside. The only restaurants I saw were Bar Fly and the Chocolate Cafe, both of which were decent. If you're needing food before a flight it's a good spot to grab a quick bite.

The counter person was so unfriendly and borderline rude to me, no one was in the branch but me and its 3+ hours until closing time... so it's not like I snuck in at the last moment. I agree with the other customer's feedback of giving this branch 1 star. I never receive poor service in any other AAA branch. If you aren't happy at AAA, get a new job, but do all of us a favor, don't appy for customer service positions.

I went there to get my IDL (international drivers license) and the person was not in....I needed it ASAP because I had an unexpected business trip the next day- 18 hours notice. So they sent me to the one in Merrillville. I went there and their ink they use to mark the edges of the photo once attached wouldn't dry and smeared off the photo. Thusly, it looked like someone removed the original photo and placed a new one....those idiots couldn't figure out why their ink was not working (gee- maybe because it was wet ink and not dry ink...duh). Anyway, I had already paid for it and they (still in Merrillville) couldn't figure out how to give me a refund because the IDL books are tracked unlike the photos which are not. Since they couldn't complete my request they called the Mishawaka branch to see if the only person in the branch who can glue a photo in a paper book and stamp it (the IDL) was back in but they closed in 90mins.....no apologies, no ensuring if I sped there she would stay to accommodate me if I was late....I made it with a few minutes to spare. She was rude, condescending, and didn't even offer to give me a break on the cost because of how much they suck and the fact only ONE person in the office can do this simple job a one armed blind monkey could do. I would NEVER go back to Mishawaka AAA and I would never join AAA based upon that experience. What a joke. With gas and tolls- not to mention blowing 5 hours of a day I needed to pack for a last minute trip, you'd think they'd offer me a discount if not a full refund- something...anything???? Nothing. Just an attitude. With that said, at least the Merrillville office was kind enough to refund my passport photos required for the IDL.....but that still doesn't take away from their incompetence for not having the right ink. Thank god I checked the one they gave me in merrillville B4 I left the parking lot or else I would have been screwed big time overseas. It looked like a forged document. So AAA Mishawaka sucks. No one should go there until the idiots are fired and replaced with polite, professional and competent staff- and they train others to glue a photo in a paper book and stamp the 4 corners. AAA Merrillville are incompetent but nicer and hopefully now have their ink situation fixed. If you have the time unlike I did, save the stress and risk and go to the St. Joseph Michigan Branch. Never had an issue there and have been there 3 times for IDLs and there is always someone there who can do it as of May 2011 which I just got my latest one. Lastly the story above was from summer of 2008. I went back in fall of 2009 to Mishawaka to get another IDL (since its so close) and they again could not do it because the only person that could do it was off that day. That is when I went to the one in St. Joseph. That's the only place I'd go or recommend in the greater South Bend area. Peace-

We happened upon the Elkhart visitors center as it was directly across from the hotel we stayed at…read moreon a whim. We were SO glad we did. The docents gave us recommendations for a great family diner to grab breakfast down the street (can't remember the name unfortunately) and also suggested a self guided driving tour called the Heritage Trail. We received a free CD that directs you in about an hour and a half long loop (or all day if you take your time at each attraction) to all of the sights and attractions of Elkhart county and the surrounding Amish countryside. My boyfriend and I are young people and it was exciting and fun for us too so put your notions aside and just do it' It takes you through the major cute towns in the area and also to off the beaten country spots like Bonneville Mill Park (the historic mill is open and active Weds-Sunday) which was a real treat. It goes into historical detail of many of the spots and the directions were easy to follow. The visitors center also gave us coupons and had tons of brochures on local attractions. The quilt gardens were also a great tip from the docent to take a look at. We grabbed delicious donuts at an Amish bakery and wandered for hours around the Shipshewana flea market (open Tues/Weds). Even brought the pup along.
