Tranan is sort of one of our local venues and we've had some nice meals here. Unfotunately, tonight's dinner was not one of them.
My wife and I chose Tranan tonight for our wedding anniversary dinner. Tranan usually gets very busy in the evenings and we had not made a reservation so we arrived early. I thought we could start with a glass of 2007 Heriot Rosé champagne (SEK 145/glass). I'm used to having the wine poured at the table but our waitress brought us two half full glasses without showing us the bottle. A taste made me suspect that this bottle had been open a while but the champagne still bubbled.
We split a starter of duck liver paté (SEK 95) - which proved adequate for us both. My wife chose stekt strömming (a Tranan specialty) with mashed potatoes (SEK 160) and was happy. I went for the Saffrans risotto with haddock, prawns, octopus and vongole mussels (SEK 225). The plate came swimming in sauce. There was a generous helping of fish and seafood but nowhere near enough rice to absorb the sauce. When I pointed this out, our waitress tried to argue that it was a seafood risotto, but that was not what it said on the menu - according to which it was a saffrans risotto with haddock and seafood. She then offered to replace it - but I suggested she add more rice. Okay, but I'd have to wait until a new portion was cooked. So I declined. There was nothing wrong with the taste but it didn't look apetising (check out my photo).
The desert menu is limited to creme brulée, panacotta, a chocolate dish and one other dessert or a selection of cheeses. Boring! So we passed and went home, buying a couple of donuts to eat as our desert.
Moral of the story - stick to Tranans specialties. Saffrans risotto isn't one of them. And they should learn to serve their wine by the glass at the table! read more
