We were headed up to a cabin in Bellaire on a Friday evening, but unexpected ice derailed us. We…read morestopped off the highway about an hour and a half from our destination in search of a place to hunker down for the evening. Thankfully, Powers Lodge was open and not too far from the highway. It was around 9:00 p.m., and we ran to the front. The lights were off but the open sign was on. After ringing the door bell a few times, a man emerged and told us he had vacancy (not particularly surprising, all things considered). It looks as if the primary residence opens up into the front desk, so they're always there should someone press the bell. Unfortunately, we discovered that they don't take credit cards (in 2018), which is incredibly inconvenient at a time when many don't carry cash anymore. We ran to an ATM down the road and came back. The lodging is broken up into non-connected, individual cabins. The privacy is enticing. It's everything else that brings down my opinion of the place. The inside of our cabin had an incredibly potent odor - an unfortunate mixture of old air freshener, stale cleaning chemicals and a grassy funk. This wouldn't have been too bad had the smell not been so pronounced and somewhat nauseating. Compounding matters was the shabby bathroom. The shower is incredibly small - barely the width of someone's body. The shower head was below my head (I'm 6'0"). The hot water runs out after about five minutes or so. There's also a rather steep drop down from the shower floor to the bathroom floor (which is precious space that could have freed up room for those who are taller than 5'8" or so). I almost fell getting out. The bathroom itself was hardly insulated, so going to the bathroom meant you went from warm to freezing, even if you left the door open. Oh, and the towels they provide smell like moth balls. It could have been worse, but not by much. The price is pretty low ($60 a night), yet I still feel like I got less than I paid for. Only go here if you're in a crunch.

So we just headed south which there is not much around but small places with even worse reviews! Upper part of MI hotels can be costly it was getting late and thought we had to go all the way to Saginaw to find something ! We pulled off exit as it said there was a Walmart so figured had to be some hotels . This one did not come up on search Lumber Jack Lodge. Was not sure as we pulled up being it's hooked to a gas station in front then a restaurant also. What a surprise this was! Paid $147 with tax & fees here. Very clean looks newer but night just be a very well done renovation. The theme can be seen walking up and info from t lobby. Room was really nice Indoor pool area would be great for family with kids. Can get a room with balcony. They don't have breakfast which we don't normally care for anyways and other places to eat close by.

The walls are paper thing, so you hear all the noise in the hallway. Very high price here, compared to the other hotels in the area. But you get practically nothing for that high price. I really can't think of anything negative to say: our room was clean and in good repair and looked freshly painted. We had a comfortable recliner in which to enjoy the free wi-fi or the flat screen TV. The pool was great, clean and in good repair too. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. I'd stay again without hesitation. There were in room safes for use if you wanted for a buck fifty a night. The breakfast is modest but included in your room price. Again, the staff was very attentive, keeping the room clean and supplies stocked. The guests, however, were a real freak show: a carnival of bed hair, gym shorts and torn t-shirts, bare feet, belching and butt cracks. Best to turn your chair to the wall. They do have vending machines and ice, but no restaurant, but the place is in the middle of a discount mall complex, so there's many to pick from. No computer in the lobby but I've rarely seen anyone use these anyway. No exercise facility either. But for what you pay I'd say it's a great value. I didn't rate it 5 stars because that means "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" It's really nice but not quite up to the Woohoo standard.

There was an alarm clock that had multiple different charging cables in it. Very clean bathroom and the wood floors were nice versus carpet. 10/10 I would stay here again. My only complaints are very minimal... (I hope my complainants don't discourage people from staying here. It's a GREAT little motel. We were just passing through but I wish we could have stayed longer) The heat is set at 68° and then you can turn on the baseboard heaters if you're cold. My husband and I like it chilly at night so 68° felt very warm. Luckily they had a box fan in the corner so that was very helpful. My other complaint is the soap and shampoo and condition felt cheap and didn't smell very goos. I wish a motel as cute as this one would upgrade to a nicer recognizable brand.
