The receptionist on the phone was very very nice and gave me asap appointment. Called at11 am and saw the doctor with his great, professional team an hour later at 12 pm. I had dental issues after cancer and chemotherapy and needed a lot of work done. i told him I have fear around dental work but he assured me I would be fine in his care. Once the actuAl worked started started to have a few hesitations. if I tensed while he worked on my teeth he would tell me I just needed to breath deeply and relax. I tried but it was difficult and he would become stern and start talking to me in a lecturing manner. This continued until he had to be out of the office for surgery of some sort and without warning, I came to an appointment and instead of him, a different dentist was there. I felt confused. He ended up removing one of the implant post I had without talking to me about it and his work on my teeth was questionable. I had been fitted with dentures by Dr. K before his surgery and absence. when Dr. K. finally returned he seemed not to remember me and didn't believe me when I told him the dates he had done the work. He told me the dentures had to be much older than I was saying. he had his assistant check and found out I was telling home the truth. It only got worse from there. The dentures never fit correctly and when he would check them he would tell me the fit was good. The last visit broke down quickly. As he checked my teeth he kept asking me if I was grinding my teeth and saying they were fine. I told him that's not what he said before. I said that a number of times in response and he grew angry at me and raised his voice telling me to leave because he couldn't help me. He continued with a raised voice as I stood to leave. He said to me that it would have worked better with a lower bridge and I agreed as he blocked my way out of the room. The other patients were looking at me as I tried to get past him and to the door to leave. I finally got past him and hurried to the door to leave. It was one of the most humiliating experiences in my life.

They've kindly offered many options for anxiety but they have various levels of oral medications (which I prefer). My hygienist, Lupe, has been instrumental in my ability to receive dental care. She had my teeth in excellent shape so quickly. She's been so responsive to my problems with metabolizing all of the numbing agents. Dr. Lopez performed a root canal and crown placement. I was nervous that like many before, he would tell me I wasn't feeling pain, but just pressure, and keep on working. I finally had dental care without horrible pain! I have a beautiful functional crown in my mouth as I type this. The shape was excellent and the bite. My family member had the very same work on the very same tooth the day before me but at a different provider. She's still very sore. She has pain, swelling and is having to face her severe anxiety again to get the crown seated in two weeks. Within hours I was able to eat. I awoke the next day with very minimal discomfort which was easily remedied. Im eating hard crunchy foods a day later. We paid the same market price for our work but my experience has been so positive comparatively. I feel like they've really worked with my needs when possible to get my smile healthy. Scheduling is always very quick and easy. They let me turn up my music and respond very well to needs during visits. I recommend this dentist in general but especially to those who want to feel like more than a number when receiving this type of care.

Double check your EOB's against what they charge you. We have been patients of Downriver Smiles…read more(DS) for 40 years. Both of us really like Dr Gaunt. I had $10k+ worth of dental implant work the end of 2023. Later in 2024, my husband, John, was told a second time, he didn't need to pay the $20 copay again. He asked why. They had overcharged us over $700 on my dental work from 2023 and were using it $20 at a time to cover his copay (now a total of $40 against the $700 credit). They had been using our money for most of 2024. We were shocked and asked for a refund. In November of this year, they sent us a bill for $130. The DS insurance person was snippy with him, but looked into it and not all of the proper forms were sent to our insurance company. She corrected the mistake and we owed nothing. The first of December, I saw Dr. Gaunt to get a replacement upper denture. We paid them in advance on 12-11-25. I received an EOB from the insurance company on 12-23-25 for the claim they submitted on 12-11-25. (I didn't even get the denture until 12-31-25). They had overcharged us again - by $170. The DS insurance person told John they couldn't pay us because they hadn't received payment from our insurance company yet. On 12-31-25, Dr. Gaunt fit the dentures as best as he could. I also asked him the cost of completing the implant from 2023. When checking out, although we didn't ask her, the DS insurance person felt a need to tell John again, each step of the implant procedure. She stood directly in front of me the whole time and spoke directly to John constantly referring to me as "she". She never looked at me. She never said my name. I never said a word, but it was so condescending and embarrassing. Just because I'm old and in a wheelchair, doesn't mean I am blind, deaf, and dumb. Why would she act that way to me? When she was done, John asked her if we would receive a refund. She acted so superior again and said yes and answered with the same contempt when he asked her when. A couple hours later Morris called, identified himself as the current owner of the business and said because John was rude to his insurance person, we no longer were patients at his business. And he didn't want to hear anything John might have to say. I am now left with finding another dentist to pay for finishing the fitting my dentures - for which Morris has been fully paid. Whether John was rude or not, he has sent a letter of apology to DS. Again, check your EOB's.

WORST dental experience I have ever had. Do not go here. I saw all the bad reviews AFTER making my…read moreappt, and I considered canceling when I read the other reviews that say this place is awful. But the one lady Tina had been so nice on the phone that I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt anyway..since my insurance didn't cover many places especially. On the way there someone flagged me down to tell me I had a low tire...so I had to stop to fill it, which I wasn't even able to do and ended up driving there on a half flat tire..I raced in and checked the time when I went in and it was 3:08. My appt was at 3 and I apologized very sincerely and told them about the flat tire, the very rude receptionist "Joy" (ironic name huh?) actually put her hand up and told me to wait because she was on the phone. I waited a cpl minutes and she proceeded to tell a client on the phone that he could come in EARLY because their schedule is more open than usual, and the Dr is running ahead. She then hangs up and turns and tells me they can't see me because they have a 10 minute late period and it was 3:11!! Lol. I told her ok. I was 8 minutes late, for a very good reason, and she was on the phone! And can she please go ask someone, and she just said No!!! That is our policy!! So I said well can I please talk to someone else about this? And she just laughed in my face and said EVERYONE IS WITH PATIENTS! and I said "well that obviously isn't true because they were supposed to be with ME right now". And to treat a new patient this way, to have her in near tears, when they JUST said they have a clear schedule to another patient on the phone in front of me!! And then those cpl minutes making me wait made it go over the 10 minutes. I was there a little late sure, and I apologized sincerely. I risked my safety driving on a half tire to make sure I wasn't too late. But this woman JOY lied to me and disrespected me and when I asked to see the manager, the office manager came Out with a hostile attitude right away, she didnt want to hear my story at all, and didn't Care ONE BIT about my feelings or how long I had waited for this appt or just that there obviously was room to still see me, based on the call "Joy" made right in front of me..these ppl are very untrustworthy and disrespectful, and I think maybe sadistic too. It's sad because the reason I came was because Tina was so nice on the phone to me. But if this place is OK employing ppl who time and again treat ppl badly, like the reviews say (I'm so dumb to have ignored allllll the bad reviews!!!), then maybe they aren't good dentists either. Why would they be ok having mean ppl dealing with patients? Going to the dentist is already stressful without mean uncaring ppl too. Both of those women didn't care even a bit about me or patients in general it seems. I have gone to the same dentist for probably 20 years and I only was coming here as a second opinion to see if I could get a filling instead of a crown like my regular non sadistic dentist wanted...but I see now how lucky I was to have a much better dentist than this place all this time. DO NOT GO HERE. These are not nice people, and they just can't be trusted with your feelings, care, and time.
