First things first, Trail Hut Gear Exchange is a really cool store to have downtown! They just opened and have a somewhat smaller selection, but they have quality gear and clothing, and more available on their website.
I'm an outdoor enthusiast and traveler, and I have a particular fondness for both gear and independent stores. The building itself is a cool little historic "hut" built circa 1930. In short, it looks like a little shop you'd go into to buy supplies.
Because the current space is rather small, there isn't a *huge* selection, but they do have a spectrum of clothes, climbing shoes, headlamps, camping stoves, sleeping bags, tents, and books. They also have disc golf discs and other doodads. However, they use the space well, and so it has a decent enough selection without feeling cramped. They have some books for sale on their used equipment shelf and several other books and maps for rent.
I was not able to speak with the owner today because I just happened to stop by on my lunch break, but he seemed very friendly and knowledgeable.
I'm taking off 1 star for selection and for price. Remember that this is a consignment store, and not a straight used equipment store. Many of the products are new and are priced as such. Even the used equipment is not as low as you might expect. Not expensive, but not low, either. Their shelf of used equipment could use a little beefing up, but Trail Hut also just opened in February and I expect they'll add more stock in the future.
Overall, I thought Trail Hut Gear Exchange was really cool and had a lot of character! I respect the smaller outfitters in an age of REI and other big box stores. Places like this just have more personality and more of an adventurous spirit, in my opinion. I really hope they succeed. read more
