She was extremely friendly and patient and helped translate the menu items for us. We had homemade pasta with shrimp in a lightly spicy sauce, a steak with a rich/sweet mushroom gravy-like sauce and bean soup (split pea?) and salad. Dessert of chocolate soufflé and lemon ice cream was incredible. A digestif and some Belgium chocolates later and dinner was sadly over. More than the food, the location is not to be missed. Literally an old gate house, the building had been converted to a restaurant with an inside/outside feel, brick floors from the original street with small bits of light shining through, wood flooring further inside and an incredible back patio. It was hard to find good info on places to eat in Aachen for non-German speaking tourists like myself, so if you're reading this just go. Mostly locals there, so a real family feel. We were the last ones there and they were in no hurry for us to leave. They have a menu on their website (in German) and taxi service so you don't have to walk back to the city center. If you're in Aachen get a little off the touristy beaten path and don't miss it.

I didn't care for the fact that my plate was chipped and the French fries were something I maybe should've seen about substituting. Overall the décor and atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was OK, definitely nothing special. But the service was an absolute joke. The servers just stood around and talk to each other, right next to our table sometimes, instead of doing any of their work. We ordered drinks and watch them chat about the weather and about a new grocery store in town for more than five minutes, right next to our table. Then one of them turned to the bar, which was just a couple feet away, and finally poured our drinks. And, in a first for me in Germany, the beers were poured about an inch short of the legal measuring line. (beers in Germany have to be poured up to the mark that matches the size such as .3L, etc) I thought that was illegal? The decor is cheesy, kind of like a Pizza Hut. This place is highly un-recommended. (Though it did seem popular with over-70 set.)
