Been to a few sushi places in south bend and have been almost universally disappointed. Toyo however was wonderful. Great food, prepared masterfully. I am so sad to lower a star but service needs to get better My opinion still stands though. Their Tempura is the best I have ever had. Traveling to Seoul, LOs Angeles, Chicago, Orlando, San Diego and other big cities I still have yet to eaten the tempura with this type of crispness and not greasy/oil soaked. I come just to eat this and the stirfried spicy squid. But with us and only another couple there we waited to have water refill, to get napkins, and I was charged $2 for another bowl of rice. The tempura I got was suppose to come with big scallop as I had it before and this time there was only 2 tiny scallop. I thought it was leftover scraps and would have not eaten it until I realized our scallops were "missing". Really sad about this but I will still come every time I am craving that tempura. read more

Unpleasant, almost derisive service. The salad was drowned in a vinaigrette that tasted almost sour. The token tomato on the salad was about a day from being completely inedible. The edamame was served at what seemed like below room temperature. I will say the first crunchy roll we got was terrific, but the unagi roll was slathered in so much eel sauce you couldn't taste the sushi. And did I mention the service? To even ask a question made you feel like a bother. I'm not a fussy person. Give me a decent plate of food and be cordial (I don't even need polite). But aside from the first roll, all of the food was low quality and the service was even worse. We won't be back. read more

We've been coming here for literally decades. Not a budget-friendly stop for us, but when we want to go out for a "special occasion," this is invariably our stop. If you just get a dinner plate, it's actually fairly affordable. Add on a few orders of sushi and a bottle of wine, and you can be looking at a bill for two people. All a matter of how much you want to spend. The sushi is absolutely top notch. Nowhere in the area does it better. They use giant prawns for their shrimp tempura, which is heavenly. They serve some Korean fare as well, but sushi and tempura are our go-to's. To be fair, the one negative I will say is that the service is sloooow. Like, painfully slow. If you want a "quick bite," go somewhere else. But like I said, this is a date night destination for us. We're enjoying each other's company, so there's no rush. Go in knowing you're committing to an hour and a half or more, and enjoy the experience. Our favorite area restaurant, hands down. read more

A sushi expert I am NOT, but I do eat it from time to time....when I'm attempting to eat "healthy". I've ordered take-out from here several times, and I've always been very happy with my food. Tonight I ordered the Mountain Roll, the Spicy White Tuna Roll and the pork dumplings. The Mountain Roll was spicy and amazing, and the tuna roll was pretty solid as well. As far as I know, this is the only place in town with tonkotsu ramen on the regular menu. That alone is worth one star. The tonkotsu was pretty decent with room for improvement. The broth could be thicker (but the flavor was on point). The egg was hardboiled instead of soft. The chashu was good. read more

Oh the Toyo Grill, I remember the many ND Japan club dinners, the dates, the memories of the place when I was a student at ND from 01-'05. I still can look back on this place and smile, kind of like a warm memory that you can never forget. Anyways, this place is korean owned, but the quality is pretty good considered its in South Bend. I enjoyed both the japanese sushi and korean dishes. I recalled the BBQ Kalbi was delicious as well. Its a must visit for sure. I would like to return again to for old times sake. read more

I really like this place! My husband and I have been here several times and have not been disappointed once. We have not tried any of the Korean dishes but have had many of the rolls and hand rolls. The atmosphere is good; simple and clean. I like getting the group options so I can have a variety. The presentation is good and the prices are reasonable. Will definitely be back! read more

I love this place. I have traveled and eaten sushi all over the USA and in other countries. This really my favorite. I am sushi purist. When I go somewhere that just as sushi on the menu but, it is not what the restaurant is about, such as, Hana Yori Japanese Steak House, I do not expect them to go thru the fish fast enough to keep fresh inventory. At Toyo the fish is always fresh. This is truly the best sushi in the area. The tempura is great. The korean dishes are fabulous. You cannot go wrong here. Very traditional Japanese preparation and presentation, unlike a lot of other places around here that drown their stuff with sauce. WOW, Noah! I've been looking for something better throughout this country as well, and NOTHING can top my hometown's sushi; granted it's the only good sushi around that area- I completely agree. I've sampled many a city's soosh, and nothing compares. Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, and the Spider roll make my eyes roll back in my head. No silly "spicy sauce" (that mayonnaise-y stuff you get at most places, even the decent ones). The spiciness is IN the roll, yet never distracts from the fresh and distinctive flavor of the fish itself. If you have to wait for a server, or 40 minutes for one or two rolls to be prepared-- Deal! It's worth it. In the meantime, take the time to memorize the looped soundtrack- that's a kick in itself. read more

We picked up 4 dishes (Unadon, two different rolls and an appetizer -chicken skews) and all had exactly the same taste. Four dishes with no difference of taste! how do you call yourself a kitchen if all your food tastes the same? You put a huge amount of this brown sauce on top (gravy consistency, is it meant to be teriyaki sauce?) of each one of the dishes... disgusting. It tastes bad and it looks bad. What does it say about your food if you try to cover it with this sauce on top. Japanese food should be good, clean, fresh, and should look good, appetizing, inviting. We wanted to try a few dishes so that my 4 year old would eat some, he likes sushi usually and asked for some. He couldn't even eat the rice under the unagi because the brown sauce was everywhere and we could not find some rice untouched by it. As for the unagi, it did not look like eel. It's not only NOT Japanese but at a level of a bad fast food. I do not leave reviews, but this food sucked too much not to. The Whole Food rolls are clean at least, the rice is better tasting and they do not put tons of sauce on all their rolls. Such a disappointment and waste of money. read more
