Decided to modify my Rav 4 Prime and I can't say enough good things about the work Virgil and his team did on this build. They installed a 2 inch lift kit from LP Adventure along with new wheels/tires. Professional job all the way. The lift looks incredible. Also had 2 hood lights mounted and the work they did installing these was like it came out of the factory. After a lot of research, I filtered down to a Gen 5 RAV4 Hybrid due to the balance between reliability, size, fuel efficiency and look. After what seemed to be "engine failure", Toyota was trying to charge me $7k+ to replace the engine that had less than 50k miles which felt off. After receiving a recommendation from a friend and giving a call in a final push of desperation, Virgil predicted that the issue wasn't an engine issue but rather a computer issue. After inspecting (something Toyota also wanted to charge for), turns out Virgil was correct. Toymasters saved me time, money and many headaches with their open communication, quick service and full transparency throughout the whole process. For as long as I own a Toyota, I will be going to them for service knowing that they work with integrity and honesty. Save yourself the trouble and skip the dealerships, Toymasters is where it's at. The review is overdue, but hopefully I can help some other folks along the way. The main gist here - be aware of what you need, get a SOLID price for the repair, and don't get cheated or gauged. My background - beginner to intermediate level with auto repairs. I own/have owned multiple classic cars, and I can do *most* repairs on vehicles without computers, if/when I have the time (and/or patience). I initially found Toymasters after I bought my '86 4Runner several years ago. It was a beater, and need a lot of work, first of which was a new engine as a result of a blown head gasket. The engine install was fine and moderately priced. My main issues here were small, so I didn't think much of them (a couple broken connectors, etc). After 6k miles or so, the engine developed multiple oil leaks, from both the oil pan area, and the timing cover. Apparently these engines "have a tendency to need a sleeve" on a specific part around the timing cover so they don't leak, according to the engine builder - fine, ok, let's get it fixed. However, the shop claimed they weren't the ones who had installed the oil pan (even though it was the same oil pan that was on my original engine...) and blamed the engine builders, thus charged me for this repair. After paying for these repairs, I get home, park the car, and come back out a few hours later to the oil pan still leaking, and the power steering box gushing fluid onto the pavement. As an aside, Virgil had mentioned to me that, if the crankshaft pulley is "so stuck we can't get it loose, we will put a breaker bar on the pulley, and then crank the engine to get it loose," in reference to the need to remove the timing cover. Well, the steering box is located directly in line with where that breaker bar would spin if that had happened, so my guess was that it was collateral damage. I called, pretty frustrated at this point and feeling like I was now experiencing the "fix one problem, cause two more" type of mechanic. They took the car back and fixed the issues at no charge. No harm, this time, except for my lost time and irritation. Next, I have them replace my shocks. I requested Ranchos. I come back to find he's installed KYBs, and insists we never talked about Ranchos. His only offer is to "change my front steering piston to match the KYBs." I had just replaced the front piston myself with a Rancho piston which, of course, was higher priced than the KYB piston. As well, I was charged the original price for the entire job, which was supposed to include Rancho shocks, which are valued at a higher price than the KYBs. Sketch. Haven't learned my lesson yet? Nope! Second to last experience - AC repair. I asked them to convert my AC system from the old unhealthy r21 to the newer r134a. They charged me $1400 for the change over and refresh/rebuild, which did not include any new components. It pumped cold air for less than two weeks. Flashing forward, after I had sworn I'd never go back there, I started going through the AC system myself. When you do an r134a conversion, every o-ring in the entire system needs to be replaced to hold in the new, higher pressure Freon. How many were changed, you ask? ZERO. Final experience - I bought a vehicle that I'd been searching for for a while, and it ended up having a couple exhaust leaks (classic Bronco). This is obviously not a Toyota, but exhaust is exhaust, so I asked if they could help, and they mentioned they could. When I returned, Virgil mentioned it was "550 because it was hard to find a part we needed," which is a blatant lie. He handed me the bill, which stated $550. I was irritated, but I was still going to pay. I handed him $600. He then went to his computer, added $100 to the bill, and handed me a new bill for $650. WHAT THE HELL?? Obviously I handed that back to him, but, to ice the cake, he then insisted that I had only handed him $500, not $600. Seriously, dude? The worst part - within 2 blocks of leaving the shop, my rear axle started making horrible noises. I called, livid, and he mentioned "don't you remember, we were playing with the switches? Something must have happened." No, false, that did not happen. I took it to another mechanic, and the rear differential was blown. It seems like most of the other reviews are for regular maintenance or very simple non-complex repairs. Either way - I'd suggest you steer clear and find an honest mechanic. read more

I've owned 5 Land Cruisers over the past 10 years. 2 FJ62's and 3 FJ80's. I trust only one place with these, Toymasters. Virgil and his team are the absolute best in the business and do the job right. This place is a hidden gem in the valley. I've had everything from the rear main seal, oil pan gasket, birfields rebuilt and brakes and rotors redone. It always ends right back to factory spec. Virgil is thoughtful and meticulous with his work and Carlos and the boys take great care of the vehicles. The shop is safe and secure in a great little area off Ventura Blvd. I've notice a couple negative reviews, I can honestly say those reviews are the complete opposite of what I've ever experienced and I have a handful of buddies in the Land Cruiser community that trust Toymasters as well. Let me start off by saying that Virgil and Carlos bring a standard of service that is beyond 5 stars! Everyone should be operating at their level! My 85 Toyota 4x4 pickup was experiencing power loss issues. Virgil carefully and quickly diagnosed the problem and recommended effective solutions that solved the problem bringing my truck back to normal power output. He also discovered other minor issues that need follow up next time which I am eager to bring back. I started bringing my cars to Virgil and Carlos when I switched from older BMWS to older Toyota's awhile ago. They have done extensive work on my 1985 Pickup, making it drive and function very smooth. It had plenty of issues when I first purchased it and was visiting this shop a few times every other month to finally get it running right. They do great quality work in a quick turnaround time. I kept every receipt of jobs performed and when the time came to sell, the buyer was pretty excited to see 1) the quality of work done 2) quality of the parts used, and 3) who the work was done by as Toymasters are rather well known in the Toyota community (made the sale extremely quick). Just very recently I purchased a 1990 4Runner that blew smoke out the engine bay as soon as I got in my driveway after buying it. Great, overheated my new car. My first instinct was to call Virgil and he gladly suggested I bring it in first thing in the morning via tow truck. I did exactly that and just two days later I was back on the road with a new cooling system, wheel bearings, axles and other stuff I can't even remember. This 30 year truck literally drives like it just came off the lot and finally runs same way it looks on the outside. I can confidently say Virgil is driven by an urge to provide quality work to his customers. He's helpful, intelligent and very kind. At the time, I had 2 mechanics for my truck, and although they were good, they struggled to find parts and original parts at that. Awesome guys, they definitely showed me So Cal hospitality!!!!! My wife, dog and I were on a 18 day road trip, touring all over the west side of the USA. Los Angeles was our last stop before driving back to Houston. After 3800 miles into the trip, my Land Cruiser lost its brakes mainly to my ignorance and not replacing it before the trip. Which ended up breaking down in LA near our Airbnb spot. I'm not familiar with the area and yelped a Toyota repair shop. Toymasters Auto Clinic was the first one on the list. They were able to accommodate us last minute on a Friday afternoon and address my brake issues. The next day my Land Cruiser was all fixed up, just a day before I had to leave for Houston! The workers and owner are very wonderful and really do great quality work! Very thorough and paid attention to detail. The owner also gave us some great local food places to check out! I was bummed my Land Cruiser broke down but It was more of a blessing I stumbled upon this shop. An honest, more-than-competent and reliable mechanic. The owner specializes in Toyotas (which includes Lexus in that family) but he can work on anything. But he really knows Toyotas inside out. According to him, he only hires mechanics that also "really know their stuff". If nothing else, it is to make sure he can trust that the product his workers are churning out will not ruin his business' reputation. Sent three different Toyota vehicles now and they always come back with the problems fixed: AND NOT with additional problem that wasn't there before... like it happened in the past. My son's 2000 MR2 Spyder Would not pass smog. I took it to a local mechanic in Santa Clarita, He kept it for a month, and it came back without a smog certificate, still throwing codes. My wife used to take her 1983 Celica to Virgil back in the 1980s and we also took our 90s vintage Corolla and previa there as well for Virgil to work on them and he always did well by us. I told my son, "we need an expert. We need Toymasters." Virgil was able to identify five different problems with the car that were causing the codes including a cracked Gassville pipe, improper valve adjustment, fuel injectors not working properly, and defective mass air sensor. Virgil and his Mechanics took the time necessary to fix the car in and charge me what I thought was a very reasonable price.
