This post office is the post office of Mayberry ( an old reference about a wholesome story called…read morethe Andy Griffith Show). It's in a small town with colonial columns and red brick. There is a small entrance with a tiny group of post office boxes. When you enter the mail center space about 10ft X 10ft you are always greeted by a bell and a happy greeting from one of the workers. they always have what you need. There are overnight boxes, the latest stamps and all the mail info you would need. This place feels so much like home you want to come here even when you don't have mail. My prayer is always that the government bureaucracy leaves this functional and happy place alone. Stop by if nothing but take a picture .

I'm always all in when it comes to historic bridges especially when I can experience them first…read morehand and if I can walk across them then that's gets it to a entirely different level. I actually found this foot bridge by happenstance, I was driving down the highway and saw it connecting the two sides of the river, which is the intended purpose. Getting to this little gems is quite tricky and as you approach it on the residential side of the river you may be a little hesitant to pull into the narrow lane that sits between two homes but trust me the neighbors know what they have on the backside of their riverfront property - one friendly owner was outside and invited me in to check it out. These bridges are so cool but they were simply constructed to provide a solution which was "to get to the other side" I'm sure there is some correlation to "why did the chicken cross the road" but I'm not certain. The water below was running at a good pace and is very shallow you definitely wouldn't want to jump from or fall from this bridge the rocks would break you fall immediately after the splash. You could probably see everything you want to see here in about 10 minutes I stayed about 20 minutes - besides the bridge being super cool and the fact that it is historic there is more to it, the "love lock" phenomenon which symbolizes "unbreakable love" has attached itself to the structure. The love padlock phenomenon is like a weird alien growth that just won't die so think about this before placing your lock...

What a wonderful little place to visit! Not only will you get a very important history lesson on…read morethe video (watch as long as you'd like), but you may be so tuned in that you'll spend a good hour and a half like we did, but the gift shop and museum area will keep you entertained as well. When you make your way out to the grounds you'll be met with a beautiful archway and well manicured landscaping. The schoolhouse itself will have you believing that you've actually stepped back in time as you sit on one of the benches with those children under the instruction of Sam Houston himself!

My daughter went on a field trip and I was a chaperone with an elementary school and all is well except for the staff. I'm not sure if they were truly reenacting history but they were very Stern and rude with the children. To a point where I was uncomfortable and multiple times. All the activities and history and non Hands-On approach for all decent and recommended to most people that would have fun most of the time. Just try to go by yourself if you do decide to take any children as mass groups they are not very fond of even though multiple schools go year-round I'm pretty sure.

It only has 9'6" clearance so I did not try bringing the Sprinter van across. There is parking on the east side but not the west, so I left the van on the side of the road briefly. Note that the bridge IS open for vehicular traffic and there is a well-worn path down to the waterside if you want to try for a side photo. The historical marker gives context. It reads, "This bridge is named in honor of Frederick Emert who came here with his family in 1790 as the area's first settler. In 1997, under the leadership of Mayor Judy Perryman the Mayor and Board of Aldermen provided local funds to go with state and federal money. In the spring of 2000 the bridge was constructed by the team of Steve McCarter and Garry Shultz for the town of Pittman Center in its continuing effort to provide improvements within the town that further its vision, which is: "To create and perpetuate a quality living environment and to encourage quality development that supports that end. To encourage development that supports a tourist-oriented economic base that relates to and magnifies our unique relationship to and with the Great Smoky Mountains." "The bridge spans the waters of the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River which was designated an "outstanding national resource water" in March 1998 by the State of Tennessee. At that time, this was the only stream outside a national park to receive this designation. Environmental stewardship has played a prominent role in achieving this designation. Special thanks goes to the "Save the Middle Prong" organization whose members spent time and money and were ultimately willing to go to court to maintain the integrity of this outstanding natural treasure for future generations." Today was amazing! We went to see a castle right here in Tennessee! Floyd "Junior" Banks built the…read morecastle out in Loudon County TN called the Greenback Castle or Fortress of Faith. He dedicated this castle to the Lord and encourages everyone to come out and see it for themselves. He never charges a fee to visit, but donations are very much appreciated. He was excited to meet us and take us for a tour. He is a fascinating gentleman with some really interesting stories. He built the castle himself with donated items over the past 30 years and still works on it. Junior told us he never used a level or measuring device, God guides him. He lives in a house nearby on the many acres of property. I highly recommend touring this incredible castle (AT YOUR OWN RISK) and spending some time listening to Junior. I immediately went on Amazon and bought 2 of his books because he was so intriguing. This marker sits just off US-19, right across the river from Bryson City, with a handy parking lot…read moreadjacent that makes it an easy pull-off. It highlights Horace Kephart, the writer, naturalist and librarian whose book "Out Southern Highlands" became one of the defining works about life in the Appalachian Mountains. The marker also notes that a nearby peak, Mount Kephart, was named in his honor. If you're passing through, it's a quick and worthwhile stop. The setting is quiet, the river is right there and the marker gives you a snapshot of a man who helped shape both the literature and the preservation of the Smokies. Just a block from the Historic Swain County Courthouse (now the Heritage museum), this marker…read morepoints out some Civil War history that took place nearby. The marker reads, "Site of Union attack on Thomas's Legion, Feb. 2, 1864. Reduced Cherokee support for Confederacy. One mile northeast." and it is marker Q-8. It was erected in 2010 by the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. Brigadier General Robeert Vance's brief 1864 raid into Gatlinburg collapsed when Union cavalry scattered his force, leaving Colonel William Holland Thomas and his small Cherokee detachment to retreat into North Carolina. Union troops caught Thomas at Deep Creek on February 2, overrunning the camp and capturing thirty-two men, including eighteen Cherokees who later took the Union oath, and in some cases, enlisted in the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry. A second raid soon captured thirty-three more of Thomas's Cherokees, who were courted by Union authorities and likewise switched allegiance. The Deep Creek defeat, combined with hunger, inflation, internal tensions, and continued Union raids, shattered Cherokee support for Thomas and accelerated desertion from the Confederate cause.
