This year, I required three root canal procedures. I selected Dr. Chia Chen Susan Chi, DMD, at Town Center Endodontics in Pearland for this treatment. During the initial consultation, the doctor confirmed the necessity of all three root canals. I specifically brought to her attention that one tooth was symptomatic and requested that the treatment commence with that painful tooth. While the doctor acknowledged my request, she ultimately proceeded in an order of her own choosing. The work was completed in the following sequence: the two asymptomatic teeth were treated first. Following the completion of the first two procedures, it was determined that the funds allocated by my dental insurance for the calendar year had been fully exhausted. Given the pain I was experiencing from the remaining tooth, Dr. Chi proposed completing the third procedure, with the stipulation that I would cover the cost entirely out-of-pocket. We discussed the fact that the procedure would exceed the insurance coverage limit, but it was understood that the claim should still be formally submitted to the carrier. Submitting the claim would obligate the office to adhere to the contracted rates established with the insurance company for that specific service. Instead of following the contracted fee schedule, the office requested that I pay the full, unadjusted amount. While it is standard practice for many dental offices to collect the full fee upfront, they typically submit the claim, receive the Explanation of Benefits (EOB), and subsequently refund the patient any overpayment based on the negotiated rates. This standard procedure was not followed by Dr. Chia Chen Susan Chi's office. The office failed to submit any claims to the insurance provider, leaving the insurance company entirely unaware that any services had been rendered. Upon investigating the matter, we discovered two primary issues: 1. **Overpayment on Initial Procedures:** For the first two procedures, we were charged fees that exceeded the contracted rates, resulting in an unauthorized overpayment for both teeth. 2. **Unilateral Pricing on Final Procedure:** For the third tooth, due to the complete lack of claim submission, we paid the full amount demanded by the doctor, which bore no correlation to the established fees outlined in her contract with the insurance company. When my insurance company attempted to contact the doctor's office to obtain the requisite billing information, they were unsuccessful. It became clear that the doctor had unilaterally decided to set arbitrary, non-contracted prices for her services. All attempts to resolve this discrepancy with the doctor's office were futile. The office insisted their prices were correct and claimed to have a "special contract" with the insurance carrier that permitted them to establish their own service fees. However, the insurance company explicitly **denied** having any special contracts with Dr. Chi that would grant her the authority to unilaterally determine pricing. I am documenting this extensive account to serve as a warning to potential future patients of this doctor. This is the first time in my history with medical professionals that I have encountered a situation involving such deliberate deception regarding billing practices. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!!!! I had a very disappointing experience with Dr. Susan Chi as an endodontist. I was initially told that I needed a root canal, which caused a lot of stress and concern. Because I wasn't fully confident in the diagnosis, I sought both a second and third opinion out of pocket, and both confirmed that I did not need a root canal. Additionally, I had a tooth treated, and just two days later it started hurting again. I was then told that I had an infection, which was very concerning--but later I was informed that there was no infection. On top of that, I found the doctor to be rude and unprofessional. I did not feel listened to, and my concerns were not handled with the level of care and respect that any patient deserves. Being advised to undergo an invasive and costly procedure that was ultimately unnecessary is extremely concerning. It also felt like the focus was more on recommending expensive treatments than on carefully evaluating my situation and clearly explaining what was actually going on. I visited the office today since I found a cyst on my gum this weekend. I was referred to this office by my general dentist. Overall, service was great. The front office staff/ assistants were great from checking me in, performing my x-rays, and providing me with a treatment estimate with my insurance. Not only did things go smoothly with them, but they were also friendly and polite. The endodontist was also great with a good bedside manners. I felt comfortable when she walked in and assessed my issue. She was patient in explaining my situation and answering questions I had. I had little worry about her assessment since she seems very knowledgeable through her thorough explanation. read more

I recently went to a new dentist (Dr. Lee) and he suggested I see Dr. Chi about a tooth. I didn't feel I needed a specialist because I wasn't in pain. He insisted. When I met with her, I refused the 3D imaging. It wasn't necessary. She saw the regular x-ray and went through her own tests and told me how concerned she was and that I would likely have problems down the road if I proceeded without her seeing the 3D. She told me she saw something so concerning. I went in planning to pay $168. She had me very concerned and I relented to the 3D Imaging. Nearly $500 later, great news - nothing is wrong at all. Ummmm....this felt like a considerable scam. I would not recommend this office and I am rethinking my Dentist choice as well. read more

I was referred to Chia Chen Susan Chi (or Susan Chi) from my local dentist for a certain scan for a root canal regarding a certain tooth. I was estimated at $300+ for a consultation and 1 scan. Which the tooth was not treated or even fully reassured for a root canal. My then estimated cost became $5,000+ for an entire procedure that became even more complex. My complaint is the pricing but understandable since these procedure can be expensive. The issue is the uncertainty of the procedure that we're going to be performed and the uncomfortable tone I was spoken to. I had ultimately went to consult with another endodontist and had everything done. My experience overall wasn't pleasant with Chi and I advise anyone to not feel pressured to solely go to this office if your experience was similar to mine. read more

Dr. Chi is very patient and thorough in examining your issue, and clearly explains cause of issue and treatment options. Her staff is excellent. I was referred to Town Center by my previous dentist office who didn't properly seat my crown and now think I need another root canal done... What!!!!! Well I was initially excited about the modern upgraded intake process it was smooth and didnt require you to complete an additional 5 pages or forms when you arrived to the office. They were able to get me scheduled the same week. So I thought ok this is promising. Umm, nope!! The provider did several exams and reviews and then says she needed a 3D image and my insurance would pay for half of it and it would help her know if I had a hidden canal or small fracture that cant be seen from the regular dental xrays. That threw me off. This Endontist pointed out an entirely different area of concern and didnt have any concern with the area the previous dentist identified and she only pointed out this new area when I mentioned that previous dentist said he saw something... ok so one of them are dishonest or just fishing. So I asked what would be the cost of this 3D imaging because I was scheduled for consult and treatment. Office Rep comes in and says my insurance wont cover all the procedures/testing the doctor did if I have the procedure done in same day and it would cost like $78 bucks for 3D, well sure I have my HSA card and can easily get it done but the gut feeling I had said Nope dont proceed with anything. So I didn't and scheduled for second opinion with another provider. read more

The wait was not very long. However the dentist herself seemed all about the money. When talking to her about my nervousness, she tried bullying me into a procedure I had to keep refusing. Also before my arrival, I made sure to complete the required paperwork which included verifying my insurance information. When checking out after my appointment, I was told that their office was out of network and I had to pay $250 for visit. When asked why i was not informed that they were out network before my appointment, their response was "it was a mistake, sorry". She then showed mr. The form in which someone scratched out yes and wrote no. Did that help, NO. I should have been informed as soon as it was found out. But they failed to do so. Also if someone refuses something, the dentist should respect the decision. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS DENTIST OFFICE. read more

My dentist refer me to endodontist Susan Chi to repair a root canal I done years ago I also was given a x- ray sheet to show from my dentist office so I wouldn't have to pay for another x- ray of the problem area they didn't use it they wanted to do another one . I was charge $150 for a office visit and $165 for a x- ray a total $325 I paid then I was told they couldn't do anything for me I was in out of there in twenty minute and the office staff was rude this place is a rip off. read more

I was referred to Dr Chi by current dentist and was excited to hear that she was a great dentist The initial visit was great but expensive, since it was my 1st visit I needed a 3D x-ray which cost me about $200 because my ins apparently wouldn't cover, then because I had previously had service done on same moler my ins wouldn't cover it, so now I'm $1600 out of pocket. Well it was going to be 3 treatments in total the next 2 were awful. I had to wait for 55min with my mouth ready to work on and the dr. was busy with another person I keeped asking the assistant to remove the rubber and metals to keep my mouth open but she refused to, she keep telling me that the dr. was ready and within 2min she would be working on me. The 3rd appointment was worse since the infection was still there she just cut open my gum where a blister had formed and cleaned it then the root canal sealed it and said well you just might need to get your moler removed. Then I found out 6 months later that I owed them an additional 350.00 for more work and didn't even try to bill my ins. I ended calling my ins and it turned out that since we're active military they would cover all the service done in my moler I was so excited thinking that I would get my money back well not too fast. I called the office and asked them to bill my ins that they would cover all my services and then they told me that they're out of network ( which they never mentioned to me nor the dentist that referred me)and that I still owed them that money. After ins paid them for service billed I was due only $10.00 back it's been over 6 months and they still haven't refunded me. Also the 3D x-ray it's a joke because the assistant knows a trick per dr. Chi that with the regular xray you can still see the same thing as the 3D. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend this Dr. She'll all about the $$ . They called me and said I could come in for an earlier appointment in the day. Got there at the time they asked and waited over an hour and left. Dr. Chi performed a root canal on my daughter in November 2016. Since she had been dealing with an infected tooth for quite a while she had more damage than seen in a usual root canal. Without going into all of the details, due to the unusual situation, Dr. Chi continued to see my daughter many times, over a period of six months trying multiple treatments to save her tooth. She not only did great work but she was also gentle, took extra time with her and answering all of our questions whenever asked. She even personally returned our calls after hours. Her staff is helpful, friendly and goes the extra step to make everything easier for the patient and family. I recommend Dr. Chi highly and trust her with any of my (and my family's) future needs. read more
