This year, I required three root canal procedures. I selected Dr. Chia Chen Susan Chi, DMD, at Town…read moreCenter Endodontics in Pearland for this treatment. During the initial consultation, the doctor confirmed the necessity of all three root canals. I specifically brought to her attention that one tooth was symptomatic and requested that the treatment commence with that painful tooth. While the doctor acknowledged my request, she ultimately proceeded in an order of her own choosing. The work was completed in the following sequence: the two asymptomatic teeth were treated first. Following the completion of the first two procedures, it was determined that the funds allocated by my dental insurance for the calendar year had been fully exhausted. Given the pain I was experiencing from the remaining tooth, Dr. Chi proposed completing the third procedure, with the stipulation that I would cover the cost entirely out-of-pocket. We discussed the fact that the procedure would exceed the insurance coverage limit, but it was understood that the claim should still be formally submitted to the carrier. Submitting the claim would obligate the office to adhere to the contracted rates established with the insurance company for that specific service. Instead of following the contracted fee schedule, the office requested that I pay the full, unadjusted amount. While it is standard practice for many dental offices to collect the full fee upfront, they typically submit the claim, receive the Explanation of Benefits (EOB), and subsequently refund the patient any overpayment based on the negotiated rates. This standard procedure was not followed by Dr. Chia Chen Susan Chi's office. The office failed to submit any claims to the insurance provider, leaving the insurance company entirely unaware that any services had been rendered. Upon investigating the matter, we discovered two primary issues: 1. **Overpayment on Initial Procedures:** For the first two procedures, we were charged fees that exceeded the contracted rates, resulting in an unauthorized overpayment for both teeth. 2. **Unilateral Pricing on Final Procedure:** For the third tooth, due to the complete lack of claim submission, we paid the full amount demanded by the doctor, which bore no correlation to the established fees outlined in her contract with the insurance company. When my insurance company attempted to contact the doctor's office to obtain the requisite billing information, they were unsuccessful. It became clear that the doctor had unilaterally decided to set arbitrary, non-contracted prices for her services. All attempts to resolve this discrepancy with the doctor's office were futile. The office insisted their prices were correct and claimed to have a "special contract" with the insurance carrier that permitted them to establish their own service fees. However, the insurance company explicitly **denied** having any special contracts with Dr. Chi that would grant her the authority to unilaterally determine pricing. I am documenting this extensive account to serve as a warning to potential future patients of this doctor. This is the first time in my history with medical professionals that I have encountered a situation involving such deliberate deception regarding billing practices. Consequently, we ended up paying nearly **double the appropriate price** for her services.

I was initially told that I needed a root canal, which caused a lot of stress and concern. Because I wasn't fully confident in the diagnosis, I sought both a second and third opinion out of pocket, and both confirmed that I did not need a root canal. Additionally, I had a tooth treated, and just two days later it started hurting again. I was then told that I had an infection, which was very concerning--but later I was informed that there was no infection. On top of that, I found the doctor to be rude and unprofessional. I did not feel listened to, and my concerns were not handled with the level of care and respect that any patient deserves. Being advised to undergo an invasive and costly procedure that was ultimately unnecessary is extremely concerning. It also felt like the focus was more on recommending expensive treatments than on carefully evaluating my situation and clearly explaining what was actually going on. Overall, I left feeling confused, unsupported, and uncertain about my dental health. I would not recommend this provider.

I had a root canal many years ago and my crown recently got cracked after years of wear and tear…read more My dentist referred me to this place and I was able to get an appointment for a consultation the same day. The dental assistant, Lori, was very nice and took great care of me. Dr. Vogel was also nice. He made sure to explain the whole process of a root canal retreat and what I could expect. Also that with every procedure, there could be unexpected changes once they get in there. After a brief consultation they did some panoramic X-rays and I got on the schedule for the next week. Fast forward a week and I showed up for my appointment. We got started after Dr. Vogel explained what he was going to do and me telling him my concerns from the previous root canal. Unfortunately things did not go as planned since my tooth had some infection in the root. Dr. Vogel explained that we would not be able to finish up and he was going to clean out as much infection as he could and get me a temporary filling so we could go over my next step options. After everything, he took the time to call my dentist and speak with them about what I needed next. He sent them the X-rays he took and waited with me while we discussed the plan. He told me that he was not going to charge me for the root canal since he wasn't able to do it and instead charged me for an incomplete. I appreciate that and it ended up saving me a lot of money in the end... especially since I will now be visiting an oral surgeon. While I hope I never have to have another root canal, I would definitely come back to Dr. Vogel and highly recommend him for any endodontic needs.

My husband is disabled and suffered a stroke that significantly affected his mobility and cognitive…read moredecision-making. Because of this, I attend my husbands appointments as his support person and representative. When called back for our appointment, I accompanied him to the exam room to help him as he cannot walk unassisted. The dental assistant escorted us to the room and took x rays. I stood behind the wall and then she asked me to have a seat in the exam room. Dr. Brian Duncan proceeded to come in with an extremely dismissive and a negative attitude. He asked my husband about the visit and I helped answer as my husband cannot longer communicate effectively. I asked if I could explain why our prior doctor referred us to come here. Dr. Brian Duncan proceeded to snap that I have "broken protocol". His protocol was that I was not allowed to represent my husband and could not assist my husband during this appointment. He proceeded to say "this is not going to work" and walked out of the room with no further explanation. This was extremely distressing, especially considering my husband cannot walk independently and relies on my assistance to navigate medical visits. For a patient with disabilities and cognitive impairment, compassion and flexibility should be the standard of care. Instead, we felt dismissed and treated with a complete lack of empathy by Dr. Brian Duncan. Dr. Brian Duncan should understand that caregivers and family members are often essential advocates for vulnerable patients. I hope this office reconsiders how they handle situations involving disabled patients and their caregivers in the future.

Although he says he does sedation dentistry, he only uses oral sedation, you cannot get I.V. sedation and be knocked out completely. I had an abscess and pain was at at level of about 25, so I was desperate for help. He will not prescribe anything stronger than Tylenol or ibuprofen for pain. He did give me antibiotics which started to help in 24 hrs, but pain level still at about 10. I agreed to root canal with just oral sedation, but due to major trauma in the past with the rubber dam and having my mouth clamped open which made me totally freak and feel like I could die, I was hesitant that oral sedation would be enough. I was in a panic when I arrived for the root canal and tried to talk to him about how he would work with me if I started to freak out. He became angry and upset with me that I wasting his time and if I left he would lose 3 hrs of money. I couldn't believe how nasty he was and he said if I leave he would never be my dentist again -- that was fine with me. As poor as he is with people, though, his staff was so kind and concerned about my comfort and I liked them very much. Too bad they work with a terrible dentist.
