Tough Luck has updated their food program with barbecue from Austin, Texas. (That means all the previous food reviews and photos are expired) La Barbecue in Austin https://www.yelp.com/biz/la-barbecue-austin-3 is famous, https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/texas/austin_2958315/restaurant/la-barbecue. La Barbecue has opened Lil' Barbecue for Tough Luck. I have had the pleasure of visiting a small barbecue joint in the Hill Country, locals knew, this would be about 8x that size, but not a large barbecue spot with a giant line. It's a straightforward menu of meats, sides, sandwiches, sausage on a bun, Frito pie, chili, and a few desserts. It is an almost all meat and dairy menu with little to no accommodation. The brisket was tender with the fat rendered out and just a touch of salt. It was not oversmoked as in hours or days of aftertaste. The mac and cheese tasted like gouda with just a touch of sweetness, maybe a little pimento or sweet paprika. The collards were coarsely hand torn and very neutral. The pickles were tasty. The Texas toast was regular white toast, not thick. They have 2 sauces in squeeze bottles at the table, a sweet/sour brown sauce and an even more tangy mustard sauce. There is a universe of barbecue sauces and you can make your own, so these were fine. In a food town, there is a temptation to overdo it with the strength of flavors, spices, or unusual ingredients. This spot is not that. Each dish forms a nice contrast between bites and that evolves as the meal develops and the dishes cool. The meal is served the traditional way on paper in a tray, there are metal utensils, better napkins - a necessity for barbecue, plastic water cups, and of course their signature bar with a focus on whiskey. Paper to-go boxes for leftovers. Order at the counter, and self-busing. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is about equal indoor and outdoor covered seating, but outdoors could be drippy with any wind.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Street parking. The bar staff was solid, the food staff checked on customer satisfaction, and it was all excellent. If you like barbecued meats and the Texas menu that goes along with it, or you want to try the many styles of barbecue in Portland, or from your travels, Lil' Barbecue at Tough Luck is a must visit.

Great BBQ! The tots are very unique, think mashed potato that has been cubed and fried to a crisp perfection. Brisket grilled cheese is a great item on the menu - pairs well with both of their house made bbq sauces. Sat outside on a beautiful day and food came out very quick! Would be happy to return.

Great bbq - we got the platter with all meat and all sides, which was good value for about 3 ppl. I liked the ribs, brisket, and sausage best - though pork was certainly tender. Sides were good. Service quick on an early Sunday afternoon.

Ok so unfortunately I didn't get some really good pics. But trust me when I tell you that this place is nice and chill. Staff was nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance was great.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]So many heaters outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Met up with people to play card games so you get that pic instead. I'd def come here again.

I really enjoyed my visit to this establishment. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was a lot of seating indoor and out, which was nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a great place to experience during the warmer days, since it has open spaces.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I loved the artwork and the style of this restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The garlic cheese fries were amazing. They fries alone are phenomenal and full of flavor. The hibiscus soda was good, but needed a bit more flavor. The Negroni was excellent and refreshing. The tri tip steak sandwich was flavorful and delicious. I would definitely order it again. The service was a bit slow, but worth the wait. I look forward to coming back and trying more off the menu.

Ask the Community - Tough Luck

    How is the patio?

Hello Matthew G. The Tough Luck patio is absolutely incredible. Spacious with areas in both the sunshine and a covered section as well. In the winter there are gas heaters and firepits. Oh, and it's dog-friendly too.

    Is the patio covered?

Yes part of the patio is covered

Highlights; carrot hollandaise served with broccoli, nettle risotto & the rhubarb cocktail. Only critique was the Lions mane mushroom entree was difficult to cut and eat. My dinner date was put off by the mass & texture of it. Perhaps cut in strips & prepared in the style of Trippa alla fiorentina could make this ingredient amazing. Overall great night.

We ordered five items to share. We had to take leftovers home, so I would say 4 dishes for three people would've been better. But it was just really hard to choose because everything looked amazing. My favorite items by far were the Chantelle chowder and the watermelon radishes. The tortellini soup reminded me of a Ramen broth, but with tortellini in it instead of Ramen noodles. The table next to me ordered the kimchi and chips, and I wish I had ordered it, but usually kimchi is too spicy for me so that's why I didn't. I think they even ferment the kimchi there. I'll definitely order that when I go back. My least favorite item was the barbecue tempeh, and that was mainly because of the soft consistency of the tempeh. But the celery root mash that came with it was delicious. The service was exceptional. The bathrooms were clean and nice. And I highly recommend this place and will definitely be going back.

I've looked forward to writing this review for a number of weeks now... ashamed I haven't done it…read moresooner. Wilder. WOW. JUST WOW. This is another one of those rare reviews I write where I regret we can't give more than 5-stars! Wilder is truly one of the greatest restaurants in all of the Portland metro. Discovered on a random Saturday morning months ago, we stumbled in for a late brunch... it was a knock-your-socks off moment. First, their Benedict is absolutley delectable! We all know I'm a sucker for a good Benedict but I'll put this one in my top-3 EVER! Absolutely wonderful! Secondly, having returned multiple times for brunch, I can confidently say, you can't choose wrong from their menu! During brunch one morning, we came to the realization that Wilder offers dinner, as well! Sure enough, we were back within the week. First thing we noticed was gluten-free fried chicken... what? Who would have thought?!?! Of course, it was on the list + their Steak Tartare. I'll just say, we couldn't have ordered better. Their chicken is literally, out of this world. Having lived in the southeast of the country twice now, I feel as though I've experienced some pretty darn good fried chicken. However, the Wilder's Fried Chicken was absolutely enchanting, every bite! The Steak Tartare was served beautifully, with a yolk on top... how much better does it get? Ambiance is cozy and romantic. Bright and intimate in the mornings for brunch, dark and moody in the evenings for dinner. It strikes the perfect mood, every visit. We would be remiss not to mention their fabulous staff. Each and every member of their team is a delight. Professional, kind, friendly, and engaging. Nothing but positive interactions, every single time. Drinks are wonderful, bar staff is obviously knowledgable. Great selection of spirits and wine. Food is to die for. Staff is top-notch! Wilder has earned nothing less than a perfect 5-star rating. Truly in our Top 3 favorite restaurants in all of Portland and permanently on our weekly list of places to visit. As it has started to become our Friday "date night" spot, it certainly makes me anxious for the weekends to get here! Go enjoy, you won't regret it! Thank me later!

Special shout out to the kitchen staff for big multitasking energy: watching the game, closing out the place, and firing out some amazing food. Wilder's near-close happy hour offerings were both tasty and generous. Cocktails featured offerings from local distillers that yielded complex flavors but nothing that was "trying too hard" to be artisanal. Also Made my date's night that they were using polenta as a bun.

You would see that it's going to a motel, you would think to add the silverware. Fortunately, I was able to get silverware from my motel's breakfast room. The lumpia were very good. They were not greasy at all. They are smaller than standard eggrolls, but because they use more meat and less veggies than your standard eggroll, they pack a lot more flavor. Everything inside was seasoned well, and I really enjoyed them. They came with a vinegar based dipping sauce that I liked The "garlic Ponzu" salmon poke? No, not nearly as good. For the price they were charging, it was not a very big portion. Besides that, it just wasn't that good. A good salmon is normally pink to orange. This salmon was barely pink. I couldn't taste the garlic or the Ponzu at all. The veggies were crisp, the rice was a good quality, but there was just no seasoning. The salmon was very bland. I didn't know if it was just because of the seasoning, maybe they used a low quality or a previously, frozen salmon. I love good salmon. This was not good salmon. For the price I paid, not counting the DoorDash fees because those are added in anyway, I just felt I didn't get my moneys worth. Next time I'm in the area, I will find another place. Thanks anyway.
