Water polo has had a profound impact on his life and character. It has taught him discipline, teamwork, and has greatly strengthened his confidence. Water polo is far more than a sport. It instills values every growing child needs to learn, experience, and carry with them beyond the pool. Coach Nicole(10U) is truly exceptional--sharp, deeply committed, firm when needed, and always willing to go above and beyond for the kids. She lives and breathes the game, and what our son has gained under her guidance has far exceeded our expectations. If we were asked to make the same decision about SJX today, we would do so without hesitation--just as we did three years ago.

The club administrators do a great job of sharing the schedules of both practices and games/tournaments. We joined SJX after some bad experiences with other clubs and were happy to see our child enjoy going to each practice and make some great (hopefully lifelong) friends. The only knock, and why not a five-star plus experience, is that the club is popular and has a lot of kids. This leads to coaches working with larger groups. They do their best, but there are limits. One reason the club is so large is that they are the best option in the critical phase when you are starting and quickly developing as a player. Another downside is that if your player progresses to a high level, it would make sense to look at other options where more high-level teammates and tournaments accelerate and improve chances of playing at the highest levels. But this only really applies to those "star players" and likely not to those writing and reading a Yelp review before joining.

Some regions run like well-oiled machines while others run in fits and starts. If the parents and other volunteers are well-organized, they can have a massive impact on the lives of the kids playing. Region 64 has been running at a fairly good pace for a long time and many people are driven to help the organization even though their own kids have long graduated. Here's to wishing for many more years of success of Region 64 and of AYSO as a whole.

I strongly regretted sending my kids to AYSO 64 for two seasons. In fact the organization worked…read morelike a circus. Here are the reasons: 1. Lack of professionalism. AYSO has been around for many years. But it's hard to believe they don't have a course agenda/plan for kids at each age group. Like what age and which week they should master what kind of soccer techniques, when to start teaching kids soccer formations/positions. You can probably hire two college students who majored in sports education to design it in a summer. But you don't find that in AYSO. 2. Irresponsible volunteers. That's due to bad management. In our teams, we had no team manager, no assistance coach, no referee, no goal parent. For two seasons! And the organization didn't do anything, they just allow free riders. The team can't function with so many absent positions. 3. Big-ego jokers. This is the opposite of those in option 2. I call these people jokers because they miss-positioned themselves in a kids program. Obviously you don't need any creditability to be volunteers here. So these jokers just came in and had always to be right. Imagine these people become coaches or referees. They cheat in games, they run over others ideas and they think they own this team. 4. Chaotic management: Our schedule and practice location has been changed back and forth. In one season we were promised to have at least 10 games but only had 8. Overall I don't think it's worth the time spending with AYSO. For younger kids ( under 8) I think it's probably an OK option for them to just running around. But if you want a relatively serious soccer program, I suggest you find somewhere else. After all no one wants to play soccer in a circus.

If you put in the work, you'll receive amazing results. For example, I was a lefty. Coach Tony and Ryan push me through to learn new techniques before or after practice. They also love to let you try new things! I am very short, but they let me play as middle just for fun. The Eclipse volleyball club (EVC) has been resurrected with two boys team, a 12s and 13s for…read more2022-23. They are now adding girls team. My son played against EVC during the 2022-23 season. For 2023-24 season, we joined this club on the 14s team for many reasons. First, after gaining a year of experience as a volleyball parent, we realize we did NOT want to commit to the level of jetsetting travel all over to play, given his current age. EVC plays in the Power league (as do all boys teams in the SF Bay Area) competitively. EVC also plans to play in the National Qualifier, again relatively local travel (this year held in Roseville, CA). The boy season at EVC is a shorter season. If you have your son join the full-on teams, the commit is for the full boy season that runs Sept to Jan, break (for middle school/h.s. season), then resumes in May through end June. With EVC the season runs from Sept to Dec (matches the Power League). For the other times, EVC runs an Academy, so I expect my son will be attending to continue his skills development. This is a +/- time and cost balancing act to consider. We wanted to train and play with a competitive team, but loathe the commute time . The great thing for EVC is that a majority of the practices are on the weekend. So, I have traded off my weekends vs. the headache of weekday practices. Another reason I like is the small club feeling. EVC currently only has two boys team who both enjoy direct coach time from Coach Dan, who is a former player for Stanford. He is assisted by his parents who themselves have played on the national team for China (his parents ran the previous girls club before the pandemic--this post-pandemic Eclipse is a whole different operations). What this means is that my son will be growing and accessing with the same coach. At the bigger club, great coaching changes from year to year. Same coach vs. year-on-year? There is +/- balancing act to consider. EVC is evolving. As noted, they will add girls vball club for 2023-24, which I will have my daughter join. We will keep evaluating as my kids grow/develop their vball and as EVC changes, but I only see positive, great things going forward for the resurrected Eclipse volleyball club!

At the beginning of the season, many of the girls were around the same skill level, but throughout the season you could really see how much they all improved. As they learned how each other played and built trust as teammates, their confidence on the court grew so much. It was really rewarding as a parent to watch them develop both individually and together as a team. As far as coaching, Smash Koala has a great group of coaches which gives players the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and perspectives. The coaches were encouraging, positive, and genuinely cared about their players and their growth. They created a fun and supportive atmosphere while still challenging the girls to work hard and improve. What really impressed me about SK is how they truly live by what "KOALA" stands for within their club. As a parent, you can see their values of kindness, opportunity, ambition, leadership and authenticity, reflected in the way the coaches work with players and how supportive everyone, including parents, is toward one another. One of the best parts of the club was how family-oriented and welcoming it felt. The community surrounding the club is amazing and the sportsmanship from players, coaches and families really created a positive vibe. We're thankful for everyone we had the honor meeting throughout the season. And we're excited to see the club continue to grow!
