BBQ pulled pork tots with cheese sauce and a sprinkle of old bay
    Michelle P.

Third time's a charm for me and the Tot Cart. I've done some thinking, and I think they've done a little improving as well. I had my moment of realization when thinking about the Tot Cart's core purpose. They are a mobile unit selling tater tots. Sure, you can go to a restaurant that serves them instead of fries. Sure, you can get frozen ones. Sure, you can peel and fry your own potatoes (Ha! Yea, right). But this truck does that for you, and gets inventive with the flavors... on top of the basic premise of serving mobile tots. With that being said, today's lunch was catered by the Tot Cart (it's okay to be jealous). The tots were fresh out of the fryer hot. They were perfectly crispy on the outside with pieces of actual potato on the inside. I had the Drunk Tots and the Garlic Parm Tots. The Drunk Tots were served IN the cheese sauce. Brilliant! The bottoms ones got to soak in the cheesy goodness the longest and I got to control my dipping. The cheese sauce is better than your average cheese sauce because it's made with beer. I'm tot drunk right now. Juuuuust kidding. I felt obliged to try to Garlic Parm Tots again after my original qualm of the parm and garlic not sticking to the tots. Without the use of any condiment, the toppings stuck to the tots on their own. Perhaps it was the heat from the tots acting as an adherent. Whatever it was, it made a world of difference. I still won't be hitting the Tot Cart on a regular basis out of fear of weighing five-million pounds. However, when the timing is right I can see more of these special tots in my future. So as an aside, the Tot Cart was just named Best Food Truck by Philly Mag's Best of Philly issue. I name the tater tot the best form of potato out there in general. Let that bold spud statement marinate in your noodle.

During Memorial Day weekend, the PHAIR open-air market was at Oval Park. Events at Oval Park often feature an impressive lineup and during that weekend, the Tot Cart was featured. Owner Julie Crist opened up shop in March 2013 and has since grown to be a mainstay in the heart of Philly foodies. I missed out on my chance to try this Temple-based food truck during 2014's Old City Night Market (they were sold out within an hour or so). So while there was still a considerable line at PHAIR, the Tot Cart was ready for the belly of this pig. Scanning the menu options, I had to go with the loaded tots - best of all worlds. Loaded Tater Tots [$6] Tots, bacon, drunk cheese, sour cream An abundant amount of taters were thrust into the bowl - a perfect amount for the price. The drunken cheese is naturally made with beer and a mix of cheese - heavenly. Forget cheese whiz - toss some of this on a cheesesteak and call it a day. The crispy bits of bacon added some savory saltiness, with the sour cream providing a cool, creamy element to each bite. This was so good I almost went right back in light after one bite. Sometimes, good ideas take you back to childhood. The best ideas take something good and keep it relatively simple. Tot Cart - consider me sold. Everytime.

    TOTS!!

I love the tot cart sooo much! First time I ate here was at Chadds Ford winery on a rainy December day. We walk up and see that there is a place serving hot tots with toppings!?! Sold!! I tried the garlic parm which is definitely my favorite that I have ever tried from the tot cart. They take tots that are cooked absolutely perfectly where they stay super crispy, but not burnt, and then the load them with garlic and parm. When I say load, I mean it. I probably should not have breathed in the vicinity of another human for days. My boyfriend tried the bacon tots. He loved them so much he has never steered away from them. The first time they were absolutely smothered in bacon. He ate them with a giant smile on his face while I watched nervously expecting a heart attack at any second. This place really values the customer. Yes they are tater tots, but they really care about how they come out, which is so important. We went to night market and wanted to get some tots. Well they hadn't quite gotten some of the toppings to the quality that they wanted, so they didn't serve them. My boyfriend had to risk death again by ordering the bacon tots. Seriously I think there are 8 strips of bacon on these. However, this time when he was handed the tots, it seemed like there were only 2 or 3 strips. My heart rejoiced. He will live! Except the woman working there noticed this and immediately sent it back demanding more bacon as this meager amount wasn't enough to slow a human heart beat. I was saddened, but my boyfriend rejoiced. I can't blame him as it really shows that they are trying to turn out a quality product. My one complaint is that they only serve one size. I cannot finish the one size. I would really prefer for there to be two size options so I don't waste those amazing little tot masterpieces.

    Western omelet tot.

I had the Western Omelet Tot--onions, green peppers, eggs, "drunk" cheese, over tots. Came in a relatively small cup. It was filling enough to make for lunch--admittedly, I wanted more (would have paid $7 for a bigger portion). But I had my fill. Maybe the small portions are done with health in mind! Very friendly owners, accept Square, and want to hear feedback. I'll try the others and see if this is worthy to break my ubiquitous three-star review line.

G-Parm with bacon tater tots from the Tot Cart. Yum!

One of my favorite Philly area food trucks! If you're expecting a well balanced meal, this isn't the cart for you. They sell one thing and one thing only: tots! But this cart is literally tater tot heaven. Depending on the event, the lines can get long, but it's almost always worth the wait. These tots are directly out of the fryer, warm, crunchy, and delicious. And while these tots would be great on their own, the Tot Cart also has a variety of toppings to up the taste factor. The toppings range from old bay to their famous drunk cheese sauce. My personal favorite is the G-Parm (a garlic-parmesan mixture) with bacon! The sizes are quite large and good for sharing. As a Best of Philly winner, you can't go wrong with the Tot Cart!!

Tried this out when they were in Haddonfield NJ for the food cart event! Definitely a wait but it wasn't too bad. I enjoyed the buffalo chicken tater tot! And the price is fair considering they are a food cart business after all!

    Tots! Beer cheese! Yum.
    Liz P.

Had the "New Bay" tots-- old bay tots with beer cheese. $6 may seem pricey for tater tots, but it was filling and delicious. And despite waiting in a long line, once I got to order I had my tots pretty much immediately, which I appreciated. They were so good. I think these would be great like, parked outside a bar at 12am, but as a workday treat for lunch it was also very satisfying.

    Out here serving the community!

The ordering system is fairly straightforward with screens at the entry showing the full menu, and further down 2 kiosks to place and pay for your order. If you order alcohol (margarita or beer), you need to present ID to the employees after placing the order. They run a very reasonable daily happy hour from 4-6pm! Today I tried the special (fish taco) and was blown away by how well the taco was cooked. The fish was tender, not overcooked, and very flavorful. The accompanying sauce, slaw, and other toppings were light and balanced the fish perfectly. I'm not a huge fan of fish tacos, but this one might convert me! I also ordered an old staple, the tuna dip, which was just like I remembered. My only disappointment was the margarita didn't come with the salt rim I ordered. As a fast casual concept, it's great for takeout for locals or tourists from the art museum area!

We ordered a Pulled Chicken composition and Philly Cheesesteak Sammy on the way out of the beer den after purchasing a 4-pack of home grown suds. While the Belgian Tripel went of $23, the amazingly tasty sliders were boxed expertly for $8 for a deuce, prepared the way you want it. Ample sauces, peppers, onions, relishes and melty cheese to beat the band. When we arrived home five minutes later, we broke open the grub and brew at the kitchen table and went off devouring the solids and guzzling the liquids. Really, the Stuff'd Bunz were terrific; plenty of flavors and textures to entertain the tastebuds, and leave you wanting more. Strong BBQ base under sours and sweets and crunchies, held together by something that reminded of a potato bun. Even the mock Cheesesteak was a big chew hoot and a half. Gooey cheese over finely chopped beef, with onion mixed in. Not the Prince of Steaks, but a damn good facsimile. Washed all that down with the expensive amber ale, and we were sated, if not poorer for the experience. When Covid is defeated, I look forward to hanging out at the bar and enjoying the wonderful repast to the fullest. Until then, takeaway is the only safe way to go.
