Torchys needs two different reviews - one for in person dining and one for take out. The food portion is significantly less when you get take out. A trailer Park taco with take out tonight had one small chicken strip. The same taco ordered dining in almost fills the basket. We like torchys, but just don't feel like we get our moneys worth when we order take out. read more

First time I've been to Torchy's - and yes, I've known for a while that it's a popular state-wide taco chain. And I can see the appeal - Texas has needed to expand beyond the traditional tacos for something more creative for a long time. And the verdict? They did a pretty good job. Maybe not amazing - and maybe Velvet Tacos does it better in Texas. But Velvet can't be everywhere. Torchy's can. Why? To be honest, I'm not sure since I thought the price points were similar between the two. What Torchy's have Velvet beat in though, is in its portions. Torchy's tacos are bigger, so you could say that you're getting a bigger bang for your buck here. So, to break my virginity with this place, I started off trying out two tacos - the Independent ($3.50) and the taco of the month, the South Pole ($5.50). The Independent consists of fried portobello mushroom strips with refried black beans, roasted corn, escabeche carrots, queso fresco, cilantro and avocado, drizzled with ancho aioli on a flour tortilla. Sounded heavenly, and it did taste good. The South Pole consists of shredded lamb (which unfortunately came out a bit too dry), avocado, fried onions, cotija cheese, cranberry habanero jam, cilantro, and Diablo sauce on a flour tortilla. Had it not come out too dry, I think I would have liked this much more - but it still provided a good melding of flavor in the mouth. As you can see, because the execution of the tacos can be a hit and a miss, based on just these two popular tacos, I can probably tell that there's less attention to its preparation than at Velvet. But this place still makes for some happy eats for those who are looking for a twist. I can see myself coming back, but I may be a bit more hesitant in ordering their more expensive menu offerings. As for the other stuff, and more traditional offerings (such as spiced elote corn, etc), why would anyone order them here in this city that's full of authentic and traditional Mexican places? I've been to Torchys before and their food is typically good. I walked in with my mind around 2 tacos I wanted (both vegetarian friendly). As I am ordering, the lady asks me what I'm trying to do and I suggest eliminate dairy. She sighs heavily and says OK I have to adjust all your tacos. She was helpful but with an attitude which was off-putting. So we find a place to sit and wait for our food and we see this food runner who should NOT be touching food. In fact, it really kind of grossed me out. He was wearing pajama pants, scratching himself and hair wasn't up but looked like he hadn't showered in months. I immediately was turned off and mumbled that if this guy delivers my food... xxx. He did, deliver it. He was friendly but I doubt he washed his hands after he scratched himself in multiple places. And I think it was the same guy I saw outside smoking when I got out of the car to head inside. The food was okay. The vegan versions weren't as good as the regular versions. Avocado and Portabella mushrooms were not fried as they are swiped with egg before battered. Cheese certainly helps the tacos and for these there was none. So my point is they have vegan options but I didn't think they were very good. 2 stars for the gross guy delivering our food and the attitude at the counter. I didn't ask or pay for your judgment. I've been to this location several times now and I can confidently say that this is the worst Torchy's in Dallas. The food is always cold, always. The Trailer Park chicken is dry and rubbery. The sliced avocados are brown. The pico de gallo is mushy. Nothing tastes fresh. To-go orders are consistently wrong or missing items. The interior of the restaurant smells like a daycare center. I can't think of a single positive thing to say about this location. Make the drive to Torchy's in Addison and compare for yourself. The difference is striking. read more

Honestly yesterday was just the last straw. I can't eat dairy (butter on something is fine but any significant amount I get very very Ill). I order it without cheese and sour cream. They mixed cheese into the burrito. They consistently get our orders wrong (they also forgot my wife's Avacado which they did charge us for). It's just never right and after a whole night up sick we don't need to go back when there's half a dozen places to get tacos within a mile of this place. They used to come check on the food or at least apologize when they got it wrong. They just remade it and dropped it on the table. Do better. read more

Dude, I love the food here but, trying to order to go is impossible. Usually I try to order on my way home from the gym (A 15-20 minute drive) and it takes me that long to put in my order. So by the time I get to torchy's I just finished the phone call. I've been forgotten about on hold. This isn't a bank, I don't want to hold for 30 minutes . Today I've called 5 times and was immediately put on hold for several minutes without anyone answering the phone. I tried to order on the very, VERY clunky website and it wouldn't take my information and said my order was "too large" aka 3 tacos and that it's going to take 25 minutes. We absolutely love torchys. However, this location is the absolute worst. They constantly mess up our orders and leave out food. We call them to correct the issue and they say they'll refund us, but I've never seen anything actually get refunded. I usually like coming although the food is not always consistent. Last night I ordered a green Chile pork taco with the corn tortilla slightly toasted. I got back a fried tostada?! I sent it back and they came to ask me what I meant. I tried explaining to essentially heat up the corn tortilla. Otherwise it tastes cold and bland and the texture is like cardboard if it's not heated to complement the pork meat. I got back a raw corn tortilla slightly heated. Gross! Luckily the chips and queso were really good and held me over for dinner. I give them 3 stars because they asked and tried again. However, our table was dirty and no one was around to clean it so I grabbed a towel and spray from their own cleaning station and wiped my own table and seat. This my roommate's and my go to place for quick and reliable tacos! Notable tacos worth trying would be the Baja shrimp and the Mr. Pink which both make up my usual order. Turns out my friend also ended up ordering the same thing by coincidence. Two tacos are large and very filling. Food comes out fast and the employees were friendly! One of my favorite Taco places (because they have lots of vegetarian choices). I always, always get their Fried Avocado taco. The avocado comes out crispy and delicious! Add in some of that white sauce they give on the side, and it is so good! I also love their breakfast tacos (I always get the Migas). Torchy's takes a fun approach towards creating an assortment of taco's such as the Trailer Park and The Fried avocado taco. Torchy's also has a full bar and is a good spot to watch sports. First day opening, they were super busy! Started off with the chips and queso, so good!! With those bottomless chips.. Made a mistake and filled up on those without knowing. For the tacos I got the fried avocado taco and the Brush Fire ( jerk chicken! ) I think I can skip out on the fried avocado next time, too much bean paste for my liking but that jerk chicken is so good!
