We were actually headed somewhere else for dinner when I remembered hearing a podcast interview with the founder of Torchy's Tacos. So we changed plans. That turned out to be one of the better decisions of the day. We started with the queso, which set the tone immediately. Creamy, velvety, and carrying just enough heat to get your attention without lighting your mouth on fire. Paired with well-salted chips, it was the kind of appetizer that has you saying, "Just one more chip" about fifteen times. For tacos, my wife and I accidentally ordered the exact same thing. Great minds. First was the Republican: smoked brisket, barbecue sauce, grilled corn, crispy onions, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. The brisket was tender, smoky, and packed with flavor... I don't care about your political views (they also have a Democrat on the menu)... this taco wins in a landslide... a mandate! Then came the Trailer Park, ordered "trashy," which means they ditch the lettuce and add queso. Trust me. Go trashy. Fried chicken, green chiles, pico, mixed cheese, poblano sauce, and queso all working together in a way that makes you wonder why anyone would eat a boring taco. The best review came from my wife. Halfway through the first taco she declared, "Five stars." After the second taco? "Definitely." Hard to argue with that. Great food, fun atmosphere, a cool concept, and one of the more memorable taco experiences we've had in a long time. Five stars. And yes, we'll be back. Delicious Mexican food with thick, fresh tortillas. I got a breakfast burrito and was so happy with the generous fillings which were perfectly layered, especially the beans, which I usually don't get with a breakfast burrito but were phenomenal! My only small issue was that I had rewrap the burrito as it wasn't fully wrapped but this was minor and didn't change how good the taste was! After hearing about torchys a ton from friends who loved their texas chain, I'm glad I had a chance to try it! Ordering at kiosks is easy and they are relatively quick with your order. read more

The fried avocado taco was my favorite while my boyfriend's favorite by far was the green chili taco! Highly recommend this place it's a must try. I will say the tacos themselves are a bit pricey. Had three different tacos. Trailer park trashy style, chicken fajita no tomatillo, and grilled Baja shrimp but plain. The trailer park trashy was the best one. The fried chicken cooked well, and the sauce added a depth of flavor. It was also very filling. Chicken fajita was okay. Good flavor. Lastly, the shrimp taco needed the other toppings because the shrimp didn't have much flavor by itself. The corn tortilla did hold up really well though, which was a plus. I was looking for tacos since I was in the area and this place was the closest and got 4.5 stars . It's a cool joint with a small bar on the right and a little kiosk screen in the front . They have a wide variety of tacos and other dishes . Most are around 5.40 each . I got the trailer park and chicken fajita . Both were a good size and two were good for me , tho I could have eaten another one . Trailer park was supposed to be flame scale of 3 but wasn't very hot TBO. Even tho it had a hot sauce on top .Was still very good and the chicken fajita had fried chicken with various toppings . Lettuce tomato fried onions and other veggies . Having lived in Texas for several years, I was absolutely ecstatic to hear that Torchy's was coming to Nashville! These were my go-to tacos in college, and a visit to this new location in Midtown was just the nostalgia my tastebuds needed. My husband and I stopped in for an early lunch around 11 a.m. This is a high foot-traffic area, but we still managed to find some cheap street parking a short walk away. The restaurant has fun new decor inside, and a colorful mural on the outside of the building. I was hoping they'd have patio seating, but they still managed to make the most of their space with some large, open window cut-outs. I ordered two of my favorites - the Fried Avocado and the Democrat. My husband went with the Trailer Park and the Brushfire. For some reason, these tacos seemed bigger than I remembered? Either way, everything was delicious, and we paired our tacos with some chips and guac and a house margarita. The service was some of the best I've seen at any Torchy's! We had team members check in on us multiple times while eating - which is rare to find at a counter-service restaurant. I can't wait to chow down on even more damn good tacos soon! read more

So I finally ate at Torchy's Tacos, which, if you haven't heard, is from Austin, Texas -- land of breakfast tacos, live music, and people who say "keep it weird" while charging you $18 for a margarita. Everyone talks about Torchy's like it's a taco cathedral. "Life-changing," they said. "Authentic," they said. What they didn't say is that it might also be a social experiment in how little meat a human will tolerate before snapping. Let's start with the chicken fajita taco. Beautiful presentation, sure -- like a salad bar exploded in a tortilla. But it was 90% toppings and 10% chicken, and I'm rounding up out of pity. Then came The Democrat, which was so greasy I considered reporting it to the EPA. I made it halfway through before my arteries staged a coup. The margarita was delicious -- crisp, limey, refreshing -- in the same way that a snow cone is refreshing. Because it was 90% ice. If the glass were any smaller, it would qualify as a shot. Now, credit where it's due: I ordered a half order of chips and salsa, and it was excellent. Fresh, flavorful, and crunchy enough to make you forget the taco disappointment -- briefly. And huge thumbs-up to any place that lets you get a half order of anything. I suspect you can even do the same with queso, which is basically like saying, "Hey, we trust you to manage your own cheese intake." That's freedom, right there. But overall? Not worth it. The tacos are skimpy, the Democrat's still drilling for oil, and the place was not exactly the kind of clean where you'd want to drop a napkin and pick it back up. Between Velvet Taco and Little Rey's, Torchy's feels like the overpriced middle child of taco culture -- trying hard but not invited to the cool parties. Pro tip: Order the chips. When visiting Nashville, tacos wasn't the first thing on my mind when it comes to eats but lo and behold, Torchy's Tacos blew me away with their delicious take on tacos with a Nashville twist. It went downhill with first impressions when I called to ask about parking- the first call answer was clearly annoyed when she answered the phone from the start and when I asked if their location had parking she immediately hung up. The second call went to an off property order taker who then blind transferee me to the store. When I did arrive the parking lot was full which would not have really mattered as they validate for 45 minutes which is very little time when you have to wait in line to order then have a longer wait for your food- this is clearly a trick to get more parking revenue The taco was decent but $6 dollar price point is questionable especially when even the chips and salsa are also spendy. I had some free taco vouchers from a grand opening marketing event but overall don't see how with poor parking and staff who hang up on guests this place has a chance. read more

As former Texans, we were thrilled to hear that Nashville was getting its very own Torchy's. We got all our favorites this last time heading into the midtown location, including The Democrat (beef barbacoa), Fried Avocado, and the Hogfather. We opted for the queso tater-tots this time around as an appetizer, and I think this was a mistake: you get much more queso in their original with the option of unlimited chips. The queso coverage was not great for the tots. Management is brand new as is the store, so everything was sparkly and fresh. They are so family friendly, and we were about the fifth young family in there with a high chair for lunch time alone. And yet, the store was still so clean! Staff is so on top of things. We got served within minutes of ordering at the front, and everyone was perfectly friendly. Parking can be a bit difficult in this area, so I recommend parking a bit farther on the free streets near 19th and walking (or just prepare to shell out a little bit for parking). We had the chance to try the new Nashville Torchy's this evening. I fell in love with Torchy's on a recent trip to Texas, and I was so excited to hear they were coming to Nashville. They were quite busy on a Saturday evening, but the line to place your order moved reasonably fast. We tried the Trailer Park, Baja Shrimp, and Republican tacos, as well as the salsa, guacamole, and Torchy's famous queso. I love the guacamole and green chilis in the queso, and it's great that they are happy to supply you with fresh chips when you're ready for a refill. Everything was a hit! I've been to Torchy's a thousand times over in Texas prior to moving to Nashville, and my first time in on the opening date reminded me so much of home, and made my heart and stomach smile because the food tastes exactly the same! I brought 2 of my friends with me to have them try it for the first time and they loved it as well! The portions are pretty big for a taco, which is helpful because the cost/taco is a touch on the higher end. We got the brushfire, trailer park trashy, and chicken fajita, 2 full orders of the green chile queso, and 2 margaritas- one wild berry strawberry swirl, and one passion fruit wild berry swirl. The drinks were a decent size, and it being happy hour was extremely helpful! The jerk chicken on the brushfire tacos was flavorful, and the diablo sauce definitely kicks up the heat (use sparingly!!). I advise you mix the queso up with a chip and go crazy from there, it's some of the best queso I've ever had. There's a touch of spice from the diablo sauce, creaminess from the Guac, and texture from the Chile's and cojita cheese. Literally a chefs kiss. I'd also suggest you sign up for the rewards program to earn free tacos! The staff was friendly and able to give suggestions based on your palate. When she is here, she's constantly running her fingers through her hair or has them in her pants.. the one refill I got, was the wrong drink.
