A time was has at Topside Tavern. A large group came to watch an NBA Playoff game and we had a great experience. Sat at the bar and the serving staff were phenomenal. Fun, interactive, and crafted darn good cocktails. Drinks are very affordable. Some of the best prices I've seen downtown. The menu is extensive and caters to just about everyone's preferences. Most of the group had sandwiches and fries. From the Ludlaw burger to the soft shell crab sandwich, plates were empty. There's also a rooftop that was packed to brim. We didn't go up there but I'm assuming it's pretty popular. There are TVs everywhere so it's also a great place to watch sporting events. read more

After watching Topside Tavern replace the unsightly remains of whatever was there before (the building was empty when I moved to Philly), I decided to give it a try for lunch one day with a buddy of mine. I will say the the restaurant is much more pleasing to the eyes than before, with a beautiful stone facade and a tastefully decorated, all new interior. The space felt smallish, exacerbated by what seemed like too many tables that made it feel a bit crowded. Nevertheless, the place has a nice, cozy atmosphere. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by the friendly host and seated right away. The restaurant wasn't too crowded at lunchtime, which I had expected from passing by it often. (I have noticed that it seems to have a nice happy hour crowd.) Our waiter was friendly and efficient. The menu is American faire, with plenty of tasty looking options for all of the courses. For lunch, I opted for a cheeseburger and truffle fries, which had a sprinkling of fresh parmesan cheese on top. Delicious! My buddy had the Half Grilled Cornish Game Hen, which he said tasted as good as it looked. All in all, if you're in the Rittenhouse area, Topside Tavern is a nice choice for a tasty meal. Topside is SO cute! Stopped through later in the evening to grab cocktails and tried a new spot which did not disappoint. We were welcomed by a reeeally nice host who let us know they have a upstairs outside bar area where you can eat as well. If the weather isn't horrible, their second floor is worth a vibe. The food was good. The drinks were a little watered and the waitress was slowwww. Won't fault them for that so I'll definitely be back. AND after 10pm (I think) they crank the music up with a DJ for the party folks. read more

The breakfast was good but I should have tried the duck andouille sausage. It was very busy I think there may have been only 1-2 free seats on the lower level! Came here on a Saturday afternoon at noon after the rocky marathon. Place was busy but there was zero atmosphere. It was the prettiest day of the year in Philly and they had the rooftop closed due to "wet seat cushions." The downstairs had every TV off and piano music was playing. They were very understaffed with three females who seemed to not know what they were doing. I asked to turn college football on the TVs and they turned on soccer. Newer lively spot with a nice open atmosphere and lots of TVs to watch sports on. They also have a rooftop patio section. Drink menu has a decent amount of selections and cocktails are fairly priced. The Topside Tavern serves brunch every Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm. They also have a jazz trio at noon. Gerson was very friendly and helpful. We tried the Good Morning Good Night breakfast pizza and the Ranchero Skillet. Both were delicious. There are so many great options on the menu that it was hard to decide. We had the Ridiculous Bread Pudding for dessert. Their regular menu also had tons of great options. They have a full bar and also serve Coke products. Great atmosphere and service. I had a fantastic experience at Topside. I had the 20th & Ludlow Smashed Burger, which was excellent, and some fries on the side. We sat on the rooftop, which had a relaxing and pretty atmosphere. Our service was fantastic, as we visited with a service dog who was promptly given a bowl of water and was loved by staff and patrons alike. Our server was awesome and all of the staff was very friendly. I highly recommend for a chill night of drinks and dinner. read more

This place is awful. Downstairs has the ambiance of an airport terminal restaurant. Upstairs on two different occasions they've been out of multiple draft beer options at prime times (eg 9pm on a Saturday night). Last night the bartender upstairs seemed like he didn't even know what beer was: he tried to tell me that the Troegs Oktoberfest was an IPA, and then what he served me was actually a Modelo, which he had said was out. Food is decent but portions tend to be small which makes it a bit overpriced. Honestly recommend Devil's Alley or even Bonners if you're looking for a decent beer selection. The whole thing is especially disappointing because when they opened they were supposed to be a beer bottle shop but they ended up firing the guy who was going to run that part of it. read more

This review is based on dining on the rooftop. There are very few places to dine outside in center city and I was impressed with the outdoor set-up of Topside Tavern. Our waiter did his best to be very accomodating to us allowing me to sample a drink I wasn't sure of prior to selecting it. It is a relatively small menu and prices seemed a bit high to me for a tavern but there was a nice selection of items offered. I was disappointed that they were out of two of the items on the menu that we tried to order. We had the hummus platter which was tasty and a good appetizer. I recently visited this restaurant with a large group for lunch and unfortunately, the experience didn't quite hit the mark. I ordered the crab cakes, but they had a strong smell that made me think twice, so I ended up skipping them. The tacos seemed to be a hit, otherwise I noticed there was a lot of untouched food on folk's plates. Beyond the food, the timing was an issue where some dishes came out so late we were literally paying the check as the food showed up. newer neighborhood restaurant with delicious food and a cute rooftop! i was excited to check out this restaurant since it is very close to where i live, and the food did not disappoint! we ordered the melting pot bao buns to start which were extremely juicy and flavorful. for my main, i had the SOMA jam burger which was the perfect combination of flavors. every bite here was absolutely delightful, no complaints about the food whatsoever! the only reason i cannot give this spot 5 stars is because the service was terrible. we were seated on the rooftop and then completely neglected for the entirety of our meal. the only times we saw our server was when he was dropping off our food. he never checked in on us, and our water was never refilled. we sat with empty cups for most of our meal before we tried unsuccessfully to flag our server down twice. perhaps the service would be better for the indoor seating... it's a shame because the food was so good. read more

Easter brunch reservations at 12 noon on rooftop. Great Sunday morning brunch, had reservations. We were not rushed at all which was appreciated on this particular Sunday. Sat immediately and given opportunity to review menu. Food came out in a timely manner. Would absolutely visit again. When we left there was a 3 piece band playing light jazz on the first floor. We walked in with a large running group. We sat in the rooftop bar and were told we couldn't sit at the tables in the middle. We were here for 2+ hours and 2 out of the 4 tables were open. We were also told that they couldn't split our tab, but other people in our group were able to open/close their tabs. Lastly, the waitress working this evening doesn't check in on the tables. My husband had to run around, and attempted to order food from her 3 different times. Would not recommend this business. read more

I want to preface this by saying I never leave reviews. Ambiance: I saw another Yelper say it has the ambiance of an airport terminal restaurant and I could not agree more. Really just no vibe at all. Food: Below average on all accounts. We started with calamari and brussel sprouts, both of which were scantily portioned and forgettable. I got the salmon for my main dish. Again, very small portion and not very good. My friend got the "carne asada" tacos. The meat on them was akin to meat one would find from a frozen cheesesteak meal, and may have even tasted worse somehow. Drinks: The drinks were good. A few members of our party got a few cocktails and had nothing but positive things to say. Service: This is my biggest gripe. For the price point of this place (which isn't that great to begin with), the lackluster food and general vibes could MAYBE be justified, but bad service is just never excusable. Our waitress the entire night was impossible to get a hold of, and when we finally could get her attention we were greeted with attitude. There was one point where we hadn't seen her for about 20 minutes. I flagged her down, made eye contact with her, and she basically acted like she didn't see me and we didn't see her for another 10 minutes thereafter. When the check finally came, we were charged for two Malbec's as opposed to two house red wines, which totaled to $8 more. Given it probably would've been a 20 minute ordeal to remedy the situation and we quite literally couldn't wait to get out of there, we just paid for it. Just generally speaking, everyone working seemed annoyed to be there. Not to mention the bathrooms were filthy and there was just miscellaneous cleaning supplies sitting outside their doors. I am genuinely baffled how this place has so many positive reviews. Maybe we caught them on an on off night, but even if all the aforementioned aspects of the restaurant were improved a full tier, I wouldn't even think about returning and would tell others to steer clear. read more

So when I saw on Fox29 that they were having a $50 3 course price menu for Christmas, had to go. My first visit to Topside Tavern was for a restaurant week lunch. They had a great deal for the $20 price point. I started out with a crabcake appetizer and then had a soft shell crab sandwich. You aren't going to find that combination on any other restaurant week menu. The two small crab cakes did have filler, but were still very good. The soft shell crab was delicious, on a soft brioche bun. It wasn't the most meaty soft shell crab, but still made for quite the tasty sandwich. The restaurant was packed, so I sat at the bar but I still managed to get good service from the bartender who was also the waitress for the tables. Another woman sitting at the bar was raving about the burger and I noticed that burgers are half price during happy hour. I was so happy with my lunch that I knew what I had to do! A week later I was back for happy hour. It wasn't long before I was sipping on an old fashioned and trying the burger. It was a smash burger with cooper sharp cheese and bacon. The burger was as juicy as a smash burger can get, and it was on the same soft brioche bun as the soft shell crab sandwich. Cooper sharp may be my new favorite cheese on a burger, and you can never go wrong with bacon. It was a top tier burger and a great deal at half off. Happy Hour does end at 6, so make sure you get there quickly after work and put in the order. Topside Tavern is now a part of my happy hour rotation. read more

The rooftop was fairly nice although I would make a recommendation that the business should consider wiping down the railings more frequently (they were a tad gross). The service was pretty slow and lackluster and I didn't get my drink for at least 25 minutes and they didn't have my first option and it took a while to order. No comment on the food because we didn't get any. The prices err on the more expensive side like other businesses opening up in cc which is unfortunate. Recently visited Topside Tavern and was initially thrown off by the experience downstairs. The lower-level seating area was completely empty, and the bartender seemed uninterested and disengaged. After an awkward moment of eye contact, I approached and asked if seating was available--his short, dismissive replies ("yup" and "doesn't matter") left a bad first impression. Owners, take note: first impressions matter, and this interaction didn't set the right tone. Thankfully, things turned around upstairs. Was finally seated by who appeared to be the owner or manager--very welcoming and professional. Service was on the slower side, but the food made up for it. Topside Tavern is a newer addition to the area and provides fantastic food with a nice variety of beverages available. I'd assume it's probably more busy during the week when workers are around because we visited on a Saturday around 5pm and had no problem getting seated immediately. The bao buns were soft, flavorful and unique! The grilled chicken sandwich had a tasty pineapple barbecue sauce that you could actually taste the sweet pineapple flavor which wasn't overpowering. The inside ambiance is pretty modern and new looking, but the bathroom missed the mark - the toilet is black and shows water spots. Met some friends here while in Philadelphia, it was an easy walk from Amtrak and had a very nice rooftop situation. There's not like a crazy view or anything (although we did view some crazy down below!), but it was nice to be outside in downtown for drinks and early dinner. Cocktails were really good- we had a mezcal based one that was killer. I would describe the food as an upgraded American bar menu. That's a good thing to me! Plenty of options and easy, comfort food that can be shared if you'd like. I get a burger that was worth it! My friends had the mac and cheese and the Mediterranean plate, they enjoyed it. We were very excited to see a new restaurant occupy the space where farmers keep used to be, as it is prime real estate for either post-work drinks or a casual dinner out. The space is also well utilized with the downstairs bar/dining room complemented by the upstairs, open top dining area. When we arrived at 6:15, it was quit busy but we were seated immediately. We waited a few minutes for a server but we chalk that up to the busy atmosphere and the staff getting used to the swing of things. We ordered some beers, the Brussels sprouts, the shrimp katsu Sando and the jam burger and everything was delicious--no surprise to fans of Thanal Indian Tavern. The menu had many other options that were exciting, so we definitely plan on coming back.
