Not to mention the selection that they have of locally-grown and organic foods that you'd be hard-pressed to get elsewhere from our local grocery stores. Where the local Price Choppers (yes, it's a chain, and yes there's two of them very nearby) only seem to have low-enough prices from a sale or completely by accident, Hannaford is much more consistent in this category. Hannaford also beats "P.C." with fully stocked shelves at most times of day--something that can never be said about the latter--and in a very good attempt at keeping up with the changing, more eco & health-friendly, times they also have a fifth of the store dedicated to cultural foods and organic. Woot! The one feature of the store that could use some improvement would be the checkout experience. While there's rarely a 16 year old kid constantly yammering away to their friends about the weekend (hey, I did say RARELY) like the other place where you may just happen to catch eye contact if you pay close attention before being given your total, there are physically far too few register lanes to keep up with the maddening grocery rush between the hours of 3 and 5pm most evenings, but in Hannaford's defense they haven't had the front-end updated since they were Shop n' Save quite a few years ago as far as I've witnessed anyway. If by some chance you didn't catch it, I'm not a fan of Price Chopper. I used to be when it was a quaint little supermarket, but then it went all giganto and the quality dropped off the face of the earth (or at least the face of FulCo).

Both, of course, are supermarkets with a great variety of groceries that you'd expect. Historically, Price Chopper would be the ones with better deals and promotions vs. Hannaford's everyday prices. Before the Fuel AdvantEDGE program where you can save on gas at Sunoco, Price Chopper was the home of promotions where you could earn stamps for free towels or cookware. Today, of course, the world is more complicated with Walmart selling groceries, discount chains like Aldi, and even home delivery options. Through all of that, though, I have to say that I get drawn in by the deals at Price Chopper. Beyond their approach to pricing, I have always encouraged friendly, knowledgeable staff. I will say that when you are looking for niche products, such as Lundburg brand rice, vegan Annie's shells, raw cashews, and Worcestershire sauce without anchovies, that Price Chopper has came up short and I've had to drive over to Hannaford. Likewise, their switch from 24 hours to 6am-Midnight a couple years back now means that Walmart is the only option for late night groceries. Still, I know that I can get good grocery deals by shopping the Price Chopper circular and that's what keeps me coming back week after week.

When I'm out and about, it's not always easy to get there so early so it's a bummer when you are intent on something specific. I really like their fruit tarts too. They come individual sized, as well as a standard pie size. It's the perfect bite after a meal or whenever as it's not too sweet and it's quite good. Lastly, the shop is always nicely organized and the staff is helpful. All this makes for a regularly pleasant shopping experience.

Made the best Chimichurri tacos on the grill tonight courtesy of Fresh Markets meat counter and their amazing marinade!! So glad the gentlemen at the meat counter were so prompt and helpful while I was making my selections. I will definitely return for the meat counter. It was my husbands birthday, so I also grabbed a cake and some desserts for the fam -- the cakes are about what you would pay at Price Chopper, but in my opinion, they appear to be made with more attention to detail. If you're having a hard time finding birthday candles with numbers, they have a huge selection next to the cake counter and some Birthday cake pieces as well. The way to shop at this store is by learning the regular sale days. Tuesdays deals are: $5.00 12 inch pizza $3.99/lb Chicken Breast $5.99/lb ground beef $5.00 rotisserie chicken Fridays deals are: 2 for $5 burgers Each week they choose a different fresh deal, so you'll likely find a deal for $5.00/lb meat. This evening it was carne asada chicken breast cutlets. Other elements that I really enjoy is that their olive bar has Dolmas!! It's the only one that I know of that carries them in the area. Never realized how difficult it is to find specialty food until I moved back to Saratoga from Texas. Plus, my kiddos love going with me for the candy by the pound jars -- they really love getting to make their own selection and mix. While I do find the market to have steeper prices, I do enjoy the convenience, but I have to shop the deals.

I'm reviewing Charlie John's as a Bookstore-Café. Because there's one little table in the back by the deli, and we had (seriously) a delightful time there after a few dozen banal visits for groceries and supplies. First off, the made to order sandwiches -- we got egg salad and tuna salad -- are quite good. The Broccoli salad was as good a one as I've ever had, although I suspect that was because there were little bits of ham in it we didn't notice until after we started eating it (we are not dogmatic vegetarians, and occasionally fall off the wagon anyway). The deli staff were extremely pleasant, and I don't mean this as a knock on any particular establishment, but during the busy summer season that really stands out among other more harried employees of some businesses I shan't mention. And then we had the added pleasure of being able to talk directly to a half dozen patrons, as we were blocking the access to pork roll, ground turkey, and littleneck clams from our perch at the sole table. Second: the bookstore. CJ's has a half a row of books in the camping section, plus another stub for maps and guidebooks, and honestly, I think I've been in every bookstore in the ADK, I think this has the best-curated books of local interest. They have some truly small-press low-print-run titles here, from a biography of Nick Stoner to a history of the Moose Plains Wilderness. It's fun just to browse and while you can't buy everything, we always make it a point to buy something. That's when it occurred to me: we were having as enjoyable a time as we have at bookstore cafés. I mean, this sure beats Barnes and Noble. So having not bothered to review Charlie John's before -- what else is there to say about the best small grocery store in the ADK that hasn't been said in other reviews -- and convey to you that you now have a secret rainy day destination.
