Well, it seems that my negative review was suddenly "tagged"? This was from a year ago at least...omg. Tops Penfield is not managed at all well. Cashiers are either not trained well or are not competent. Management is terrible and seem to be lazy and abusive to the lower level employees. This is the best Tops market I've ever been to!! I was in the one in Penfield rd! It was amazing! It was clean, well organized and so many different food options! The layout of the store was great! I did purchase some Broccoli Cheddar soup for lunch along with my groceries and the price for a large soup was pretty decent and the soup delicious! They have self check out and well as regular check out and they wasn't a line for either! I also noticed a lot of staff stocking and arranging shelves. It is a shame that there are only two market places in town because I don't always want to go to Wegman's We have Aldi's, Shop Rite down state there's more choices probably 15 to 20 more. Anyway, beware in tops or Wegman's check your receipt because what is on sale is not automatically deducted at check out. Their excuse was, it was probable a different Item and told me customer service was close but after showing her the pic she refunded me $2.00 it may not seem much but it adds up. Fried chicken is 5 stars you can pick it up prebagged I hear if you get there early in the day. You can also order it to be made fresh. There was one and maybe two staff on who were pleasant and helpful but busy. The macaroni and potato salads are on the hard side and a bit flavorless. read more

I stopped at tops today because I didn't feel like dealing with all the customers at Wegmans on my way home because I just needed a couple things that shouldn't have been a problem. So I got my poppy seed Marie's dressing that Wegmans doesn't sell anymore. :-( So then I proceeded to look for the Hostess chocolate cupcakes and they were completely out of them but they had plenty of orange ones of which I don't know who eats. Evidently nobody. So then I moved on to the cookies and I did find some raisin oatmeal cookies that appeared to have satisfied my sweet tooth. So I thought to balance that I should probably have a salad. So I purchased a premade salad.. That when I got home I had to pull all the shredded what look like chicken out of it. While I was still in the fruits and vegetable Department I decided to get some apples and I wanted something that would taste good so I bought some delicious apples. Well they weren't very delicious when I got them home and cut them open and found Brown through half of them like they were rotted inside and you couldn't tell anything from the outside. So we have a wild rabbit that my fiance feeds on her way to work every morning so I guess he will be the benefactor of all the new delicious apples I hope he doesn't mind the rot in them? I also purchase some bananas that I thought weren't too bad till I got home and compare them to the bananas that I purchased at Wegmans last Sunday. Obvious difference. Then I proceeded to look for the lobster tails they had advertised for $7 a piece on the radio ad I'm assuming for Valentine's Day? and I couldn't find those particularly but I did find a pair for $15 that were only 5 oz each? I mean that's like a mouthful. So I passed on those. I did find my fiance is dairy free Cherry Garcia ice cream and then proceeded to the checkout as I had enough. LOL So I came home and had some pizza and one of the worst salad I ever ate and a couple cookies that weren't bad and then decided to have an apple that I will never purchase again at tops. I think I'll stick to their canned goods. There is a reason Wegmans is who they are and why you pay more. read more

I was in the Tops at 1601 Penfield road, Rochester NY 14625. On Wednesday May 12, 2021 around 1:30 in the afternoon. I was walking down the card aisle and a mouse crossed my path. NICE surprise, when I mentioned this to the cashier TOM he didn't give shit, no apologies or concern. Then asked him about the lucky token he had no clue what I was talking about. He gave me no help, ignored my questions. Very rude and unprofessional. I will not be returning back to that store ever. read more

Tops gets a lot of abuse in the Rochester market. If you have a teenager living in your house you've probably heard them sing "Tops never Mops, look at their floors..." Having said that, if Wegmans wasn't around we'd probably survive. I go to Tops to find products that Wegmans doesn't sell. Which, surprisingly, adds up to a lot of items. Wegmans likes to sell items that it brands. That means no Entemann's cakes or other commercially baked goods. That alone makes Tops a worthy stop on your shopping excursion. The Panorama Tops is still going strong after all these years. Not the fanciest store, but it will do. read more

The sushi looked anything but fresh, the sandwiches were disheveled and the cheese was discolored on the edges from sitting there for who knows how long. I want to give this store a high mark, and go there as a competitor for Wegmans... But I can't. Went in the store last night and it smelled awful. Read a few other reviews also mentioning sanitary issues. This is terrible. We all like Wegmans but they need to have viable competitors. How can Tops allow the entire interior of the store, a large store with a substantial selection, to smell like a fish-laden sewage drain. And it was in the evening when the seafood area seemed to be closed. THE WORST PART: When I arrived, I was disappointed in the small number of vehicles there for 7pm. Literally about ten at best. Besides the above complaint, there is another huge problem: THE PARKING LOT. It is a pothole DISASTER. If you have an older car, or any concerns about your exhaust system being wrecked by poor pavement, you'll want to stay as far away from here as possible. I had to drive VERY slowly and EVEN THEN I still bottomed out several times, unable to see just how bad the pavement was. Come on Tops. I'll give ya an "out" for it being the end of winter. You MUST repave the lot (or have the plaza owners do it, whomever is responsible for it). No one should have to feel like they're driving through a post-apocalyptic disaster zone concerned about damaging their car. Not a single Wegmans lot has anything remotely as bad as this. Positives: The store is large, large selection, has a good layout. They carry some items Wegmans does not, that we need, and will buy there if we don't have to deal with pavement craters and stank. Every time I come here, I say I'll never come here again. I had an issue with the sub shop a few months ago, and I will never, ever order a sub here again! In any case, they always charge you incorrectly, the prices are high, the lines are long, and they're always out of stuff. Well I had to go to Staples, so Tops was nearby, so I stopped here for a few things. Pepsi was 5 for $5, so I got 5 of them. I got some other things and headed to the register to cash out. When I got my receipt, 4 Pepsi's were listed at the top at 4 for $7.96, and another in the middle of the receipt was listed for $2.00. I stared at this receipt to see what I was missing, and it looked like I was charged $9.96 for them. Fortunately it wasn't busy in the store, so I walked up to the service desk, and the person working there also stared at my receipt. She eventually saw that at the bottom of the receipt they took off another discount of $4.95. So she did figure it out, and that made my 5 Pepsi's $5, like they were supposed to be, BUT WHY ARE THEIR RECEIPTS SO HARD TO READ!?!?! I didn't even buy very much, and these 5 Pepsi's were all over my receipt in different places. And yes, I sat them all on the counter together. I shouldn't need to go to the service desk every time I come here, and I don't remember the last time I haven't. I really hope to never come here again. read more

We moved here to "upstate" about 3 months ago from Long Island. I tried going to Wegman's but find the store way too overwhelming for me. I love shopping but could never get used to the pure size of Wegmans. I have shopped in Shop Rite, downstate, for 40+ years. Shop Rite is not perfect but I found grocery shopping there comfortable. I am happy I found a TOPs about 3 miles from me and found it more to my liking. The added bonus is that there is an Aldi right down the road from TOPs. I am a fan of Aldi's. I like Tops stores for certain items and for the varieties and sometimes the cheaper prices. However the one thing that makes me hesitant is the smell in the enter. Is it the carpet? No stars from me! This Tops has become nothing but, a Junk Store! For the past month and a half, they are out of just about everything! So, I mentioned it to the Cashier, it's like he didn't even hear me, was ignored! I talked to a Manager, she claimed she was busy, and asked another woman listen to my complaint! While I was telling them, that I spend a lot of money in this store, and other stores have products in I was told these things have been ordered, and the Distributer was not getting the orders to the store. I always thought a Manager's job was to keep a business running smoothly, if they are having a problem with this Distributer, I would think it would make sense to change Distributer's! It's not like they are the only Distributer in the area, but, no, they keep the same one, making the customer not getting what they need, and forcing the Customer to pay more money in buying twice as much in smaller bags! This, is not Acceptable!!!! Also, when you talk to a manager they should at the very least, pretend to care about a Customer's Complaint, not humor them! I may have to go a little further, to shop at another store, but, I AM DONE WITH THIS STORE!!! My opinion! read more

Prices high for old vegetables. Today it was $1.99/lb for Brussels sprouts. Normally $3.99/lb. sprouts were yellowing; leaves were wilted and the pinch test yielded mushy old veg. Every time I've stopped there I find the same thing. That would be fine if they were priced as "seconds" but that's not the case. Try Aldi's for fresh vegs be wegmans for fresh vegs. I love Tops in Panorama plaza. I'll put that right out there. But I do most of my grocery shopping at 9:00 at night after the kiddos are asleep so my experience might be different than yours. Why do I love it? I always find what I'm shopping for, everything I buy always seems to be on sale and everyone working the evening shift is friendly. I rarely buy prepared foods, but I do buy produce and it's usually good. I buy fresh meat and it's always good. I used to buy donuts and they were amazing. I get everything I need from my experiences at Tops and spend quite a bit less than I would at Wegs, so 5 stars all day. read more

For MOST of this store, they have a fairly decent collection of stuff, albiet kinda haphazardly located. Prices are good, but BEWARE of the fish department. My partner went on Saturday to get some salmon. They were out, so he asked the fish-mongrette behind the counter. She said that she'd sold 50 lbs since yesterday, and the only salmon left was the marinated salmon. My partner looked at it, and asked how long it had been marinating. "I made it fresh on Wednesday", she said. Seriously. They are selling 3-day-old fish. That ALONE is enough to keep either of us from patronizing them again! I really like all the changes that are going on at TOPs. The store looks a lot less clinical/sterile and much "warmer". Every time I go there I have not only seen a change in the staff but the customers, everyone walks with their heads held up a little higher. I really hope that the future holds good things for this store because I can really see a great effort from their headquarters. read more

I don't come to tops often because I prefer Wegmans. I feel that they are expensive and I don't care for their brand of items. They do carry some items that Wegmans doesn't carry. I feel like the store is dirty. Cleaning the floors is something so simple that can make such a huge change in a store. If I need something Wegmans does have or if it is the only close grocery store I will come back but I don't come here often for a reason. read more

Horrible service at tops. Our Doctors office ordered a sheet pizza. Normally a sheet pizza fills an entire box. We received a sheet box with only half of the box full with pizza that was mostly crust. This "sheet pizza" costs 27$. We called to get another pizza since that small sheet wouldn't feed our office and we were told that is there is nothing they can do that is their sheet. Don't order your pizza from tops! read more

As a 23 year old ex retail employee I always go out of my way to be extremely thankful and nice to employees I come across. There are some very helpful people here. However every visit someone ruins it. Whether it is the tall older blonde lady at the customer service desk who acts like I am spitting in her face when I kindly ask for a money order to pay my rent. Or like tonight I bought Gatorade, lunchmeat, and a 6 pack of molson. I show the cashier my OHIO ID as I just moved to Rochester. She says no prob let me get the front end manager. Who calls the on duty lead I'm assuming. This is happening because it seems this is standard practice when a out of state ID is presented. He calls and say" I guess she doesn't want to look at it" so I say oh cool okay. He says " no sorry she denied it". I respond " so she just didn't want to walk up here from the back" both cashier and front end guy stutter knowing this is the case. I pull out my birth certificate and at this point and they both give each other the nod and give me my beer. Luckily this store has a handful of lower level staff willing to pick up slack for the lazy, miserable folks here. Otherwise when I need just a few things I would drive the extra 10 mins to wegmans instead of tops. If I'm restocking the fridge though, I'm going to wegmans every time. Like many others, I come to Tops for a cheaper alternative to Wegmans. I usually have a great experience at every other Tops but this location in particular is just disgusting. The produce all looked very old, my cucumbers rotted within a week and they didn't have ANY cilantro! read more

The store was clean. Friendly service but some prices were not that good. They have deals but it depends what it is.

Manager needs to train staff in Carryout Cafe to handle Friday Fish Fry orders more efficiently. Manager doesn't listen to customer feedback, preferring to talk and move on. He should be retrained to provide better customer service. read more
