We had a large group with a reservation. We didn't just show up. The restaurant didn't plan that out very well. We had ONE server. Everything took forever. Getting drinks, getting food and even paying the tickets. The food was amazing as always...just aggravated that everything took so long and it all could've been fixed by adding another server or two. This place is delicious! Definitely one of my favorite places in Hammond so far. They have quite an extensive menu. On Mondays and Tuesdays they serve the lunch menu all day. They're pretty big portions on the lunch menu. I ordered the chicken Angelique with the Tope La salad. The salad is big enough to almost be an entree. The chicken is perfectly grow old with a creamy ham sauce. It was sitting on top of a fried grit cake and topped with some sweet potato hay. All of the flavors work so well together and the potatoes really gave it an extra crunch. My coworker ordered the crab pasta bake and almost licked his bowl clean. We are definitely going to be back to try more items here! read more

Visited last nite during Starry November Nights and enjoyed delicious appetizers. Very crowded but not a long wait for food or drink. All hands on deck and they were rocking and rolling. The smoked wings and slaw are delicious and totally different flavors. The steak tip with asparagus and shrimp appetizer special was amazing. How the mighty have fallen. This place used to be fantastic, but on the last visit I was disappointed to find that the entire menu has changed. All of the people in our group were disappointed. The dishes were not well composed or balanced. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and found that it was not pulled pork or a sandwich but instead it was chunks of pork between two greasy pieces of quesadilla. There was not way to pick it up. It was gross! With so many stellar options in the area you can most certainly do better elsewhere. Oh, service isn't the same either. Stopped in for lunch after church on Sunday. My wife ordered a salad, and I ordered a steak with a baked potato. About 20 minutes or so passed, and the waitress came to the table and told me that they had finished cooking 2 baked potatoes (they partially cook them and then keep them refrigerated until they get ordered) and that both of them were bad. She offered me another side, and regretably, I didn't take the offer. I maintained that I wanted a baked potato. Another 10 or 15 minutes passed, and the food came out, and there was no baked potato. I ate the steak, and I had about 2 bites left when the waitress came back to the table and asked if I wanted something else. Again, I declined, and she said she would have the manager come and speak to me. I thought the manager might offer me a dessert (I would have refused) or at least take $2 off my bill, $28 for a 12 oz ribeye. Neither was even offered. Needless to say, it was disappointing the way their customer service handled the situation. They still charged me full price even though they offered no compensation. Yes I was disappointed in not getting the meal that I ordered off the menu, but I am more disappointed at how the customer service was handled. I went all through Yelp and see that this restaurant does not appear as one of the top restaurants in Hammond. I get it now. read more

Boom! Hit the jack pot here! Tope La serves up a mean business dinner! The apps were great, loved the onion straws, cooked perfectly, lightly breaded with a nice sauce, and the Porcupine Potato Hushpuppies were divine! The local beers are great from the bar or table service. The service was excellent, attentive and friendly. I dined on the Crabmeat Stuffed Red Snapper which was done in a panko bread crumb and got into the juicy taste of the fish and crab and sauce. The appetizers are always good. If you like nuts in your entrees, the pecan crusted chicken or talapia are good. Don't order the sandwiches... just not that great. The main negative to this location is sanitation. Always ask for a tablecloth. If not, you may have just had an old damp cloth wipe the worn tabletops... and they will absorb that wonderful smell. The bathrooms don't look like they've had anything done to them except for changing the toilet paper. The walls, mirror, stalls and pictures seriously need cleaning! It makes one wonder what the kitchen is like if the tables and bathrooms are gross. read more

I grew up in the Hammond area and ate here only once that I can recall. I guess as a child, you don't appreciate quality food. But as an adult, I eat at Tope La at least once when I'm in the area. Definitely one of the more random restaurants I've been in. It seems to have a pretty nebulous identity - it's got a fancy atmosphere, but TVs on some walls and our table had "S loves M" scratched into it. Dinner was good, but expensive for what it was. I had the crabmeat-stuffed redfish with jumbo crabmeat on top - it came to something like $28. I would definitely go again for the lunch menu if I were in Hammond. It looked like they had a lot of their regular options but for cheaper, and also sandwiches for around $10. Cocktails range from $6.50 to $8, which was reasonable based on the types of liquor they were using. I'm sure you could do well options, though. Not a lot of light option, for the record. All of the fish had heavy cream sauces, and the menu didn't have any vegetarian options beyond salads - not that I was really expecting it to, but it would have been nice to see. The place is pretty large, and was fairly empty - we were eating dinner at 9:15 on a Saturday night in late April. They had a guy with a guitar playing acoustic covers of very random songs from the 90's, but didn't turn off the radio, so there was Cee-Lo Green intermixed with covers that ranged from Radiohead to Martina McBride. Definitely not a romantic atmosphere, whatever they were going for. But, the fish and crabmeat were very tasty and the cocktails got the job done - overall, we were pretty pleased and just amused at the restaurant itself. read more

My husband & I eat here fairly often & we love the food. They have a nice variety to select from & also a lot that you just don't see everywhere else, like their shrimp artichoke stack. The food was delicious! I highly recommend the porcupine balls for an appetizer and the shrimp and grits. The wait staff was very friendly. My only complaint is that it took 2 hours from the time we were seated until the time the check came.... And we didn't order dessert. While I've been here a many a time, and spent $150+ per meal, I didn't know who I was supporting. Can't say I've ever spoken to someone more rude over the phone. Jimmy was completely unprofessional and so hurtful that I was shocked. I could hardly respond as he told me he would never rent his catering room in December for someone with my particular budget per person because he has so many more opportunities to make much more money. He also scoffed and couldn't even begin to recommend anyone else who could help "with that kind of budget" ($800-$1200). While making money is key to staying in business, so is customer service. Mind you, this "very small" event is on a Thursday night. I can't imagine many people are fighting over a room for that weeknight. While I did have an idea in mind for food, we were completely flexible on alcohol, room rental, etc. Jimmy wouldn't know that, because he was so incredibly cold and standoffish that it wasn't even worth mentioning. I am still appalled. I hope Jimmy enjoys all of his many, very expensive rehearsal dinners he hosts in December. read more

Very disappointed. I have lived on the northshore my entire life and had never eaten at Tope La. The lack of "word of mouth" should have been a fair warning. My wife and I went on a Saturday night. It was not particularly busy(nobody waiting ahead of us and plenty of open tables) but it still took an awkward few minutes standing in front of the empty hostess stand before we were acknowledged. No big deal. The restaurant business is hectic. I get it. I wouldn't have even made note of the wait if it hadn't become the beginning of a series of disappointments. We are ushered to our table and began by ordering a beer, for myself, and a cocktail for my wife, as we overlook the menu. The waitress returns about 5 minutes later with 2 waters and asks if we're ready to order. We understand that the drinks are handled by the bartender(who gets tipped by patrons at the bar) and the wait-staff is at their mercy but many restaurants have figured out ways to bypass this eternal struggle. We order the Asian Duck appetizer and sip on our waters. A few minutes later my beer arrives sans-cocktail. The waitress apologizes and we place our Entree orders. Minutes pass and the waitress returns to our table with complimentary bread and the long-lost cocktail. The bread was bread. And it was free. The Asian Duck appetizer arrives and it looks great. Unfortunately it tasted like generic sesame chicken from a Chinese buffet. I wondered why they would have a duck appetizer but not a duck entree and this answered the question. It was nothing more than frozen "duck" nuggets. My wife then received her "Sensation Salad". It came as a soup. The lettuce was wilted and soggy, lying in a pool of dressing. It had obviously had time to sit and marinade. No competent "chef" would ever drench a salad this way. It was inedible. At this point we had been there over an hour. We ask the waitress if she can bring our Entrees in a to-go box. She obliges, understandingly. None of this was her fault and we did our best not to make it seem as such but I'm sure she could sense we were irritated. The proverbial "icing on the cake" was getting home to realize that the Entree I had waited over an hour for (Paneed Chicken Stack) was burnt. We went Saturday night and had a great meal. Love the dinning experience. My husband had The Ribeye a and I had the Mahi-mahi. Both were excellent! The steak was cooked just the way he likes it and the fish was so good and I loved the sauce. And our Waitress Denzel was the best in fact the whole experience was wonderful. Tope La has been in Hammond for about 10 years and is one of the "nicer" restaurants in town. The food is generally very good. I have eaten their about 10 times for various occasions. This time a group of colleagues and I met for an early dinner after work. I ordered off of the special "rustic Italian" menu they were featuring. A generous friend in the group ordered a couple of appetizers to share. One was the fried olives. This just lends credence to the idea that we fry anything in the south. They were pretty good. Since they were green olives they had a strong olive flavor. I like olives so that was OK for me. The other appetizer was outstanding. It was fried eggplant topped with a lump crab meat sauce. The crab meat was excellent and so was the sauce. For an entree, I ordered the chicken parmigiana. Not sure why, because I try to avoid past. It was just OK - nothing special. I give the four star rating taking into account all of my visits. Most of which the food have been very good. The service is always good as well - this time no different. I was very pleased with Tope La. As a vegetarian in Louisiana, eating was very difficult. There wasn't a ton for me on the menu at Tope La, but our server, Everett, was very quick to point out what I could eat. He was training a new server, and he was still 100% on top of our table. He and my coworker got along famously, including making fun of me, which seems to happen. Our food was good as well. We got the spinach dip appetizer, a couple of salads and dessert. The dessert was their Sweet Potato Nutty something or other. Who cares? It was DELICIOUS!!! Sweet potato ice cream in a candy shell sitting atop a delicious praline sauce with a waffle cone. Oh my gosh! AMAZING! If I could figure out a way to get the sweet potato ice cream home to California for my coworker and my dad, I would. The restaurant was a little pricey, but it seemed that nearly everything in Louisiana was, so that wasn't really surprising. I found this place while visiting. That atmosphere was really nice. Very clean and classy. I sat at the bar on Friday 4pm. Mark-the bartender was great. I told him I wanted something "Louisiana". He suggested Shrimp and grits. It was so delicious. Came back on Saturday night. Melissa-bartender suggested lightly blackened alligator. I never tried alligator before. I loved it. We go here often. Or, at least we did. Food is generally very good; and is often great. Service can sometimes be hit or miss, but the food usually makes up for it. But the last time we went things went badly. It started by my ordering one of the specials listed on the white board at the front door. When my order was brought out it did not include some of the sides listed on the board. I got up to go re-read the description to be sure, and was correct. I brought it to our servers attention who returned my plate to the kitchen. A few moments later he returned with the same plate, and said the board was wrong, it had not been changed from the lunch specials. The dinner version of the dish did not include the same sides as the lunch version. He offered to bring me a baked potato, which I declined since I cannot have them. He then offered to give me a free creme brulee for desert, which I accepted. When our bill was brought out the price for my dish was much higher than was listed on the board. I again went to double-check the board only to find that it had been changed since we arrived, and now had a MUCH higher price listed for my dinner dish. I complained, and explained that they had advertised the dish at that price, and was obligated to honor it. The manager was called over and I made the same point to him. He initially refused to honor the posted price, then said if he lowered the price he would have to charge me for the dessert. I resisted, stating that I did not ask for dessert, it was offered as a substitute for the side I did not get. After much heated discussion he stomped off with the bill, then returned and slammed it down on the table, with the lower price and no dessert charge. We have not been back since, and feel that the manager acted in a most unprofessional manner. It is a shame, as we usually ate here at least once a week, and often twice. They have great specials. So, be forewarned, if you get one of the specials pay close attention to the price posted, and the price you get charged. read more

Last night some very good friends met my wife and I for dinner at Tope La. The atmosphere and food was outstanding. Because there was a parade going on, which we did not know about beforehand, made it a little hard to find a parking spot, but once inside, the soft music, ambiance and great company made for an outstanding evening. The chef had specials which let you make up your own special dinner from a sheet of copious selections. All 4 of us ordered something different, mainly seafood, and all of us had delicious meals.
