We had a designer develop a conceptual plan, but it did not fully address the engineering issues. When we met John Arney at Helix Landscape Construction, we knew we'd found the right person and the right company for the job. Sloping below street level, our front yard posed an interesting challenge to keep rain runoff out of our sump system as much as possible. The design incorporated the concept of a rocky swale to collect runoff, but John engineered all the details to including french drains to direct runoff into the landscape to re-charge the local water table for the signature bonsai tree and other plants envisioned in the plan. Throughout the project, John took the time to understand our aesthetic for the yard, and provided advice on so many details as it took shape. He traveled with us to rock yards and specialty nurseries to help find the perfect elements. John brought both great design ideas and the technical know-how we needed to make our vision a reality. Over the course of the two weeks he spent with us, I felt he truly became our partner in the project, which made it a pleasure to work with him and his team. As for execution, John's team was efficient, conscientious and respectful of us and our neighbors. The project was completed on time, despite discovery of a massive root system left behind from a previous tree removal, and many other tweaks to the effort made along the way. We are thrilled with the results and would recommend John for any landscape project you might have.

Nothing was done correctly. 1. irrigation: John explained he was an irrigation specialist and he declined the irrigation plan saying he would take care of the irrigation and that the price was included. He spent the first two weeks working on the irrigation, and in the end, half the grass did not survive and many of the shrubs also dried up. I ended up having to hire another contractor to re-do my irrigation who installed a completely new system tailored to the design (with new pipes, drip for shrubs, and rotor heads for the grass) in two days for less than what john charged me for one new station (that I never even authorized). 2. Lawn: new ground cover did not come in and the old grass and shrubs are popping up all over the place, despite me paying for demo of the original lawn and landscaping. I was also there when he instructed his team to spray round-up on the yard AFTER seeding and planting, so those shrubs died and the lawn either didn't grow in or died. John tried to attribute the dead shrubs to the heavy rain. 4. Very poor shrub quality: he accepted poor/dying plant material, and also let it sit for two weeks before installing, and he actually installed dead plant material, then made me walk around and make a map or install flags where replacements were needed. 5. Shrub installation: shrubs weren't placed per the design, and he also made me go around and map out the mistakes. 6. Hardscape installation - he installed stepping stones 2 inches above grade and planting boxes very unlevel/lop sided. I did get other quotes, but took this one based on recommendations. I do not recommend Helix.

They did a stellar job and the floors are super clean. Communication was great and everything went well. The insurance company paid for the job, so I'm not certain what the costs were. They did pull some paint off a door where they taped up some protective plastic sheeting. I'll contact my GC to have that resolved.

Shows up one hour past the scheduled time...it happens, I understand, but maybe you should at least apologize and give me a heads up? Apologizing after I call you out is not comforting. Very nice in person, Takes measurements and discusses. This was a Friday, so I understand we might not get the estimate soon. I'm told, if not this weekend, I'll get it to you by Monday eod. No worries, that's reasonable. Heck, it can be any day, just do what you promise. Monday nothing. Tuesday nothing. Call Wednesday. Says I'm really busy, No apology until I call them out on what they promised. I didn't set the expectation, they did. I tell them, if we don't even have a contract and you're being like this, what am I to expect? Next day, I get a text about the room to be done, is it upstairs or downstairs, and the bathroom, is it being done? I'm totally confused, we never spoke about a bathroom and the room is upstairs. I get the quote finally. It's ~$30k more than another quote I got from a 5 star Yelp business. WTH. Looking deeper into the quote, it's talking about terracota tile and grout...we never spoke about that, we spoke what I already have downstairs, which is laminate. They even stated, that's a manufactured piece we can't get anymore but we can get something close to match. Don't always believe Yelp reviews, but I'd believe this one.

We asked for a quote from My WIndow Solutions, got one that was quite good. We had explained the rationale for getting a replacement window (the leak). Parry sent over his crew right away to caulk around the existing one so we wouldn't get any incursion while waiting for the new one to arrive and get installed. Nice! For this job, I had also asked to have a custom window casing and deep windowsill built. We agreed that I'd buy the materials (a particular trim profile and hardwood species), prime them, and they'd do the cutting and installation. This collaboration worked perfectly.

Second, it was a green door, meaning, it was not totally cured and oozed out sap for 4 months. 6 months later, the door cracked. After several months, they agreed to a new door. When it came, it was not measured correctly so I had to wait another 6 months for the next door. so now the door is installed, I had to pay again to get it repainted. Guess what, 6 months later, that new door cracked. They will not replace the door so I have to live with a cracked door since they told me it is past warranty. their solution...pay another $1500 to install a fiberglass door as a replacement. I would not even give this company 1 star if I could.

But when we needed to change out an old bathroom vanity for a new one, we knew we had to get serious about it. And if you hire a plumber to do the work, which DOES involve some plumbing, then it costs way more. I resigned myself to the search and literally just contacted the most popular handyman service in my town based on Yelp reviews. Guess what? thank goodness I did! 805's Handyman (NOT to be confused with "805 Handyman") responded right away--even though it was a Sunday and the World Cup games were on. I uploaded pics, sent in the details, got an estimate, and made an appointment. On the day of, a nice truck drove up with the logo painted proudly on the side (not a guy in a fancy sports car, like handyman #9). Two sturdy guys came in and got down to business right away--no fuss, all smiles, and dare I say it? Like they loved what they do. (Unlike handyman #7 who was a former engineer and complained the whole time, even refusing to do some tasks!) Long story shorter, the bathroom vanity switcheroo turned out to be bigger and messier project than expected. It ended up involving some retiling, grouting, electrical adjustments, alterations to trim, painting--and the plumbing bits and installation and removal. The workers were quiet, helpful, communicated the whole time and were just generally old-school excellent (unlike handyman #4, who was nice, but got everything crooked and a bit wonky, bless his heart). The 805's Handyman workers did ALL the plumbing/installing/electrical/tile work/painting--the whole shebang. And the end result is a sweet transformation for our upstairs bath (I also asked them to take care of a few more items on my to-do list, which they did quickly and again, with smiles). The whole thing was very gratifying. So much so, that the next time something in our house needs fixing, I will actually look forward to hiring 805's Handyman again. We're lucky to have them in the Ventura area and they are popular on Yelp for very good reasons.

I communicated with them through yelp and then we took to contact by phone/text. They were super communicative and prompt on setting up a date for repairs. They worked around my schedule which was appreciated and followed through without issue. I had them work on an outdoor electrical/lighting fixtures and Patrick did it with ease. He came with all his supplies and was prepared, he swapped out my old, ugly lighting fixtures and put in the new ones no issue. He was careful but prompt with getting this task complete. Very nice guy and someone you could trust and who did a honest thorough job. Aside from doing great work and being professional, the price point was also very reasonable compared to ten other quotes I got (yes, I do my research). They are affordable, professional and most importantly they did a great job. Even my neighbors watching from the outside were impressed and came over to take some business cards. I know I'll be locking them in for some more appointments and repairs in the near future. Great work and happy to have a trustworthy handyman in the area.
