Somewhere between San Antonio and regret, nestled in a gas station that smells like windshield…read morefluid and Lotto dreams, lies Charley's Cheesesteaks. A culinary oasis for those brave souls who believe hot meat and melted cheese should always be within arm's reach--even if the nearest chair is bolted to the floor and covered in someone else's spilled Fanta. Charley's isn't here to impress you. Charley's is here because the laws of capitalism demanded that mall food have a second life. And what a life it is--reincarnated in this fuel-scented temple of compromise, where a man can contemplate his choices between pumps four and five. The experience? You order. You wait. You wonder why the speaker is yelling your number like it's a draft lottery. And then it arrives: a sandwich hot enough to burn your tongue, but not your soul. The bread is soft, the steak is chopped like it owes someone money, and the cheese is doing its best under the circumstances. There's a sense of dignity in that. Like a prom tuxedo from JCPenney--technically formal, spiritually fast food. And yet... you eat. Because it's 6:37 p.m., you're tired, you're mildly road-delirious, and this is your story now. This is road-trip cuisine in its purest form: not good, not bad--just there for you, like a friend who doesn't ask questions when you show up sad and greasy. Would I recommend it? Only to people I respect slightly less than I claim to. Would I return? Yes. Of course. I always do. Three stars. One for the meat, one for the nostalgia, and one for the fact that the bathroom wasn't locked.

Made it a point to seek out several locally owned BBQ joints during my most recent trip to San…read moreAntonio & since my sister lives in Lytle I had seen Tommy Joes on Yelp & made a note of their operating days & suggested I go there when they open & buy lunch for the family. I was there at 11:15 on Saturday hungry & ready to throw my life's savings at some meat. Luckily it didn't cost that much. The setup is great for the small town of lytle. Tommy Joes occupies a corner lot under a large shade tree & with an awning built off their trailer. Their smoker is one of the biggest I've seen & has to be 20 ft long or more, just impressive to gawk at. They had a lady selling crafts in their lot, & plenty of places to sit if you wanted to dine outside instead of taking it home. I ordered 1 1/2 pounds of pulled pork, a large container of smoked Mac & cheese, a medium container of potato salad, a dozen of the beef tallow homemade flour tortillas (a must), & the special which was a honey bbq glazed pork belly they had for $28 a pound. Everything was ready quick within 5 mins & they packaged it all up & included some fixings like pickled onion, pickled & bread. I made bbq tacos using the tortillas with both the pork belly & the pulled pork, adding only some shredded cheese & crema & man they were SLAPPING. Especially the pork belly which was beautiful to look at & better to eat. A pound was plenty to share for 6 people as was the 1 1/2 pounds of pork.Another highlight was the smoked Mac & cheese. Other than melting a block of velveeta into a pot of pasta I don't think I've ever had cheesier Mac & cheese. It was really good but I didn't taste & smokiness so don't let that deter you. All in all, it was only about $75 for everything & we had leftovers so not a bad deal for a lot of high quality local bbq. The people were friendly as heck too so that's always a plus. I wanted to go back again before I left but didn't have time. I hope they do well so I can visit again next year!

The food was decent. That's all I can say. I visited this location over a year ago and got sick…read more I've avoided it until today. I was out and about and hungry so I thought maybe that was a fluke, I'll re-try it. First, there was one car in the drive thru and one couple eating in the dining room, so not busy. I stood at the counter, unnoticed, for long enough that I was considering leaving, then a girl popped out from around the corner. I asked if they do spicy chicken and she said they could "put some sauce on it" and I said that's fine. She rang me up, then she and two other girls stood there talking instead of giving me my drink cup so I could be filling it while I waited. The girl who handed me my food still didn't give me a cup - I had to ask. Then she still went and checked the screen before handing me one?? I ordered a combo and they all come w drinks. No one greeted me, no one said "thank you", "you're welcome" or anything. I felt as though I had interrupted their day and was imposing on their time. Once I got home and opened the box of food, the "sauce" she had offered? It was all just squirted down in the front of the box, wasn't even applied to the chicken, just a mess. Customer service is dead.
