Amazing dentist. She made the experience feel good and doesn't make you uncomfortable. I was confused at first when I realized she does everything herself. Even so, I enjoy she is upfront about the costs and finishes the appointment in a prompt manner and she makes sure you know what your having. She is excellent at making sure you get what you want and feel comfortable before leaving. Makes me comfortable she confident about her craft. Amazing dentist! I was nervous about finding a new dentist given a complex dental history, but Desiree was very gentle and extremely thorough. She noticed left over braces glue on my teeth (I haven't had braces in almost 10 years) that no other dental hygienist or dentist had noticed (or at least removed) and she immediately started removing them. I appreciated the thorough explanations for things and the amount of time she took to examine possible areas of concern, but still remained very speedy and completed the entire x-ray, exam, and cleaning within 30min! After losing my dental insurance, I enrolled in Denti-Cal and was referred to Dr. Liu. My first visit in August 2023 lasted about 40 minutes and included a cleaning and X-rays. Dr. Liu told me everything looked healthy, with no cavities or concerns. Since Denti-Cal allows only one cleaning and set of X-rays per year, I returned in August 2024 for another cleaning and X-rays. However, this appointment felt rushed, lasting only 15-20 minutes, and I had to remind her about the X-rays. Despite mentioning sensitivity in several areas, she again said everything looked fine. In January 2025, my sensitivity worsened, and I called her office--only to learn she had been on maternity leave for months and would not return until June 2025. While trying to find a new dentist, I discovered that Denti-Cal had been billed for six fillings--three in 2023 and three in 2024--despite no such work being done. When I asked Dr. Liu about this, she gave multiple conflicting explanations and repeatedly assured me she would correct the issue. However, despite months of follow-ups, nothing was actually done, and each time I reached out, I was met with a new excuse or delay. She also claimed she would contact my new Denti-Cal dentist to clear up the discrepancy but never actually did, causing further unnecessary delays. I eventually decided to see a private dentist and requested my records from Dr. Liu's office. Shockingly, I was told that my 2024 X-rays had been irreversibly deleted and that the rest of my 2024 chart had only been updated recently (March 2025), long after my appointment. I found it extremely concerning that my X-rays were supposedly lost due to an "accidental" click, especially since no notes from that visit had been entered until months later. Because of this, I had to pay $350 for new X-rays and experienced months of delays in treatment. I can't help but wonder if the missing records would have shown the early signs of the issues I now face. Dr. Liu eventually contacted Denti-Cal to correct the billing issue, but by then, it was too late--I had already paid out-of-pocket for my care. Had my records been properly maintained and my concerns addressed in a timely manner, I could have received appropriate treatment months ago without unnecessary expenses and stress. If you have been a patient here, I strongly recommend reviewing your insurance claims for accuracy. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this office. read more

This girl was defrauding my insurance, charging them for things she told me she couldn't do under my insurance. ( always wanting random impressions, probably to back up whatever charges she made to them- absent ACTUAL dentistry) Then, when I paid her 3500 for 2 front teeth crowns , one broke off the first week. I would not recommend this Dentist. In the past few years, she has closed her office for months on end for maternity leave. Two times. And she leaves her patients hanging, waiting for months for her to return and finish work. There are no possible emergency visits. Very unreliable. I would not go to this small, one-person office run by an expectant mother as chief dentist. There is no support here for a patient who needs dental work done. read more

On August 7 I made an appointment for a dental cleaning, xrays and checkup which was scheduled on Monday October 28 (thats the earliest they had available). The week before my appointment in October I get multiple emails and texts asking me to confirm my appointment on October 28th which I confirmed via email. After confirming via email I get another text saying if I don't confirm again by 5pm the end of the day they'll cancel it. Annoyed I reconfirm my appointment via text this time instead of email. On Monday morning the day of my appointment on October 28th I get a text saying they're canceling my appointment. WTF!!!! You harass me all the week before to assure I show up and when I do and take a day off, that day you cancel on me!!! Then they say they'll give me a new appointment date but then I am notified that the doctor is now out on maternity leave and I need to find a new dentist! I will say the whole experience was horrible especially after they badgered me all the week before to confirm and reconfirm only to cancel on me the day of and wast my time for MONTHS. Now I need to find a new dentist and I am overdue for my yearly cleaning, checkup etc. I definitely wont be coming back. read more

I just wanted to leave my honest review, which btw was not solicited in any way. I just feel a positive review is well deserved. Dr. Liu and Francey are a wonderful team. Francey comes across as very prompt, professional, organized, and easy to work with. Francey will actually do what she says she will. If she says she will email you a reminder, she will. If she says she will look out for an afternoon appointment time and let me know if one opens up, she will. She comes across as really on top of everything. I just went in today for my standard teeth cleaning. Dr. Liu really tries her best to be a nice balance of approachable and not intimidating while also being efficient and professional, and I thought she did a great job. I've been to a lot of dentists and her skill and equipment are as good as any dentist I have been to. I of course cannot speak on her ability and technology when it comes to more advanced teeth procedures. I went in at 2pm and was out at 2:25pm and it did not feel rushed or any corners cut. Very on time performance for my one experience so far. I'll definitely return and I definitely recommend Toothology SF! read more

Desiree Liu is a nice person, and I genuinely enjoyed working with her. However, part of the scheduling issue is that she is the only dentist in her office; she does not want to hire other dentists out of greed. She is currently on maternity leave, and all of her appointments are pushed out to July. So keep in mind that if she has any personal problems, she most likely will cancel your appointment, and you'll have to reschedule. Personally, I find it odd to do business that way. read more

The 5-star rating is 1000% accurate! This was the best dentist experience I've ever encountered in my life. From the office staff (all my interactions have been via telephone with Francey) to the location and, of course, the dental work with Dr. Desiree, Toothology deserves all of its Yelp praise. Francey was extremely prompt in getting to my initial online inquiry regarding new clients. She also diligently followed up and confirmed my insurance prior to our appointment. She also accommodated my last minute needs to change my appointment. Francey is a gem and a great first point of contact for Toothology. The location is pretty central, right off of Union Square, so very easy to get to via public transportation. The office space is in a dental building. The office space itself is a chic, cozy little space filled with light and lots of greenery. My first appointment with Dr. Desiree was fantastic. I enjoyed that she completed all work for my appointment (some other offices I've been to divide the work between many people: dental assistant, hygienist, and dentist) - this made the appointment incredibly efficient. She's quick, efficient, thoughtful, and incredibly personable. She took X-rays and completed the cleaning with such ease. Unlike some other dentists or dental hygienists I've had, Dr. Desiree explains and narrates the work she's simultaneously doing. And finally, my first visit (X-ray, exam, and cleaning) was only 30-40 minutes. I had my first appointment with Dr. Liu today, and I can't sing her praises enough. I never thought that I'd have a pleasant experience at the dentist, because I avoid going in like the plague. It had been years since my last cleaning, and I was super anxious--like anxiety attack ready! When I arrived, something about Dr. Liu's warm energy, patience, and jovial personality instantly put me at ease. She was thorough and did a fantastic job explaining everything she was doing. Dr. Liu is a wonderful dentist! I've actually been with her since she was in dental school at UCSF and followed her through a couple of practices until she was able to set up this one. It's very easy to set up appointments with her. Text reminders are great for me since I'm a new mom and very forgetful now. Dr. Liu is great about walking you through your options and setting your expectations. I have a lot of dental anxiety so this is pretty key for me and the main reason I've stuck with her for so long. She doesn't seem to try to make you go through a bunch of procedures just to do it. She's very easy going and provides a relaxed atmosphere. The office is very clean and in a nice building by Union Square. It's convenient to public transportation which is my preferred way of traveling. As I searched for a Denti-Cal provider, I had difficulty finding a provider with good reviews. Toothology SF was the only one that looked trustworthy (though I can't speak for the others), and it did not disappoint! Last week I called to book a dental cleaning, and the receptionist told me that they didn't have availability until November. About an hour later, I received a callback from the receptionist, offering me the spot of a patient who canceled for the following week. I really appreciated that she did this, as it saved me months of waiting for a cleaning. When I arrived at the appointment, Dr. Liu was the only person in the office due to COVID-19. She was extremely welcoming and timely and was upfront with what services would and wouldn't be covered with my insurance. She very clearly explained the care she would provide and answered all of my questions. When putting in one of my fillings, she was very patient with me as I asked her to file down the filling numerous times so it would fit with the tooth above it. I even walked to the front desk to check out and realized that the tooth still didn't fit properly. Dr. Liu kindly offered to continue working on it. A day later, I can happily say that the filling is not at all noticeable and that she did a fantastic job! The office staff is so unprofessional. I was not able to go to my appointment at the beginning of this year since they decided to shut down for a couple weeks due to COVID. I can understand that, but there was no effort made to fit me in ASAP. Instead I was given options two months out. I requested a call from Dr Liu to discuss the matter. I was told by the office staff on Tuesday that she would call my by the end of the week. That gave her 4 days to be able to call me back. There was silence. I waited until the following Thursday before calling again. The office staff just said that they will inform Dr Liu again and they cannot give me an actual time frame of when she will contact me. This is such disappointing service and so unprofessional. I was truly shocked. I don't recommend on the sole basis of common decency and communication. read more

I just had my first appointment - x-rays and teeth cleaning. This was my favorite dentist appointment and now Dr. Liu is my dentist going forward. Dr. Liu is very warm, friendly, and honest. When I was reading the reviews and saw she had 5 stars, I was thinking it must be all her friends or she would ask them to review her, and I'm here to tell you I haven't met her before today and she didn't ask me to review her. I walked out and felt compelled to give a review and I'd give her 6 stars if I could. I came from another dentist where I tried to get my free teeth cleaning and they said, let's not do it cause you need a deep clean. We ran it by insurance and they rejected the cleaning. And I came to Dr. Liu, she cleaned my teeth and at the end I asked if I should have deep cleaning and she said there is no need. She is honest and doesn't oversell you, which was a concern for me when going to the dentist. I walked in feeling a little tired and left in a better mood, she is always smiling and it's contagious. Just did my second cleaning with Dr. Liu this year. She did my cleaning herself, both times, and did my X-rays during my first visit herself. She has a hygienist but likes to do the cleaning herself so she leaves ample time between patients and is never in a rush. She's open weekends, prime location and has great music. Shame on my for not writing more reviews than the majority of Yelpers. But I did promise Dr. Lui that I would. I have medicaid and that usually means that you don't receive the best care as private insurance would offer but that's not the case with Toothology. Her staff was more than confident in ensuring my insurance was covered, they were able to schedule my appointments with not a lot of notice as I was living the country in just 2 weeks for an entire year. The receptionist (Filipina lady who's name I don't remember) also made me feel at ease when I asked her specific questions about my treatments and concerns going out of the country. I really appreciated that! Dr. Lui's beside is personable and professional but moreover it feels like it's an old friend who just so happens to be a dentist. Of the many dentists that I've seen, Dr. Liu is by far the most honest! Unlike many of my previous Downtown SF dentists I've seen who love to just "drill, fill, and bill," Dr. Liu is conservative, friendly, and very thorough when explaining my dental problems. She only does what is absolutely necessary and will even monitor small cavities as needed. Dr. Liu's conservative/honest approach is what makes her stand out from the other dentists. When reviewing my dental needs, she explained everything in a simple and concise manner, while thoroughly answering all my questions. She whitened my teeth for my wedding and it looked amazing!
