We had a lovely dinner with friends. The ambience was great--it looks like a small warehouse-style restaurant from the outside, but inside it opens up with a huge, high ceiling. Went to their location and ordered Wednesday special Chicken Wings and 1/2 side of Memphis style pork ribs to take out while I waited. Paid the bill of $31.50 and waited and waited and waited for over a half hour. I asked the server to check on my take out and she said it was coming shortly. It finally did arrive and I left. When I got home I noticed the bill showed chicken wings and pulled pork? I opened the bad and they had given me two orders of chicken wings? Is this an organized establishment? Not happy at all. Enjoyed our visit. Staff are down to earth and amiable. They had a bigger selection of beers than I expected which was a nice surprise. Amazing beer! Wow so the area is very industrial, not like there is a really massive sign but it's clean and easy to spot! There is quite a bit of available parking too. Love the rustic, log cabin, wood vibe as soon as walk in. And the beautiful Alberta shaped table is a great effect. Even the ceiling tiles that are plywood are very in sync with the whole vibe of the space. So sad they don't do brewery tours on weekdays, only Saturdays! But we did steal a peek and it looks massive complete with a stage! Live music nights maybe?? I wish they would have more about their history in the main sitting area because I hear it's a great story behind how it all got started but I'm sure they share more about that on the tour perhaps. Onto the beer which is why we are here! A flight of their core 4 not a bad price at $5 but we highly recommend you get the other flavours too for an additional $2 each. Our personal favourites- People Skills: dang good and the story behind this beer is hilarious! You gotta take a read up on it ;) and the Red Rage- that caramel sweet goodness is so delightful and creamy. For my fellow popcorn lovers thy have that for free! Yes free! And a good selection of shake on flavours too! Only downside small brown bags- yes you will want to grab a few bags cause who doesn't love popcorn?! I've been all about this local brewery ever since drinking my first spiffy (seagull safe?) plastic topped 6 pack of People Skills - peeling off the sticker labels and discreetly slapping them to the backs of everyone at the party. People skills indeed! Their 3 available beers are set up so you can hang out with the Tool Shed guys for an entire evening. Crafted after their brewers and their personalities, you can hang out with all the Tool Shed guys in one evening. Here's how to do it, all wrapped up into one weird man-date of a review. Have a big juicy burger with Jeff and his Starcheek IPA - Bold and hoppy, this is one of my favourites to match with a good 'n' greasy BBQ. Invite Graham and the Red Rage out for dessert. Lots of thick, after dinner coffee flavours but evened out with a good hop kick. My favourite Tool Shed beer for winter. And then Joe - you can can spend all night with him if you like. (This is getting weird, Joe.) People Skills is light, refreshing, and still comes in at 5.2% abv. It's delicious and you'll be chatting it up with everybody on that hot, summer patio in no time. I'm looking forward to checking out the brewery, but until then I'll just keep enjoying it from the liquor store. Tool Shed just launched in Calgary a couple weeks ago. They have three beers that they're brewing to start. A cream ale called People Skills, an IPA called Star Cheek, and an amber called Red Rage. Its a fun brand with each label coming with a story as to why they went with each name. People Skills is great. Its smooth and crisp. Star Cheek is a solid IPA. It has a strong hoppiness which I love in an IPA. Red Rage is a dark brew. Its darker than something I would drink for a regular brew. I had the opportunity to attend their launch party last week at National on 17th. It was a regular night for National but they had pints of Tool Shed on special for $6.50. As the media has pointed out, Tool Shed is over a year away from having an permanent home in the city, but they're eventually going to have a brewery down by Big Rock. read more

I have introduced their beer to literally thousands of Calgarians and all agree that this is amazing beer. This is by far my favorite brewery and brand of beer! Jeff and Graham are two of the most humble people I've ever met and are truly making a difference in the market place. I have successfully transitioned my friends into Tool Shed buyers and I will continue to convert many more. I am blown away by the taste, craftsmanship and dedication to making an amazing product. I have had tool shed beer, however, it has not been at their location it has been at other local breweries around the city that I have tried it and it is great! Recently, this brewery was trying to get approved for patio seating outside and was having a very difficult time from the City of Calgary and AGLC to just get 4 tables on their patio. Recently they got approved: Visitors to a northeast brewery may now enjoy their beverages al fresco after the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) granted a license for Tool Shed Brewing Company's patio. Co-founder Graham Sherman had been red with frustration, not rage, with the process of applying to the City of Calgary for approval of the parking lot patio. Sheman said the application process for a patio outside the taproom of the business lasted 11 months and cost him more than $10,000. In an interview with CTV on Saturday, May 12, Sherman blamed the city for several delays in the approval process including the questionable people skills exhibited in the suspect requests for a demolition permit for a wall removed years ago and HVAC inquiries unrelated to the outdoor space. Graham Sherman confirmed to CTV on Monday afternoon that the patio is now open for business following a Monday morning visit from a City of Calgary inspector and the granting of an AGLC licence by the province via email. While a specific reason for the lengthy application process has not been confirmed, the owners of Tool Shed appear ready to turn the other (star) cheek and start welcoming guests to their new patio. I've become a creepy stalker of this place. $15 tours of their brewery, a lot of laughs, and amazing beer. I like to support local brews, but this one is ridiculous. Their beer is so good. I cry when I have their ESB. It's like making out with Keira Knightley, but better. I sob softly when I drink it. Graham was our tour host. I've never met a man as proud of what he does. And he was sober. I'd be passed out from 'sampling' if I owned a brewery. His knowledge, passion and love for creating beer shines through. It's a great change from the tours you get from people that don't know/love what goes into making it. I got a chance to talk to Jeff at the final leg of the tour, and his eyes lit up when I asked about their beer too. Been to a number of breweries before this one and I have never felt so welcome then in the Tool Shed. Both the owners are incredibly friendly, honest, and very hard working and it shows in the awesome beer that they brew. Have three standards, an IPA, Cream Ale and a Red Ale, but are always trying something new. Toolshed's beers are way better now that they are being brewed in their own facility in Calgary instead of being contract brewed in BC. I've been wanting to write a review for Tool Shed for a while but have refrained given their approach to criticism. The reputation that precedes Tool Shed regarding their responses and the general atmosphere created by the brewery, and likely cultivated by the brewery head, has led me to want to refrain from my information being published. What I will assert is that I do know Graham, albeit on a personal level, I have seen and heard about a sample of their interactions regarding bad media, and tasted through the core range along with a portion of their limited release beers. All this is said to assure a level of confidence when it comes to an honest review in attempt to be fair without being omnipotent. I can not assert that what I will say is entirely fair given that I am but one person privy to only so much information, yet I would hold what I do say is said with best intentions to be fair regarding such matters. To begin, the core range of the beers provided by Tool Shed are tolerable. This is said in relation to all craft I am able to enjoy and consume at the moment, of which there is a considerable amount of quality brew out there. There is no hate in my words when I say that if you like Tool Shed you likely appreciate Village brewery as well. The quality of these beers is on tier with that of people who have grown away from Rickards and Big Rock while buying into the sloganeering of local business owners. No, local is not better. Protectionism is not better. Allow the quality of your product to speak for itself. If it can not swim amongst the others in the same pool, it should sink. The concept that certain regional producers should be held in higher regards solely because they are in one's locality is outrageous. On may go as far to assert that if you don't support local, local will not thrive. That is true, but if local is not deserving of survival than it should not persist. This is a simple concept, localized business protectionism is a handicap for the incapable; it wouldn't be fair to ask that someone who is smarter than you to not be included in relationally considering your own intelligence. I'm astounded that this concept is even uttered, let alone even considered as a point of interest for consumers. All said, Tool Shed is fine for baby steps into the beer realm and the overall quality is tolerable. If it is to be pitted against the quality available it pales in comparison. Leave their brew to the uninitiated who haven't discovered the wide world of beer yet. The tenets at one point proclaimed by Tool Shed in response to the flak received by a customer, whose position was in considerable contention, are a farce. I'm especially perturbed by the logic of one point, "As in any industry, any one who trash talks must be willing to perform the trash talked offence BETTER". The nature of anyone who utters this is profoundly oblivious. One thing I would like to assert, critics are a dime a dozen. Anyone can feed off the creation of another, hence why they are so numerous and hated by the creative community at large (at least when they do not weigh in favour of the creator). This said, who has ever critiqued art, literature, or really and other creation and then set off to prove they are the better creator? Are these critics artists? Writers? Brewers? They are not precluded from being any of the above, but they are not any necessarily. Such claims belong in the waste bin of high school (if I'm being generous) rhetoric. Yes, certain claims about being able to do better or the categorically bad nature of some product of creativity should be followed up by a "see, I can do better", but being unable to do so does not preclude one from being able to criticize. I want to follow this up by mentioning that even if the tenets of Tool Shed was made in satire, the post has a much greater scope than what may have been "intended". For all who read this, one can be assured that someone has at least subconsciously taken what has been said to heart. I believe the "local is best" mentality serves as a reasonable testament to my concerns. Even if your statements were not themselves the spark that lit the fuse, they only further purport and cultivate it. If you feel as if these tenets can be stated masquerading behind satire, you must think very lowly of your readership. Next of the docket, everyone that reviews you poorly is not likely to: 1) be from Canada or 2) have tasted your beer? Well, I guess that is one way to discredit your non-target audience; an appeal to entirely non-factual reviewers. "No one could have actually tasted this beer and not liked it" goes the mentality of Tool Shed, "they must be trolls". Or people that have a modicum of taste. While I question the approach of Tool Shed's PR department, maybe one should settle into a questionable seasonal, or not. There are plenty of better breweries in Alberta at the moment, take your time, do some research, don't drink the swill made by these hacks. read more
