The food was delicious. The ambience was a lot of dark wood panel but it was lovely. Service is as great.

Tony's Steak and Seafood - Fried Camembert. Extremely small. Extraordinarily basic. Not worth it.

It's been 60+ years for Tony's. The food is average but dependable. Steaks and seafood are prepared competently, portions are generous, and everything tastes exactly how you expect. Nothing stands out, it's familiar comfort more than destination dining. I wish they used fresh calamari instead of the rings. The friendly, old-school service does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The staff are warm and attentive, which helps elevate what would otherwise be a very middle-of-the-road meal. I watched them work together like a Olympic team. GREAT! A cultural icon with nostalgia on its side, worth a visit if you like classic American/Australian -style steakhouses, but not a place you go for wow factor. You will get good fires and a steak.

But the food is underwhelming and our server got our orders incorrect, despite repeating it back to us. She also brought us a drink that we did not order and instead of simply taking it back, she tried to push it onto us claiming that we indeed ordered it. Odd experience. For table appetizers we tried the fried calamari and camembert. It was disappointing to see the camembert was very small and served with basic crackers, not complimentary to the cheese at all. The calamari was good but a little oily. Each person in our party of 4 ordered different steaks, the steak is why you come to Tony's - all were cooked to our preference. I requested double veggies with my filet, since 2 sides come with each entree. But my veggies were the exact size of everyone else's at my table. When I questioned it, I was told that this is what I would get. Hmmm, okay. While I see the appeal for the pricing and the steak, Tony's would not be my first choice for a steakhouse in this area.

No Fluffy Ducks or Singapore slings on the drinks menu however a thoughtfully selected range of wines and beers to be quaffed. Toby's had only been open a few days when we enjoyed a friendly local feel evening last Saturday. We chose a selection of tapas which were thoughtfully prepared and tasted good. I loved the chicken, cranberry and Camembert wontons along with the bread crumbed calamari which was also a standout. We are well served for choice in Titirangi however we can see Toby's as being a welcome addition local for locals who welcome others to enjoy our special village feel. We wish Peter and staff every success and encourage others to support this welcome addition to our area.

I am a massive fan of tapas dining, it is probably my favourite, but only if the restaurant pulls it of, and I don't think Toby's does. At least not now. The menu is awkwardly phrased and they have too many items on it in my opinion. The staff are still all over the show, as they have been for some time, I think it is becouse they change all the time, with staff coming and going (I've had friends who have worked here). The food itself isn't horrible, but it is not the greatest either. Portions are okay, but for tapas I think there needs to be more flavour in all of it. I also think it is awkward with the bar next door, I never really understood it, becouse it feels like there is a random pub attached to this nice little space. Becouse it is a nice little space, with neat furniture, dated but okay interiors, and surrounding decking. It totally has potential, but I think this place is fading, fast.

The restaurant played cozy jazz music. The food came in almost immediately. The calamari salad was toasty and crunchy. The feta gave it a good kick with the greens. The seafood salad was thick and well portioned. The ciabatta that came with it was toasted right with some butter. The beef salad was supposed to be served warm on top of the salad as described in the menu, but it came in room temperature maybe because it was drenched in their secret sauce. It tasted like a thick Italian dressing with a tad of heat. The portioning was enough since we didn't want to have a heavy dinner being so late at night. I give it a four star for the quality of food. Nothing exceptionally extraordinary. My friend came here and had the seafood salad and would come back for it.

I got the Aged Specialty Sirloin $44. It was cooked to my liking on the inside but medium/medium rare but no crust on the outside. Seasoned fare, nothing special. I couldn't believe the gristle wasn't trimmed before cooking. Maybe so the size and weight would look bigger. I have had much better at Chili's. I haven't had a good steak since I moved to Australia from the US, and others have said the same. Their cuts seem to be full of gristle, even all the Spencer Steaks (Ribeyes). I expected on New York, but not on ribeyes or sirloins. I told them my review and they were very apologetic. They called the gristle fat, I like fat, you can eat fat. The offered a Ribeye The Ribeye came medium rare. I instantly could smell teriyaki. It was tender and flavorful no gristle. I do wish it did not have the flavor teriyaki though. But seriously - who does that in Pukekohe? This isn't anywhere close to the city where it's pretty much expected now. Luckily we were able to be seated right away - but It was directly opposite the door and whenever it was opened and closed a big gust of cold wind came past us. Not to be ungrateful because I would have to say at least five groups of people were turned away, who like me thought they could just turn up and expect a table. Clearly a very popular place to come! Our waitress was warm and welcoming and was easily able to provide us with recommendations for what to get depending on our appetite. I decided to stick with a classic steak, with onion crisps and béarnaise sauce washed down with a nice glass of red wine! I was told it was pretty decent and not to worry about getting an entrée. When the main arrived, I was not left disappointed by not ordering the entree, the main itself is a whole meal. I found the steak to be cooked quite nicely, medium rare. The béarnaise sauce suited the steak excellently... the only let down was the onion crisps, I say crisps because according to their menu it's suppose to be onion rings... but these were cooked well past that stage. Some tasted nice other tasted like burnt crisps you get at the bottom of a roast. Not entirely a bad thing! Even though the place was obviously busy it didn't feel like we were being pressured to hurry up and leave so they could turn the table over for the next group. The wait for our food was fairly average for the size and for the crowd, a busy place means a busy kitchen 35 mins - 45min. There are three places in Pukekohe that now specialise in Steaks. I'm having a really hard time to differentiate them. Each have their own sense of style and do the basics well, which is all a steak lover really wants. For this reason.. I'm calling it a tie for the time being. I am happy to rate them as follows; Food 4 / 5 - Shame about the over done onion crisps (rings) Service 4 / 5 - Warm, friendly and accommodating Price $33.00 - In line for what you get compared to other places Atmosphere 4/ 5 - Popular by nature Overall - 4 /5 - Book early and avoid the table by the door!
