I'm…read moreholding a star since we received an email saying we got our deposit back Aug 12th and I still haven't seen the funds in my account- but besides that issue it's definitely got a 5 star rating! We actually got married a month prior in MA, but needed to celebrate the occasion with all our friends who live here with us in TX. This event space was perfect for a party on a budget. The view- I mean, come ON, was just incredible, and the backdrop for everyone's photos! People could not stop talking about how phenomenal it was. The process of getting the place was a bit tricky, as I could not navigate their government website to select the date and missed the cut-off time before having to do the lottery. Luckily, not a lot of people were begging for dates in August as the venue does not have air conditioning- so the heat was a bit brutal (but that's Texas!)- but we got it no problem! I ended up calling and the person I spoke to was very helpful. Speaking of air conditioning- or lack-there-of- we ended up renting some swamp coolers (huge cooling fans that run off of ice- but a LOT of ice!!) to help with the heat. There are ceiling fans and a few industrial fans included- but those don't help too much in August! I had a hard time figuring out what exactly we needed- so I'm going to add a quick "plug" for Preferred Climate Solutions our of Hutto, TX. They worked ZPC before and knew how to set things up. Brett even had an extra swamp cooler from an earlier event he let us use. Moving on- because this place doesn't require use of specific vendors- it made it that much affordable. We hired Slab BBQ to cater and Pixster photo booth for fun. For drinks, we filled out the necessary paperwork (some cheap $10ish permit? I can't quite remember) and we're able to just bring in a few kegs and boxes of wine from PartyBarn. Everything went off without a hitch! Good to note- the place provides a bunch of tables. Two huge round ones, a few smaller round and rectangle ones, and some nice cocktail tables we used on the patio. (The cocktail tables and one rectangular were good enough condition to go without tablecloths- the rest require coverings.) For lighting- it was definitely important to us to get string lights on the patio. I realized last minute that getting a few hundred feet of lights was going to be trickier than I initially thought- since I had to consider ones that connected and could manage the power of 300 ft of lights. I used Americanpartylights.com- it worked out great! They included zip ties which is important since it's against the park rules to use tape (holds better anyways.) I found a great diagram of ZPC patio for the light arrangements and measurements (photo included.) It was a perfect celebration and I HIGHLY recommend this space for any event! It has such a cool vibe even without decorations, your set up can be minimal and still look amazing. Plus... that VIEW!

After being so stressed, I remember finding this location randomly and calling to see if they had any openings in the month of January, luckily they did at the end of the month on the 31st and I looked up photos and reviews and just had to book it right away!!! Easy to find, a lot of parking space, and just beautiful. I felt so blessed to have found this place. My wedding was just so beautiful!

The moment we stepped over the threshold and saw the massive old oak, the treehouse loft, the intimate and well-maintained grounds, we fell in love. No other venue stood a chance. Sanctuary is both close to downtown and the South Lamar bar/restaurant scene, and somehow completely nestled away into its own little world- the thick canopy really cuts down on a lot of the noise in the area. While parking there isn't great (mostly street parking), it's location makes easily accessible by Uber/Lyft for out-of-towners staying downtown or other hotels in the area. There was a train that went by periodically, but it didn't effect our ceremony or the reception in any way. Our wedding was only 45 people, and honestly I wouldn't try to squeeze 150-200 folks in there (as the website suggests this is the max occupancy), but it was more than enough space for our small group. Unfortunately Sanctuary is not wheelchair accessible, but three older family members with mobility issues didn't have any trouble getting around. Not only was Sanctuary the perfect location for us and convenient for guests, but it was super reasonably priced compared to other venues in the area! All proceeds from the venue cost go to the Amala Foundation, which hosts youth programs, volunteering projects and scholarships for disadvantaged children, and it was gratifying to know that we were putting our money towards something meaningful, as frivolous as wedding expenses can sometimes feel. I definitely recommend shelling out the extra cash to rent the upstairs loft for the bridal suite- it was the perfect place to relax and get away from the insanity of everything on the wedding day, and coming down the stairs post-ceremony makes for a really sweet "grand entrance." Although we didn't end up going there for our after-party, the Gibson Street Pub and the Highball cocktail bar are both within 1-2 minutes walking distance (not to mention Luke's Inside-Out for late-night munchies...). Special thanks to Jessica Ryan of 3 of Cups Collective, who works intimately with the Sanctuary and the Amala Foundation, was an outstanding wedding planner. The moment we told her about our theme-- worried that she might roll her eyes or put on a fake smile and say "oh, greeaat..."-- she grinned from ear to ear and said "HELL YES!" We knew right then that she was the wedding planner for us! Not only did Jessica work with us on our budget- which was stupidly low due to our total inability to visualize how expensive weddings are!- but she hooked us up with the greatest vendors ever! Sanctuary has a close relationship with a long list of incredible caterers, bartending services, etc, so interested couples have no shortage of options. She was 100% organized and on top of every possible issue, making sure the wedding ran smooth as butter, and never missed an opportunity to remind the Bride and Groom to just relax and let her handle it already! By the end, Jessica was just as much a part of the family as all our guests, with the added bonus of having kept us from going insane from stress. In short, the Sanctuary is a magical, beautiful place and it was an honor to get married there. Thanks to Jessica, Maureen and the Amala Foundation for making the most perfect wedding we could ever ask for come true.

We had a beautiful wedding here! Our inspiration was backyard wedding if we had a big, beautiful,…read morecozy back yard, and that's exactly what it felt like. The oak trees were stunning and there were so many cute little spots to take photos, and in such a great location. They were very easy to work with and flexible, and we were able to come visit and walk through any time we wanted before the wedding. 2 things to keep in mind: 1. There is no indoor space that is big enough for chairs and tables (unless you have a very small wedding - I think maybe it was under 50?) so you do have to have a rain plan. They only work with 1 tent vendor, Monarch Event Rentals, so you can't shop around on prices. We actually had rain and had a pretty good experience with Monarch, but it was an extra $3k - consider that possibility in your budgeting. 2. Our wedding was about 100 people, and that felt really like the most tables you could possibly cram in that space. They say they can hold up to 150, but to achieve that you'd probably have to put people uncomfortably close together or put tables in weird places. I know they say something like it's best suited for under 100 but can go up to 150, but I would consider your absolute max like 110 at this venue.

The venue itself has a lively, open feel with an urban backyard vibe and plenty of space to move around, mingle, and actually take in the installation without feeling crowded. What stood out most was how well the space complemented the event. The layout made it easy to engage with the installation while still enjoying the social vibe. They had space for working virtually as well as displays to test some of the technology. There's a nice balance between indoor comfort and that signature rooftop-style setting, which gives it a relaxed but elevated feel. The staff was friendly and kept things running smoothly, and the overall setup felt thoughtfully organized. Whether you were there to focus on the installation or just take it in casually, the environment supported both. The line was somewhat long to get into the event as it was at capacity and could only allow more people as people were leaving the event. I was given a drink ticket and got to try the Patio Pounder with ilegal mezcal, primo aperitivo, tropical citrus, coconut, grapefruit soda. The bartender was efficient even though the lines were long. The cocktail was enjoyable with the balance of smoky and citrus flavors. They also had a variety of food bites available including chips and queso. creamy street corn, and sliders. The food was gone relatively quickly due to the crowds but it would be replenished periodically. Overall, Upstairs at Caroline proved to be a solid venue for a creative SXSW event versatile, welcoming, and very on-brand for Austin's arts and tech scene.
