One of my main call cards for Norwood is to get my shopping done at yet another amazing Foodland…read more Now, this particular Foodland is one of the biggest of the Romeo Group. Set in the heart of Norwood shopping district and with a huge fan base, this groceries store has everything to offer. You are greeted at the entry by the large Deli section, fully stocked with the most amazing cheeses, meats, salads, roast chickens and seafood. All the produce is fresh and ready to be packaged up for you to take home. The staffs in the deli section are always busy! You will need to reach for a number as I almost guarantee you will need to wait your turn. They are happy for you to try different sliced meats and olives, so do not hesitate to ask to assist with your decision. As for the fruit and veg, it is generally well priced and fresh. You will find a good organic produce section here with a larger than normal. The fruit and veg are always arranged quite neatly and during the busy periods you will find staff constantly re-stocking. Like most Romeo Foodlands, you will find a very diverse range of products from around the world and a lot of locally sourced goods. They are very South Australian proud and I have found the most amazing local products here. One thing to mention about this store is the amazing bakery section. The bread, rolls, pastries and cakes are all of very high quality and are baked daily. You will find all different types of sourdoughs, rye, baguettes, pizzas, loafs, etc... I absolutely love the rye rolls here! Goes down well with cream cheese from the deli, avocado and Hahndorf Harris Smoked Salmon from the fridge section. Thanks Romeos for supporting South Australia!

There are aisles of wholemeal organic pasta, flours, nuts, and organic coffee and teas etc. On the other side of the shop is a large range of health and beauty products, including organic and free-of-everything hair-care, moisturisers, make-up and more. At the front of the shop is a small cafe connected to the register. What initially caught me was the sign for $6 organic coffee and vegan muffin. I'm not vegan, but I try to eat it when I'm able, so I bee-lined for the counter. I got myself a latte and a berry muffin, and some free reading material. For an organic coffee, I was impressed. Having just read about the sins of sugar, I had my coffee without my usual one teaspoon, which could have been a mistake since I often need to sugar to take the edge of the bitterness. This however was fine without, and not bitter at all, though maintaining its flavour. It wasn't quite like normal coffee, but I couldn't pin-point why that was. Still, I was happy with it. Vegan sweets are mostly really moist, and this was no exception. I couldn't tell it was vegan apart from its density, and I love a dense muffin, so no complaints here.

Organic can be pricey as I'm sure you're well aware (I sure as hell am being a uni student) but they do some ok deals on select items. We always browse their discounted items section and scab a few bargains. We shop around quite a bit for organic items and I must say they do alright on price, range and quality. If more big retailers can push organic hopefully it will become more affordable, without compromising the ethics ("free-range" eggs are an example of how standards can be watered down for corporate greed). In the meantime Romeo's Organic Wholefoods is on my list of places to source stuff from. Highly recommend for those that are like-minded!

It is a large fruit and veg store that offers a wide variety of produce and other gourmet items such as local jams, dried fruit and gourmet dips in the refrigerator section. The produce is of the highest quality and the service is top notch too. You'll never wait long to be served - as soon as you join the queue a bell is rung and a staff member pops up and opens another register. It's the little things like this that make this a standout store. Unfortunately, I've heard the centre's Woolworths checks Metro's prices each morning and undercuts them. It concerns me that great locally owned stores like this one may soon go out of business due to this practice. Let's hope people choose quality and service rather than just price.

Not for Mother's day but because I often buy her flowers, and often fro metropolitan. I bought delphiniums which looked lovely and she was pleased. By Sunday morning, the majority of the leaves had wilted and half of the petals had fallen off! Because it was Mother's Day and we had family and friends visiting I did not have time to go back with them. By Monday morning they had to be binned. I returned on Wednesday, the first opportunity I had to report this. I spoke with the unnamed "manager" who advised they were aware that growers had been cutting flowers in some cases a couple of weeks early in order to get enough into store. I pointed out that I did not pay for 2 week old flowers and there was no sign saying they were reduced in any. Effectively he admitted they were selling produce not of merchantable quality. I was just met with a shrug and told if I had the flowers and a receipt he might be able to do something. Who keeps a receipt for a $20 bunch of flowers, and who keeps a dead bunch for days? The so called manager obviously had no idea of consumer laws, or even customer service. It wouldn't have been so bad as I wasn't looking for a refund, just to let them know. An apology would have been plenty.

Open till midnight, this is often a lifesaver for me - 15 years after leaving the Gold Coast I still have the odd lapse of concentration and forget I live in Adelaide, home of the 5pm closure, rather than a 24 hour fantasmogoria of shopping opportunities. You can get everything here from cat food to breakfast cereal, and the store is open till midnight. OMG, midnight, whatever is Adelaide coming to??? Until Campbelltown gets a 24 hour shop of some kind, the IGA is it. It provides absolute gold by being open way past the time every other supermarket has curled up with it's pillow and a nice fluffy doona. Kudo's IGA, I love you!!!

Wide eyed, unable to breath properly from heart palpitations because "can't talk...too excited..." This place has gathered everything I love about Adelaide and plonked it into the trendiest warehouse shed thing at the back of IGA on Gilbert St. It's even run by the same SA family! Every Sunday from 9am-2pm this shed will open its doors to stallholders who want to sell their wares. From bakers to vegan cafes, coffee shops, seedling stalls and more this little collective of organic, vegan, raw and healthy food is all a bit too much for me. Want to try some kombucha? Hells yeah! How about a freshly steamed mussel from the coast of SA? Ok! It's like a farmers market but smaller, less crowded (not for long I'm sure) and is 5 minutes from my home so wins 5 stars in my books. So why only 4 stars then? I do think there needs to be more fresh fruit and veg options and a bit more diversity in stalls for people like me who want to do their week's shop here (ie. 3 bakeries in the one small location is a bit much). I am officially signed up as a Market Member already and for $20 per annum you get invited to private events at The Shed, receive discounts at stalls and a cool chopping board for progressive tasting plate specials from stalls each weekend. So if you have nothing to do next Sunday and want to see a spectacle, come on down to the Market Shed to see your resident pug faced, over excited local shopping, slurping coffee and getting her organic on.

Despite it's small(er) size (of comparative markets such as the Adelaide Farmers Showgrounds Market) of 20-30 stalls, the array of stalls and the promises of more to come (think weekend evening members activities) have got my vote. This cafe has heaps of comfy seating and a good range of foccacia's to nosh on at lunchtime. Now, the biscuits: I had coconut macarons, lime shortbread, and coffee florentines, and they were too delicious to believe, try them for yourself. As soon as you place a coffee order they bring you a water glass on a whimsical silver platter, as if to say 'cleanse your palate lady, you're in for a ride.' The atmosphere is somewhat helped by the charismatic pastry chef, but at the end of the day, it's all about the cakes. And they're damn good cakes.

Like true German food, the pasty here is quite dense and heavy, but everything is sweet and tasty. Oh, and did I mention cheap? One you won't find elsewhere is their "Nut Corner", a delicious slab of chocolate coated crunchy nut slice, of crushed nuts held together with glucose and honey. YUM. Hello my week's worth of fat. But for $2.50, who could resist? Someone else maybe, but not me. They also have a deal for a cappuccino and a muffin for $4.00. The coffee when I had it was a little over-heated, but apart from that it was okay. The muffins are small compared to the rest of the sweets, but were moist and tasty. They also do a standard range of pies and sausage rolls to satisfy the lunch seeker, and soft drinks and carton iced-coffees.
