Poultry Cuisine pretty much does massive chunks of chickens…read more They are grain fed, and huge. It is a great place to pick up a chicken for a roast if you are entertaining guests or have a large family to feed. Prices are pretty good, about $5 a kilo for whole chickens, $4 a kilo for drumsticks and $3 a kilo for wings. If I am making fried chicken or something else requiring chicken parts i'll usually just grab a couple of drumsticks and wings to use. It works out a bit cheaper than using a whole chicken (which is a bit too much meat anyway) and I prefer meat which is on the bone. There is a lot of meat on the drum sticks, and even the wings, when compared the the scanty little things you get from the supermarket. There are, of course, also breasts and thighs available as well for those who prefer that cut. I'll usually get thighs if I am making a curry or the like. As well as whole and cuts of chicken, there are also more prepared meats such as schnitzels and sausages. The quality is there also and the prices remain quite reasonable.

Great poultry, but last time I was there I saw a sign saying 'halal' meat…read more I shopped elsewhere. Halal killing means the severing in one stroke, while the animal is alive, the carotid artery, the jugular vein and the windpipe, by a Muslim, who then allows the animal to bleed out. The issue with chooks is that it is hard to pre-stun them. Animals which have a cardiac arrest before the throat slitting cannot be 'halal'. A bolt to the brain from a humane pistol for larger animals, or severing the head of a chicken, are both kind deaths compared to the painful deaths many animals suffer under halal. I'll shop here again when I can be confident that the produce is killed humanely.

Newest kid on the Asian greens block in the Adelaide Central market replacing the former Asian…read moregrocer, now Mariana Market in Grote St. Pretty much the standard line in fresh Asian veggies minus the Asian supermarket lines. Always fresh this simple range is very competitively priced. Specialist Asian Greengrocer is slowly expanding their variety as the owners find their feet and are getting a feel for their clientele's tastes and desires. Much more convenient (if you're in the market than crossing the road) and much more reliably fresh ensured by a high and quick turnover. I now make this little convenient grocer my go-to for ginger, coriander, chillies, kaffir lime leaves, bok choy and the like.

However, 6 months on the new kids on the block are making the most of this space to sell cheap, fresh, locally farmed produce for both the Aussie Skip and ignorant Asian cooks like myself. Bags of cucumbers, capsicum, tomatoes and more for just two dolla. Any kind of herb for a dolla a huge bunch and a small variety of things like bok choy, purple potatoes and other Asian greens also cheap. Service is always quick, friendly enough and I can normally fill a bag of beautiful fresh produce here for $20 that will last at least a week or so in the fridge.

Finding Korean and Japanese imported produce can be difficult. Yes most Asian Supermarkets stock a…read morebit of this and a bit of that, but we want quality, we want selection! Fortunately, there are a couple of specialty stores around Adelaide that do come to the party. Koreana in the Central Market Plaza stocks a wide selection of imported bright and pretty things from those wonderful countries that bring us Manga and Kim Chi. For my last visit I purchased some highly unusual, and overly sweet beverages (no idea what flavour they were, or meant to be) plus some spanktastic chocolate milkshake syrup (noice!). Although they don't have everything you could possibly desire, they do pack a huge amount into a small space, so make sure to take some time when you browse. Just back tracking for a moment, for those who have not joined the ranks us who worship Kim Chi I shall enlighten you ever so slightly. Kim Chi is basically Pickled Cabbage with some mad chilli spices in the mix. Be sure though to be careful which brand you buy, because some I have tried are a bit ordinary. Personally I like the most common one that you can find in a clear little tub with a clear lid (can't remember the name), you'll know the one when you see it.

Who likes Korean? MEEEEEE!!! KIMMM CHHII!! I love Korean so much. What do I love about it so much?…read moreWell, fermented cabbage and chilli my friend. Actually, there is a lot of Japanese stuff in this supermarket as well. But, if you are in need for a wide selection of Kim Chi or Gochujang, you have come to the right place. I am talking bipimbap central people. You will find everything you need here to create a masterpiece bipimbap or Korean bbq. There are also a whole bunch of noodles, dumplings, sauces, frozen veg and even soju. So much awesome! The store is located in a side alley of Chinatown. So, if you know Chinatown well, it is just off the middle courtyard and down the first alley to the right. I hope that makes sense. Because you should go out of your way to find this one. The only thing they do not stock here is fresh veggies. But, that is not a problem. You can get that in so many other places. Go forth and enjoy!
