My mom and her neighbor hired Tom's Mulch to do some landscaping in the front areas of their duplex. An employee came out very quickly to see the property and come up with some sketches to show them. They were very excited about the ideas he had and were pleasantly surprised when the price was below what they had been anticipating. They came out a few days ago to complete the work and they did a fantastic job! The front of their house looks so much better than it did before and they are both so incredibly happy. Personally I have shopped at Tom's for natural looking border rocks and have been very satisfied with the quality and price of what I purchased. If I ever need any landscaping work done I wouldn't hesitate to call Tom's. read more

Unfortunately, I just ordered a cord of firewood from Tom's and it is too green to burn. They did not mention this when I called to order. Another company I called was nice enough to tell me theirs was not seasoned yet. So, this will do me no good this winter and I will now have to find more elsewhere. I've ordered firewood from Tom's multiple times in the past and it was seasoned. I will say the person I spoke to was friendly and the delivery and service was same day. That part was great. I'm just stuck with a cord of wood I can't use until next season. read more

My husband and I have lived in this house for 30 years. Our half acre piece of land has multiple layers of landscaping maintenance every year. We have used several local landscape merchants over the years for spring cleanup. None can compare to Tom's Mulch! The price is competitive and the owner explains all of the charges up-front. The quality of the mulch is superb...fine and black. The crew are professional and punctual, tenderly moving early spring flowers and clipping bushes with care. If I could give you zero stars, i would. Every day i watch your trucks race through Bellbrook. It is a 25 mph residential and light commercial area and you guys act like it's a highway. My kids play here. And you've got reckless dump truck drivers racing 20 tons of stone through here at 55. Had a really negative experience over damage caused to our garage door when mulch was delivered. Negotiated with owner and was promised $400 for the damage but they never paid and would not return any calls. Perhaps the least professional handling of a customer complaint in my experience. read more

Their processed topsoil looks like it's mostly clay with some mulch, manure, and gravel (?) added to the mix. I hope my grass can grow in this stuff. On the plus side, delivery was prompt. read more

I had my wife pick up a yard of the Topsoil Plus for some grass seeding I was doing on the weekend. What was provided what not what was advertised on the website. The website has this listed as "Rich processed soil enhanced with 20% Humus." What I got was 70% mulch/wood, small stones, and a small amount of actual topsoil that looked nothing like is pictured on their website. Very disapointed. read more

We ordered two cubic yards of topsoil with humus. Looks just like free biodegradable shredded mulch from the Greene County Recycle Center. Full of sticks and precious little topsoil. Save your money and go elsewhere! Very, very disappointed. read more

This is one of those instances where reviews totally kicked my A**. Not easy to communicate with. No same day delivery as per website. Topsoil was dirty fill, full of rocks. I am disabled, so I spent endless hours attempting to screen out the debris. Very frustrating. Earlier this year, made a large purchase of leaf compost from Tom's Mulch to start up my garden. Although the load was delivered immediately the following day, the compost was of inferior quality. There were still recognizable leaf fragments; the compost was contaminated with garbage; it smelt foul like expired vinegar; and the compost was still not done decomposing, so it was still radiating heat and steam was rising from the giant pile that was delivered. There were so many large bits of wood and debris left in the giant pile that I wasted several months trying to sift the coarse compost (if you could call it compost). Eventually, I gave up and dumped the rest of the compost without sifting it and that was an even bigger mistake. Because there were so many undecomposed wood pieced and leaf fragments left in the compost, it left my soil in an even worse condition than it already was. The undecomposed organic matter locked nitrogen into the soil and left very little nitrogen available for my green vegetables to use. I had some of my worst pole bean yields that I've ever seen after using this compost. When it comes to compost, it really does hold true that you get what you pay for. I really should've spent the extra shipping cost and gotten thoroughly composted material from Fresh Aire Farms in Union City Ohio. read more

Ordered the double processed dark supreme - it's far chunkier than it looks on the website. The mulch was supposed to be dumped in the driveway but a significant amount of it ended up in the grass. The mulch is not supposed to be dyed but the paw prints across my patio make me question that. When I called to see if they had options to pick up the leftovers (received more than I ordered) they were defensive even though I in no way was inconsiderate of them - I did receive an apology for the unwarranted attitude but still... Tom's Mulch is more expensive than their competitors - I expected better of them. read more

I was pretty disappointed at the four wheelbarrow loads of trash that came along with one cord of wood @ $175. Also, I'm pretty sure this wood was not seasoned as it is very heavy and it's not burn well. Grr. read more

Well, they look good on the outside but they sure do struggle with follow through. I spent almost 10k getting work done while I was deployed. It was a struggle to get them started at all and then upon my return 1/3 of the plants were dead and the tree was dead they planted. So I reached out to them for replacements and got run around after run around. I sent many emails but I guess their email system is broken as it appears none of my emails went through ( or that's what they said, I have the sent emails). After pulling teeth they came out to replace the dead plants and the dead tree and I would have to say I could have done a much better job my self. So now here I stand with crap products planted in my yard and have hired another company to come fix Toms mistakes. I would not recommend giving a dime to this company as they will be qucik to take your money up front, but they sure show no care after the fact. If they put their name on their work then it's clear by the work done in my yard they need to reconsider their efforts. I would not use toms mulch to cut my grass yet alone plant items for me ever again. Save your money, or better yet go to another landscaping company that will care about your yard after they cash that check. read more

Called for an estimate for mulch blowing three weeks ago. Got an appointment. Received a phone call 30 minutes after the appointment time to say he wasn't able to make it and that he would call me later that day to reschedule. He never called. I waited for Monday of following week and called. He came out the next day, measured, and said I would receive an email with estimate that night. Never got the estimate. Waited a week and called. Told I would receive the estimate that evening. Never received the estimate. I guess they don't want my business. We have been very pleased with Tom's Black Gold mulch over the years. It looks good on the border and morphs into good quality soil over time. The prices are reasonable, delivery prompt, polite, in what appear to be new (or recent) trucks. The drivers take care not to drive over your lawn by mistake. I would steer clear of this rip off company at all costs. I ordered and paid in advance for 3 yards of top soil and was delivered filler dirt full of rocks big and small. I called and spoke to both the MGR and then the owner who offered zero resolution. Had reason to use the services of Tom's mulch as my in-ground pool required filling in due to a harsh winter resulting in cracked walls. Eric led the removal/destruction and Dave was the heavy equipment operator. The pool is gone and it is impossible to tell one was ever there. Also, if the space settles they will return with more top soil for 5 years. Losing the pool was stressing. The cost to replace was ridiculous. This result eases some of the pain. I had been buying my mulch from Phillips sand and gravel for years and a yard of mulch is two scoops from a bobcat and it filled my silverado truck bed. I went to Tom's this year and bought a yard and only got one scoop which they claim is a yard and it only filled my truck half way. I told them I got two scoops at Phillips and they said they use a larger bobcat than Phillips. Well one scoop or two I only got half the amount and they did not seem to care. Completely unreliable. Had set up an appointment with them for an estimate on a replacement retaining wall and had asked if I needed to be there during the estimate and was told no, so did not take time off work. They don't show up to do the estimate and then say it's because I needed to be there during the estimate! What's worse is that I was on a tight time frame to get the estimate done during a home buying contract (time within which I could ask the sellers to do the needed repair or at least pay for it)-- and was assured it would be done in time-- and they tell me, after failing to do the estimate when promised, that they are now too busy to do an estimate within the time frame I need. Seriously?! And they left me without enough time to get an estimate done by someone else!. [Harsh expletive] Avoid these people. If this is how they are on an estimate, what a nightmare they must be on an actual job. I will now have to foot the entire bill of having the retaining wall replaced (thanks Tom's Mulch) and, trust me, not by these people. read more

Ordered 3.5 Yards of their "garden super soil". What I got was maybe 2 yards of what could be garden soil mixed with a good 1.5 yards of chunks of clay the size of my fist. I tried to deal with it and use it, did not work well. So I then I even tried to sift out the large chunks and use it. There was still so much clay that the surface of my raised beds form a hard crust over the surface that seedlings cannot penetrate. Transplanted items seem to be surviving, but only just. They have not grown at all since transplanting. I finally resorted to trying to talk to them about it, but the only person that can resolve it is the owner, Judd Powell. Every time I try to get him on the phone, he conveniently has just left the building. I have left voicemails, staff has supposedly left messages on his desk, and yet no return calls at all. I gave this business every opportunity to make things right, but with no help whatsoever. I have resorted to filing a dispute with my credit card company to get a refund for my purchase. Unfortunately for me, I feel that I have lost more than just the purchase of this dirt. I have lost a lot of time and effort, I will most likely lose a lot of my crops that I have already planted and now I will have to attempt to either remove all of this junk dirt from my beds or try to fix the dirt, either of which is going to result in more lost time and effort. My recommendation is to stay as far away from this business as you can. read more

Bought a new house in March 2017 and noticed there were some drainage issues in our backyard. Hired Tom's Mulch after a reasonable estimate was given for the work and placed a deposit. I was told the work would only take 2 days to complete. Work was not finished until July 2017 for having an in ground drainage system placed, mulch bed around our deck, fill dirt and grass seed applied to areas affected and digging up some dirt behind our garage where it was covering some siding. Weather was an issue sometimes due to the rain, but I contacted the company on a weekly basis for updates when the work would be completed. The staff was always friendly but the work took too long in my opinion. Would not recommend this company for time sensitive projects. Especially in my situation being a mom with a 1 year old and having dogs that needed a backyard to simply use the bathroom, it was a very frustrating 5 months for me.
