We contacted Tom's Mechanical for our summer A/C check-up. They found we were a little low on refrigerant and topped the system off. They said they would check it in a few weeks to see if it was leaking. When they came back, they said we had lost about 4 ounces of refrigerant and showed me where they found the leaks. They gave me a quote to replace the A/C. I checked with a few other contractors and they were more costly than Tom's quote. We have used them for many years and i am very confident with the quality ofwork they do. We made an appointment to have the system replaced. They came out on time, did the work efficiently and cleaned up when they were done. Please read before doing business with this local "family business" in our town. This morning, while leaving Grayslake, I was cut off in traffic after making a left-hand turn onto rte 120 from hwy 45. As I was getting up to full speed + at least 10pmh over the speed limit on this stretch of road, I was passed by a van doing at least 70 in a 35-40, then the van slammed on the brakes so that I would have to as well and all of my belongings flew into the front seat; I admit, I wasn't on my best behavior either as I sped up when I noticed what he was obviously & illegally trying to do. This act was followed by continued bullying as we both drove west on 120, with the right lane being closed a short distance ahead due to road construction. The van (picture attached) then drove about 45, riding shotgun next to a construction vehicle, knowing that this vehicle would have to move to the right; he was hoping I would be cut off a second time. When I called the number on the van to report the driver, he laughed at me and called me a "F**king C**t" (when I came into full view of him as he merged onto 94E he was on older gentleman with gray hair & a moustache so I can only assume he was Tom Sr.). I would NOT want this person in my home--NOT ever. He doesn't respect or have regard for others, esp. women or Veterans (I am both--my car is clearly marked with both). We use Advantage Heating & Cooling for all our service needs, and they have always been extremely professional. Another company identified the need for a new heat exchanger, but quoted an outrageous price for labor and could not give us a definitive time to do the work other than it may take 30 days. So far so good! Tom & his crew just finished up installation of a new Goodman AC and Furnace plus a media filter and took the old equipment away. He even helped our old AC limp along a few more days with a coolant top-off until we could get the new stuff installed, nobody else who gave me a quote offered to do that. I found them to be professional and straightforward to work with. Tom kept me in the loop about what was happening and when, and they were great about answering questions because I'm nosy and curious about HVAC stuff. Their work looks clean and orderly, they cleaned up the workspace thoroughly after they were done. Tom, his son, and their trainee were here several times throughout the process and they were very friendly and considerate of our property and everyone in it, including small children and large dogs. They hit a couple snags with the AC not working like it should at first and Tom was very responsive about checking back on it to be sure everything was good after they got it working properly. He gave me a price break for the inconvenience of not having AC for the first night like they planned, and apologized that it wasn't ideal the first time, which was important to me. I don't expect everything to go perfectly on a job with as many details as removing a 24 year old HVAC system and installing a new one. I just expect that if there are issues, you're committed to making it right. I felt that they did that. As long as everything holds up and keeps operating like it should, I'm very happy! Replacement of a 35 year old behemoth furnace: Tom and Son handled this project from start to finish with thoroughness and expertise. Not to mention this monster was located in a crawl space! I got the usual three estimates, Tom's price was basically in the middle. That being said, the value of the service was exceptional. I had Tom's come out to get me a quote on a humidifier and a new furnace. Tom was on time and very personable, he ran through the system with me and what he could provide for my home, he even warned me up front about a potential cost that could come up since my furnace was on the small size cabinet wise and his estimate was very reasonable even with the additional cost. The furnace replacement went smoothly and the system is working wonderfully! I am very happy with his work and I'll be having him do my annual inspections for my AC and furnace from now on. I find it hard to trust service people when I know nothing about the work that they do. I never know if I'm getting a fair price and if the work they do is done right so when you find someone that I feel confident that they are doing what is best for me and is responsive to my needs you keep going back to them. I first used Tom on a July 4 probably 10 years ago. It was a really hot day and the AC went out. I called to just ask questions because of the holiday I thought it would be an arm and a leg to get fixed and wanted to see if I could schedule something. He came over in 45 min spent over 3 hours fixing it told me that within 3 years probably need a new unit but right now I could get away with his fix which was under $300. 4 years later we got a whole new AC and Furnace from him. I did get quotes from other local places. Toim was by far less money and was able to schedule quicker than the competitors. We just had them here for AC tune-up and had a bad part that was under warranty. No extra costs involved explained everything. If you want a very fair deal and someone you feel confident in I highly recommend Tom. If you look at my past reviews I really don't recommend to many places but Tom has earned my trust. read more
